THE WOMAN ON THE BALCONY / Chapter 10 / 15

Chapter 10 - What Ethan Remembered)

Laura wanted to shoot Ethan the moment he entered. Claire stopped her with one sentence.

"If he dies now, he controls the story forever."

They arranged the room like a stage. Samuel hid behind the archive shelves. Laura stood in shadow. Claire's bed faced the steel door. A small camera streamed to Mason, who was racing back from the far end of the property with his team.

Ethan entered with Margaret.

His gun trembled. Margaret's poisoned body leaned against him, but her expression remained contemptuous.

"Look at you," she told her son. "Still making women carry your fear."

Ethan shoved her into a chair. His gaze found Claire.

"I knew you'd understand."

"You married me to find my mother's evidence."

"At first. Then I loved you."

"You loosened her wheel."

"Samuel told you that? Samuel thinks I did everything."

Samuel stepped from hiding. "You confessed to me."

For the first time, the brothers faced each other in full light. Ethan appeared polished, successful, intact. Samuel looked like the truth Ethan had spent his life burying.

"You were a child," Ethan said. "You don't remember the dock."

"I remember you holding my head underwater."

Margaret closed her eyes.

Ethan laughed once, without humor. "Mother held your head underwater. I pulled you out. Father made me swear I had done it because he needed leverage over me."

"Liar."

"Ask her."

Margaret said nothing.

Claire pressed. "Tell them."

Margaret looked at Samuel. "You saw Richard with another woman. You threatened to tell me. He panicked and pushed you from the dock. When you survived, he convinced me your brain injury made you dangerous. I let him hide you because scandal would have taken the company and both my sons."

Samuel stared at her. "You visited the room."

"Yes."

"You told me I had no name."

"Yes."

The admission wounded more deeply than denial.

Ethan raised the gun toward Samuel. "Where is the card?"

"We don't have it," Claire said.

"Helen hid it. Laura searched for it. Samuel searched for it. My father tore apart your childhood home. And somehow you still have it."

Claire thought of the puzzle box. The indentation beneath the lining had been empty, but Helen never trusted obvious hiding places. She remembered the lullaby her mother sang while turning the box's wooden pieces: Moon above, truth below, little bird knows where to go.

The box had contained a carved bird in its lid.

Ethan had taken the lining apart but not the lid.

Claire kept her face blank. "It's gone."

He saw the realization anyway. He had always been skilled at reading the smallest change in her.

"The bird," he whispered.

He fired at the overhead light. Darkness struck. Laura fired back. Margaret screamed. Samuel tackled Ethan, and the gun skidded beneath Claire's bed.

The brothers fought toward the open trapdoor above the water channel. Ethan struck Samuel with a metal bar. Laura tried to intervene, but Margaret caught her ankle and brought her down.

"He is still my son," Margaret gasped.

Claire's bed began to roll. One wheel crossed the lip of the trapdoor. Her cast tipped toward the black water.

Ethan looked at her.

For an instant he could save Claire or escape.

He chose the tunnel.

Samuel caught the bed before it fell. Laura pulled Margaret away. Sirens rose above the house as Mason's team breached the upper floor.

But Ethan had vanished into the water passage carrying the brass key.

And he knew where Claire's puzzle box was.
