THE WOMAN ON THE ASHFORD BENCH / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - The Name Beneath the Memorial

Emergency lights flickered inside the academy basement.

A man stood at the top of the stairs.

He wore a dark coat and a plain black mask. Two armed figures waited behind him.

Thomas moved in front of Eleanor.

The masked man raised one hand.

“We do not need to make this violent.”

Mara aimed her weapon.

“Come down slowly.”

The man ignored her.

“Give me Daniel’s code.”

“No,” Mara replied.

The masked man removed a phone.

A live video appeared on the screen.

Helen Ward sat inside the veterans’ shelter office. Several residents stood behind her. A figure in a black coat controlled the entrance.

Mara’s weapon lowered slightly.

The masked man spoke.

“No one has been harmed. Whether that remains true depends on your cooperation.”

Eleanor looked at Thomas.

“Does the code mean anything without the compass coordinates?”

“No.”

The masked man tilted his head.

“You have the compass.”

He knew too much.

Eleanor removed it from her pocket.

Mara whispered, “Don’t.”

“They already know where the chamber is,” Eleanor replied. “They need us to open it.”

Thomas turned toward the masked man.

“Who is the Director?”

“You have met the Director many times.”

“Victor?”

“Victor guarded a door he was too frightened to open.”

“Commander Grant?”

The masked man laughed softly.

“Grant believes he is hunting us.”

“Then who?”

“You will understand when you see the final name.”

They drove to Ashford Park in two vehicles.

The restoration lights had been turned off. The newly cleaned memorial rose in darkness.

Helen and the shelter residents remained on the live video. Eleanor had no way to know whether the footage was current, but she could not risk their lives.

Mara entered the first code behind the memorial stone.

A section of the base moved aside.

The compass coordinates identified six points carved into the floor. Thomas pressed them in order.

A circular staircase opened.

The masked man forced them downward.

The chamber beneath the memorial was smaller than the lake archive. Metal cabinets lined the walls. A central console waited beneath a sealed glass cover.

Thomas entered Daniel’s six-digit code.

The cover unlocked.

A screen activated.

CROWN CONTINUITY ARCHIVE

AUTHORIZED NAMES: 1,207

The masked man moved closer.

“Search the final entry.”

Thomas typed the command.

The list scrolled through hundreds of names.

Some belonged to dead officials.

Others belonged to soldiers Eleanor remembered from classified reports.

Several had supposedly died in accidents or disappeared during overseas operations.

The final entry was protected.

The screen requested a biometric confirmation.

ELEANOR VALE

Eleanor stared at her own name.

“That is impossible.”

Thomas looked at her.

“The archive recognizes you as an authorized founder.”

“I never created this.”

The masked man spoke from behind them.

“Not in the life you remember.”

Eleanor turned.

“What does that mean?”

“Open the file.”

A small glass panel illuminated beside the keyboard.

Eleanor placed her hand against it.

The system scanned her fingerprints.

ACCESS APPROVED.

A video file appeared.

The date was twenty-nine years earlier.

Eleanor pressed play.

A younger version of herself stood inside a military briefing room.

Thomas was beside her.

Daniel Quinn stood near the door.

The younger Eleanor looked directly into the recording camera.

“If this file has been opened, then the Crown network survived the original operation.”

Present-day Eleanor gripped the edge of the console.

She had no memory of making the recording.

Onscreen, her younger self continued.

“The public identity Eleanor Vale must never learn the full truth unless Thomas confirms the Director has returned.”

Thomas stepped back.

“I have never seen this.”

The masked man seemed satisfied.

“Continue.”

The recording shifted.

A photograph appeared on the screen.

It showed twelve people standing around a table. Each wore a broken-crown ring.

Victor Mercer was not among them.

Chief Cole was not among them.

Commander Grant was not among them.

Eleanor recognized only one face.

Her own.

In the photograph, she stood at the head of the table.

Onscreen, the younger Eleanor spoke again.

“The final entry contains the identity of the first Director.”

The chamber lights flickered.

Mara looked toward the staircase.

“We have company.”

Footsteps descended from above.

The masked man turned toward the entrance.

“That was not my team.”

Thomas pulled Eleanor away from the console.

The screen displayed a final warning.

SECOND BIOMETRIC SIGNATURE REQUIRED.

Eleanor looked at Thomas.

“Whose signature?”

Before he could answer, another hand pressed against the glass panel.

The scanner turned green.

Eleanor slowly looked beside her.

Samuel Hart stood at the console.

No one had seen him enter.

He wore his military uniform from the ceremony.

In one hand, he held the original broken-crown ring Thomas had placed on the interview-room table.

Mara raised her weapon.

“Samuel, step away.”

Samuel ignored her.

The protected file began to open.

Thomas stared at him.

“You knew.”

Samuel’s expression held eighteen years of exhaustion.

“I knew what they told me to remember.”

The masked man removed his mask.

Eleanor had never seen his face before.

But Thomas clearly had.

“You,” Thomas whispered.

The man smiled.

“Welcome back, Colonel.”

The file reached ninety percent.

Footsteps continued descending toward the chamber.

Eleanor looked at the photograph of her younger self standing at the head of the Crown Committee.

“Samuel,” she said, “who was I?”

Samuel turned toward her.

His eyes filled with something that looked like guilt.

“You were the reason Thomas entered the warehouse.”

The file reached ninety-eight percent.

Thomas stepped between Eleanor and the screen.

“Close it.”

Samuel shook his head.

“It is too late.”

The chamber door opened.

Commander Elias Grant entered with a team of armed federal agents.

He aimed his weapon at Samuel.

“Do not let that file finish loading.”

Ninety-nine percent.

Eleanor reached toward the console.

Thomas caught her wrist.

“Ellie, whatever appears next, it may not be the truth.”

Grant shouted again.

“Close the file.”

The unmasked stranger laughed.

Samuel whispered a name Eleanor could not hear.

May you like

The screen flashed white.

Then every light beneath Ashford Park went dark.
