Chapter 8 - After the Chandeliers Went Dark

By evening, the ballroom was empty.

The flowers remained untouched. Champagne glasses stood abandoned on the tables. Hundreds of white chairs faced an altar where no vows had been exchanged.

Elena returned to the room after giving her statement to police.

She had changed into a simple black dress. A doctor had examined her injuries and confirmed that she did not need hospital treatment.

Richard stood near the aisle.

“I asked the hotel to remove everything tomorrow,” he said.

Elena looked around.

“Keep the flowers.”

“For what?”

“Donate them to hospitals and nursing homes. Something good should come from today.”

Richard nodded.

They walked together toward the front row.

For the first time in months, Elena felt the full weight of what had happened. Her strength during the confrontation had been fueled by necessity. Now that Nolan was gone, exhaustion replaced it.

“I almost married him,” she said.

“But you didn’t.”

“I kept explaining away every warning.”

Richard sat beside her.

“He spent a long time teaching you to doubt yourself. That does not make his actions your fault.”

“I thought I was smarter than this.”

“Intelligence does not make anyone immune to manipulation.”

Elena looked at him.

“Are you angry with me?”

Richard’s face crumpled.

“At you? Never.”

He took her hand.

“I am angry that you believed you had to protect me from the truth.”

“I was afraid the stress would affect your heart.”

“My heart is affected by knowing you suffered alone.”

Elena rested her head against his shoulder.

Outside the ballroom, reporters waited for answers.

Ward Development’s board scheduled an emergency meeting. Investors demanded information. Employees feared the fraud would destroy the company.

Elena wanted to disappear.

Instead, she held a press conference the following morning.

She stood beside Richard, Maya and representatives of the foundation.

“We discovered that funds were removed through fraudulent contracts,” Elena said. “The full amount will be restored from company reserves while investigators recover the stolen assets. No housing project will be canceled, and no employee will lose work because of the Pierce family’s actions.”

A reporter raised his hand.

“Why did you continue with the wedding after discovering the fraud?”

“To preserve evidence and prevent further transfers.”

“Did you know Nolan might become violent?”

Elena paused.

“I knew he had become controlling. I did not understand how far he would go until the wedding day.”

Another reporter asked whether she felt ashamed.

Elena looked directly into the cameras.

“No. Shame belongs to the people who caused the harm, not the person who survived it.”

The sentence appeared in newspapers across the country.

Thousands of messages arrived from strangers.

Some shared their own experiences. Others thanked Elena for refusing to hide.

Not every response was kind.

Commentators accused her of creating a public spectacle. Victoria’s attorneys claimed Elena had manipulated the evidence to gain control of both companies.

Then investigators released the financial records.

The evidence was overwhelming.

Within two weeks, every missing dollar had been traced.

Several accounts were frozen.

Stephen Vale agreed to cooperate in exchange for a reduced sentence. He provided emails showing that Victoria had planned the scheme before Nolan and Elena became engaged.

Nolan had not met Elena by accident.

Victoria had selected her.

The charity dinner, the consulting offer and the perfect courtship had all been designed to gain access to Ward Development.

Elena read the emails in Maya’s office.

The realization hurt more than she expected.

Maya sat beside her.

“Are you all right?”

“No,” Elena said honestly. “But I will be.”

May you like

She closed the laptop.

For the first time, the future did not frighten her.
