Chapter 9 - The Man Beneath the Hospital

The old research basement lay three floors beneath St. Catherine’s official foundation.
Ethan’s credentials opened the first service door. Vale’s access opened the second. The third required a code found in Julian’s journal.
Mara led them down a concrete corridor lit by emergency lamps.
Claire heard machinery ahead.
The air grew colder.
Behind a glass wall stood rows of cryogenic tanks. Some bore recent inspection labels despite the facility’s supposed closure. Others were marked with Sable codes.
Lila whispered, “They never stopped.”
Vale opened a terminal and began copying records.
Ethan searched for Madison. Claire followed the sound of a crying infant through a steel door.
She found Madison in a recovery room, seated on a narrow bed with the baby against her chest. Dr. Kessler stood near an IV pole. Adrian Cross waited beside the door.
His scar looked darker beneath the fluorescent lights.
“Claire Bennett,” Adrian said. “The control child returns.”
Mara raised her weapon.
Kessler lifted both hands. “There is no need for violence.”
“You stole a sick newborn,” Vale said.
“We moved her for treatment.”
“You falsified records and endangered her life.”
Adrian smiled. “Doctors become moral when someone else owns the discovery.”
Ethan moved toward Madison.
She flinched.
“Do not touch me.”
His face twisted. “You lied about everything.”
“I was afraid.”
“You knew the child was not mine.”
“I knew there was a donor. I did not know who.”
“You let me believe.”
Madison looked at Claire with desperate anger. “He made you believe too.”
Claire did not defend Ethan.
Kessler stepped toward the infant. “The child needs a transfusion within hours. Her edited marrow is unstable.”
Vale examined the monitor. “Then release her to neonatal intensive care.”
“She cannot go upstairs,” Adrian said. “Her existence would expose the program.”
“Her existence is already exposed,” Mara replied.
A door opened behind the recovery room.
The man who entered was thin, pale, and connected to a portable oxygen pump. His face resembled Ethan’s around the eyes.
Julian Cross.
Eleanor’s missing son.
Claire knew before he spoke.
“My mother is alive?” he asked.
“Yes.”
Relief briefly transformed him.
Then his gaze settled on Claire.
“You look like Rose.”
Claire felt anger rise. “You used my mother.”
“No. I saved you.”
“You turned my DNA into a breeding program.”
“I tried to stop it.”
“Not hard enough.”
Julian accepted the accusation.
He explained that after the laboratory fire, Adrian helped him disappear. Richard Bennett kept him hidden in exchange for access to his research. Julian believed he could sabotage Sable from within, but his illness worsened and Adrian took control.
“Why call me?” Claire asked.
“Because your mother asked me to protect you.”
“My mother knew you were alive?”
“She helped me escape.”
The revelation cut deeper than Claire expected. Her mother had carried secrets into death, leaving Claire to build a life beside the very family responsible.
A warning alarm sounded.
Vale looked at the baby’s monitor. “Her oxygen is falling.”
Kessler reached for the infant.
Madison pulled away.
Claire knelt beside her.
“Let Vale take her.”
Madison’s eyes filled with tears. “They said if I refused, Ethan would leave me.”
Ethan stood behind them, silent.
Claire spoke softly. “The baby needs a doctor, not another lie.”
Madison surrendered the child.
Vale began emergency treatment.
Mara ordered Adrian and Kessler against the wall. Ethan moved closer to Julian.
“You are my father?”
Julian looked at him for a long moment.
“No.”
Ethan’s hope died visibly.
“My brother Adrian is your biological father.”
Everyone turned toward Adrian.
He laughed.
“Richard wanted a healthy son. I wanted money. We both got what we needed.”
Ethan crossed the room before Mara could stop him and struck Adrian in the face.
Adrian fell against the wall, reached inside his coat, and pulled a small remote device.
“Wrong choice,” he said.
He pressed the button.
Steel doors sealed throughout the basement.
A countdown appeared on every monitor.
Five minutes.
Kessler stared at Adrian in horror. “You said the purge was disabled.”
Adrian wiped blood from his mouth.

“The records cannot leave this building.”
From the cryogenic chamber came the hiss of releasing gas.
