THE WATCH RECORDED EVERYTHING / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10 - THE MAN WHO CLAIMED TO BE HIS FATHER

Adrian Vale looked younger than his official photographs.

His hair was silver at the temples, but his posture was straight and confident. He wore an ordinary dark suit beneath the bank manager’s coat. A small device rested in his right hand.

Nora aimed her weapon at his chest.

“Put it down.”

Adrian looked at her with mild disappointment.

“You always did follow procedure.”

“You’re under arrest.”

“By which authority?”

“State and federal warrants are being prepared.”

“Prepared is not issued.”

Captain Ward moved toward the control panel.

Adrian pressed the device.

The vault door stopped halfway closed.

“If anyone approaches,” he said, “the air system seals.”

Ward stopped.

Ryan studied Adrian.

“You arranged the bank breach.”

“I needed security to focus upstairs.”

“You knew we would find the key.”

“I placed it in Helen’s bag.”

Helen stared at him.

“You entered my bedroom.”

“Many times.”

Ryan took one step forward.

Adrian raised the device.

“Careful.”

Ryan stopped.

“You claim to be my father.”

“I am your biological father.”

“That does not make you family.”

Thomas’s recorded words returned to him.

A father was the man who stayed.

Adrian’s expression hardened slightly.

“Thomas filled your head with sentiment.”

“Thomas raised me.”

“He stole you.”

“He protected me from you.”

Adrian glanced at Nora.

“I protected all my children.”

Daniel’s voice came through Nora’s radio from the state vehicle outside.

“You left me to be arrested.”

Adrian smiled.

“Failure requires consequences.”

Nora turned down the radio volume.

“How many children are there?” she asked.

“More than you know.”

Evelyn stepped forward.

“You used the clinics.”

“I improved weak families.”

“You altered records and inheritance plans.”

“I corrected accidents of birth.”

Vanessa looked sick.

“You chose who married whom.”

“I created introductions.”

“You sent me to Ryan.”

Adrian looked at her.

“You ignored instructions and became emotionally attached.”

Vanessa glanced at Ryan, but he did not look away from Adrian.

“Why did you need me?” Ryan asked.

“The trust recognizes three lines of authority. Mercer loyalty, Vale biology, and beneficiary consent.”

“You had biology.”

“Not without you.”

“Nora is your daughter.”

Adrian’s face became cold.

“Nora rejected her inheritance.”

Nora’s aim remained steady.

“I rejected you.”

“The trust required a biological heir who voluntarily accepted control.”

Ryan understood the engagement, the isolation of Helen, the forged medical reports, and the threats to his career.

Adrian did not merely want Ryan’s signature.

He wanted Ryan desperate enough to accept power.

“You planned to destroy my career,” Ryan said.

“I planned to free you from it.”

“You planned to incapacitate my mother.”

“She was an obstacle.”

Helen did not flinch.

Adrian turned toward her.

“You should have accepted the settlement, Helen.”

“You killed Thomas.”

“I offered Thomas a partnership.”

“You changed his medication.”

“I corrected a dangerous heart condition.”

“You murdered him.”

Adrian’s smile disappeared.

The watch on Ryan’s wrist vibrated.

A new notification appeared.

ARCHIVE CONNECTION ACTIVE.

The tactical watch was still recording.

Ryan kept his expression unchanged.

Adrian continued speaking.

“Thomas would have exposed thousands of protected transactions. Banks would have failed. Hospitals would have closed. Families would have lost everything.”

“Families already lost everything,” Ryan said.

“Some losses preserve order.”

Nora glanced at Ryan’s watch.

She noticed the recording light.

Ryan asked, “Did you kill Nora’s mother too?”

For the first time, Adrian hesitated.

Nora’s voice remained controlled.

“Answer him.”

“Your mother was ill.”

“That wasn’t the question.”

“She had access to files she did not understand.”

“So you killed her.”

“I prevented instability.”

The watch vibrated again.

UPLOAD COMPLETE.

Adrian heard the sound.

His eyes moved to Ryan’s wrist.

“What is that?”

Ryan lifted his hand.

“The watch recorded everything.”

Adrian pressed the control device.

Nothing happened.

Captain Ward had quietly disconnected the vault’s local receiver while Adrian spoke.

The vault door reopened.

State officers entered from both sides.

Nora approached her father.

“Adrian Vale, you are under arrest for conspiracy, unlawful imprisonment, financial fraud, falsification of medical records, and multiple suspected homicides.”

Adrian did not resist as she secured his wrists.

He looked only at Ryan.

“You think this ends with me?”

“No,” Ryan said. “I think it begins with you.”

Outside the bank, dawn was beginning to lighten the sky.

Helen was taken to a hospital under state protection. Caroline and Evelyn entered witness custody. Daniel agreed to provide access codes in exchange for formal consideration, though Nora warned him that cooperation would not erase what he had done.

Vanessa stood alone near the bank steps.

Ryan approached her.

“You threatened my career.”

“Yes.”

“You lied to me for eighteen months.”

“Yes.”

“You allowed your brother into my mother’s house.”

“Yes.”

“Did you ever intend to marry me?”

Vanessa looked toward the rising sun.

“At first, no.”

“And later?”

“That answer would only make things worse.”

Ryan removed the engagement ring from his pocket. Vanessa had left it inside the blue travel bag.

He placed it in her hand.

“There is no later for us.”

She closed her fingers around it.

“I know.”

Ryan turned away.

“Ryan.”

He stopped but did not face her.

“Adrian told the truth about one thing.”

“What?”

“The network is larger than him.”

Ryan looked back.

Vanessa removed a folded paper from the lining of the blue bag.

“I found this beneath the second watch.”

The paper contained a list of names and dates.

Several names had been crossed out.

Others were followed by hospital numbers, property values, and inheritance amounts.

At the bottom was a name Ryan recognized.

Captain Lewis Ward.

Beside it was tomorrow’s date.

Ryan looked toward the captain.

Ward stood near the state vehicles, speaking into his phone.

“Did Adrian target him?” Ryan asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

“This isn’t a target list.”

“What is it?”

“A succession list.”

Captain Ward ended his call.

He walked toward Ryan with an expression Ryan had never seen during all their years of service.

Fear.

“The federal archive received the recordings,” Ward said. “But there’s a problem.”

“What problem?”

“The files show that Adrian didn’t lead the network.”

Ryan looked at the list again.

“Who did?”

Ward glanced toward the bank roof.

A small red light blinked from a security camera that should have been disabled.

“No name,” he said. “Only a title.”

The camera rotated toward them.

Ryan’s watch vibrated.

A private audio file appeared on its screen.

THE FOUNDER REQUESTS A CONVERSATION.

Ryan pressed play.

Thomas Mercer’s voice emerged from the watch.

Not from the old cassette.

Not from a recording made years ago.

The voice sounded clear, close, and alive.

“Ryan, do not trust Helen.”

Ryan slowly turned toward the ambulance carrying his mother.

The vehicle had stopped at the end of the street.

Its rear doors were open.

The stretcher was empty.

Helen was gone.

On the pavement beneath the ambulance lay the framed graduation photograph.

The glass had been removed.

Inside the wooden backing was the missing second half of Thomas Mercer’s recording.

A final handwritten message was taped to it.
