Chapter 8 - The Witness in the Orchard

The courthouse fire began in the western records wing.

Fire crews evacuated the surrounding streets while deputies established a perimeter.

Sheriff Hale remained suspended, but Torres allowed him to advise the investigation.

Emma wanted to go with them.

Torres refused.

“Calvin wants you away from protection.”

“He also wants something beneath the courthouse.”

“You are thirty-four weeks pregnant.”

“And the only person Noah is contacting.”

Mara surprised everyone by supporting Emma.

“Keeping her uninformed has never kept her safe.”

Torres finally agreed to bring them to a command vehicle across from the courthouse.

Flames had not reached the courtroom, but smoke poured from the basement windows.

Investigators determined that the fire had been set in three locations.

A firefighter found a recently opened tunnel beneath the foundation.

The passage connected to an old storm drainage system built when Blackwood Creek flooded the town in 1958.

Hale examined historical maps.

“Samuel could have hidden the journal inside the tunnel.”

Emma looked toward the courthouse clock.

The emergency hearing was scheduled for nine the following morning.

Calvin needed the evidence removed before then.

A deputy approached the command vehicle.

“We found Mr. Bell.”

The archivist had been transported from county detention to a medical clinic after complaining of chest pain.

His transport vehicle never arrived.

The driver had been found unconscious beside a rural road.

Bell was missing.

Torres ordered roadblocks.

Emma studied the storm tunnel map.

One branch extended beneath Blackwood Farm.

The outlet ended near the north orchard.

“Bell doesn’t need the courthouse entrance,” she said.

They returned to the farm.

Rain began shortly after midnight, turning the orchard paths to mud.

Deputies searched the drainage outlet and found fresh tool marks around the iron gate.

Someone had opened it from inside.

Hale followed the tunnel while Emma and Mara waited beneath the porch with Torres.

At 1:43 a.m., the farmhouse telephone rang.

The service had been disconnected for years.

Mara stared at it.

Emma answered.

No one spoke.

She heard water dripping and slow breathing.

“Noah?”

A man whispered.

“The tree remembers where the courthouse forgot.”

The line disconnected.

Emma repeated the message.

Mara looked toward the orchard.

“The wedding tree.”

They hurried outside with Torres.

Lightning illuminated the oldest apple tree.

Water had begun collecting around its roots.

Mara knelt beside the carved names and pushed loose soil away from the trunk.

Beneath the roots was a narrow stone channel.

“The original irrigation line,” she said. “It connects to the courthouse drainage system.”

A metal cylinder had become lodged inside the channel.

Torres pulled it free.

The cylinder contained Samuel’s complete journal and a package wrapped in waterproof cloth.

Inside the package was Noah’s mobile phone.

Emma pressed the power button.

The screen illuminated.

Battery level: forty-three percent.

Someone had charged it recently.

The latest unsent video was dated that evening.

Noah appeared in a dark room.

His face was thinner. A healing scar crossed his temple, but he was alive.

Emma nearly dropped the device.

“Emma, I cannot come to you yet.”

She touched the screen.

Noah continued.

“Calvin believes I died in the crash. Owen Pike pulled me from the truck before it went over the bridge, but he did not save me. He kept me hidden until I agreed to reveal where Samuel stored the ledger.”

Mara covered her mouth.

“I escaped four months ago. Mrs. Whitaker and Mara helped me remain hidden while I recovered.”

Emma looked at her mother.

“You said you didn’t know.”

“I didn’t,” Mara whispered.

Noah’s recording continued.

“I did not contact you because Pike threatened the baby. Every time I moved toward the farmhouse, someone followed.”

He looked off-camera.

“Mrs. Whitaker was supposed to leave the county tonight. I arrived at her house after Bell replaced her pills. She refused to go. She said running would allow Calvin to win.”

Noah lowered his voice.

“After I left, someone else entered.”

The video shifted to security footage from Mrs. Whitaker’s porch.

At 2:08 a.m., Commissioner Owen Pike approached the door.

He remained inside for twenty-two minutes.

When he left, Mrs. Whitaker was no longer visible through the window.

“We have him,” Torres said.

“No,” Hale replied from behind them.

He had returned from the tunnel.

“We have evidence that Pike visited. We still need proof of what happened inside.”

Emma resumed the video.

Noah held up another device.

“Mrs. Whitaker recorded everything. The full file is stored on the old mailbox phone.”

“The phone Bell stole,” Emma said.

“Bell no longer has it,” Torres replied. “We recovered it from his vehicle.”

“The file wasn’t there.”

Noah seemed to answer from the recording.

“The visible memory is a decoy. Evelyn installed a transmitter beneath the courthouse. When the phone receives a specific call, it sends the hidden file to every device connected to the county emergency network.”

Hale understood first.

“That includes Pike’s phone.”

Noah gave the activation number.

The video ended.

Torres entered the number into the mailbox phone.

Before she pressed call, a deputy shouted from the orchard entrance.

Vehicles were approaching.

Calvin Whitaker arrived with two attorneys, a private security team, and a court order.

He stepped from his car beneath an umbrella.

“The probate judge has granted me temporary control of Blackwood Farm until tomorrow’s hearing.”

Torres read the document.

It appeared valid.

Calvin looked toward Emma.

“You have ten minutes to leave my property.”

Emma held Noah’s phone behind her back.

Mara stepped forward.

“This property belonged to Samuel.”

“My brother died without an heir.”

Emma moved beside her.

“He had one.”

Calvin’s eyes settled on Emma’s stomach.

“And by tomorrow morning, the court will decide that he did not.”

The mailbox phone vibrated in Torres’s hand.

A hidden menu appeared.
