Chapter 12 - The Dark Hospital

Emergency lights illuminated the hospital corridor in dim red.
Backup power activated within seconds, but the pediatric floor’s electronic locks reset during the interruption.
An officer stationed outside Elsie’s room found the stairwell door open.
Nina moved both children into an interior treatment room and remained with them while security searched the floor.
Rowan listened over the phone as Micah asked whether the woman with the white badge had returned.
“No one is taking you anywhere,” Nina told him.
A fire alarm began sounding on the floor below.
Patients were redirected toward the north elevators.
In the confusion, a man wearing a hospital maintenance jacket entered the pediatric corridor.
Security stopped him ten feet from the treatment room.
He presented identification bearing the name Aaron Mills.
The real Aaron Mills was working at another hospital across the city.
The man ran.
Officers caught him in the stairwell.
Inside his jacket they found zip ties, a master access card, and a photograph of Teddy.
Rowan arrived twenty minutes later.
He found Micah sitting beside Elsie, reading her the same picture book repeatedly.
When Micah saw him, he stood.
“You came back.”
The words hurt because they contained surprise.
Rowan knelt.
“I will keep coming back.”
“What if your work calls?”
“They can wait.”
“What if Grandpa calls?”
“He can wait too.”
“What if Mom calls?”
Rowan looked at Elsie.
“Then we answer together.”
Detective Sloan questioned the captured man.
His real name was Peter Lang, a former security contractor paid through an Atlas House account. He claimed he had been ordered only to retrieve the bear.
When told the seal had already been removed, he asked for protection.
“Julian will think I failed.”
“Where is Julian holding Mara?” Sloan asked.
“I never met him.”
“You just used his name.”
Peter realized his mistake.
He requested an attorney.
Police traced the hospital access card to a private supplier located beside the river. Delivery records showed a shipment sent to Warehouse 19 at the eastern freight yard.
Pier Nineteen had been a verbal trick.
The real location was Warehouse 19.
Rowan looked at the clock.
11:18 p.m.
Detective Sloan organized the operation.
“You are not entering.”
“Julian expects me.”
“He expects the seal.”
“I can get him talking.”
“You have two children upstairs who need their father.”
“And their mother is being held in that warehouse.”
Sloan studied him.
“You follow every instruction I give you. If anything changes, you step back.”
Rowan agreed.
Before leaving, he gave Micah the cedar music box.
“Keep this safe.”
Micah held it with both hands.
“Is this the thing the bad people want?”
“They wanted what was inside. The box belongs to our family.”
Micah opened the lid.
The lullaby played.
Elsie smiled faintly from the bed.
“I know that song,” she said.
Rowan turned.
“How?”
“Mom sang it with the other man.”
“What other man?”
“The man from the house.”
Micah shook his head.
“No, Elsie. Miss Celia said there wasn’t another man.”
Elsie hugged Teddy.
“There was. He cried when Mom sang.”
Rowan felt a chill.
“Did you see his face?”
May you like
Elsie nodded.
“He looked like you.”
