Chapter 5 - THE BROTHER WHO ALWAYS NEEDED SAVING

Daniel arrived outside Claire’s hospital room at 4:12 a.m.
He had changed clothes.
Earlier, he wore a navy suit. Now he wore a black sweater and dark jeans. There was dirt on one knee and a fresh cut along his jaw.
Claire noticed both.
He stood behind the glass, asking Elena to let him in.
Claire almost refused.
Then she remembered Leah’s warning.
Daniel was involved, but he was not in control.
“Search him first,” Claire said.
Hospital security checked Daniel’s pockets.
They found his phone, wallet, car keys, and a small digital recorder.
Daniel claimed the recorder belonged to Claire.
“It was in her coat,” he said.
Claire did not recognize it.
Julia placed the recorder in an evidence bag.
Only then did Claire allow Daniel into the room.
He stopped near the door.
For the first time in Claire’s memory, her younger brother looked older than she did.
His face was gray with exhaustion.
“What happened to your jaw?” Claire asked.
“I fell.”
The lie was so obvious that neither of them reacted to it.
Claire held up her cracked phone.
“You sent me a message about Leah.”
Daniel glanced at Julia.
“I need to speak to you alone.”
“No.”
“Claire, you don’t understand.”
“That sentence has protected you your entire life.”
Daniel flinched.
She continued.
“You borrowed money. I didn’t understand. You missed payments. I didn’t understand. You forged my approval on company guarantees. I didn’t understand. Now I’m in a trauma unit with a shattered pelvis, and you still think confusion is my biggest problem.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“I didn’t push you.”
“Did Mark?”
He looked at the floor.
“Answer me.”
“It happened fast.”
“Did Mark push me?”
“He grabbed you.”
“Then what?”
“You pulled away.”
“Then what?”
“You slipped.”
Claire watched him.
The audio recording played in her mind.
Check if she’s conscious.
We have to move her before the paramedics see the study.
“Why did you move me?” she asked.
Daniel’s eyes widened.
Mark had not told him about the recording.
Claire saw the realization pass over his face.
“How much do you remember?”
“Enough.”
Daniel walked closer.
Julia stepped between him and the bed.
He stopped.
“Claire, I wanted to call an ambulance immediately.”
“But you didn’t.”
“Mom said the police would find the records beneath the stairs.”
“What records?”
“I never saw all of them.”
“Why?”
“Robert controls access.”
“Robert is in Switzerland.”
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“No, he isn’t.”
“Where is he?”
“I don’t know.”
“Then how does he control access?”
“Through Mark. Through Evelyn. Through people like Holloway.”
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
“Holloway drove the second car.”
Claire’s stomach tightened.
“What second car?”
“The car they used to move you to Easton.”
“So Leah was telling the truth.”
Daniel looked at Claire sharply.
“You spoke to her?”
“She said you were scared.”
“She should be dead.”
The words escaped him before he could stop them.
Claire felt the room go cold.
“What did you say?”
“I mean Robert thinks she’s dead.”
“Why?”
Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
“Six months ago, Leah came to me with copies of financial records. She thought I would help her expose Mark.”
“Why would she trust you?”
“Because I told her I wanted to repay you.”
“Did you?”
“At first.”
Claire said nothing.
Daniel’s eyes filled with shame.
“She showed me transfers from Northstar. Millions had gone through companies connected to Parker Development. I knew some accounts were unusual, but I didn’t know where the money came from.”
“You never asked?”
“I didn’t want to know.”
“Because it paid your debts.”
“Yes.”
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
“What did you do after Leah showed you the records?”
“I called Mom.”
Claire looked through the glass at Helen.
Her mother stood with Evelyn, both women watching the room.
“Mom called Robert,” Daniel continued. “Robert sent someone to Leah’s apartment. She disappeared before they arrived.”
“And you let me think she abandoned me.”
“I was trying to keep you out of it.”
“You were keeping yourself out of prison.”
Daniel did not deny it.
“What happened tonight?” Claire asked.
He swallowed.
“You found the Northstar transfer on Mark’s laptop.”
“I remember confronting him.”
“You said you were calling Julia.”
Claire looked at Julia.
“So they knew about you.”
Julia’s face remained still, but her eyes sharpened.
Daniel continued.
“Mark panicked. He tried to take your phone. You ran toward the stairs. He grabbed your arm. You hit him with the phone.”
A faint memory surfaced.
Mark’s lip bleeding.
His hand tightening around her wrist.
“You told him you had uploaded everything,” Daniel said. “He demanded the password. You refused. He pulled you backward.”
“And I fell.”
“Yes.”
“Did he push me?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then he whispered, “Not the first time.”
Claire stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
“You caught the railing.”
A flash returned.
Her fingers gripping polished wood.
Her body hanging over the staircase.
Mark standing above her.
Daniel shouting.
Claire remembered Mark bending down.
She remembered hope.
She believed he was reaching to save her.
Daniel’s voice cracked.
“Mark stepped on your hand.”
The memory returned fully.
Pressure crushing her fingers.
Mark looking directly into her eyes.
Then letting her fall.
Claire’s monitor accelerated.
Elena checked her blood pressure.
Julia placed a hand near Claire’s shoulder without touching her.
Daniel began crying.
“I should have stopped him.”
“Yes,” Claire said.
“I’m sorry.”
“That doesn’t help me.”
“I can testify.”
“Against Mark?”
“Against all of them.”
Claire looked at Helen.
“Even Mom?”
Daniel followed her gaze.
His face collapsed.
Claire understood.
Her brother still wanted a bargain.
He would sacrifice Mark.
He would sacrifice Evelyn.
He might even sacrifice Robert.
But he wanted their mother protected.
“What did Helen do?” Claire asked.
Daniel shook his head.
“Don’t.”
“What did she do?”
“She found your fingers moving after the fall.”
Claire waited.
Daniel’s voice became barely audible.
“She injected you.”
Elena turned sharply.
“With what?”
“I don’t know. She had a syringe.”
Claire remembered a sharp sting in her neck.
Then darkness.
Elena immediately examined the bruising beneath Claire’s hairline.
“There’s a puncture mark,” she said.
Julia photographed it.
“What did your mother say after the injection?” Claire asked.
Daniel looked at her.
“She said, ‘Now she won’t fight us in the car.’”
Claire stared through the glass.
Helen noticed.
May you like
For the first time that night, Claire’s mother smiled at her.
Then Helen raised one finger to her lips.
