Chapter 9 - The Last Recording

Evelyn parked two streets from the Carter house.
The neighborhood remained quiet beneath a gray morning sky. Police tape surrounded the property, but the rear boundary opened into a wooded drainage path.
Evelyn guided Lily through the trees.
She had told the child that Grace was waiting inside.
Lily wanted to believe her.
“Where is Mom?” Lily asked.
“Upstairs.”
“Why is she here?”
“Because she finally understood that families must stay together.”
Lily stopped walking.
Evelyn turned.
“Come along.”
“Officer Sarah said Mom was safe.”
“Officer Sarah lied to you.”
Lily looked at Evelyn’s hand.
Evelyn was holding a key to the back door.
Lily remembered the letters hidden beneath the floor. She remembered Evelyn’s voice on the recordings and the way her father had looked afraid when the police mentioned a second person.
Lily slowly reached into the pocket of her hoodie.
The old phone was gone. Police had kept it as evidence.
But the child specialist had given her a small emergency device with one button.
Lily pressed it.
At the farmhouse, Sarah’s phone alerted.
The device transmitted Lily’s location.
The Carter house.
Sarah and Reed drove toward the neighborhood with Grace in another police vehicle behind them.
Inside the house, Evelyn removed the police notices from the door and led Lily upstairs.
Lily looked into every room.
Her mother was not there.
“You lied.”
Evelyn’s expression remained calm.
“I protected you.”
“No. You made Daddy angry.”
“Your father was already angry. I simply showed him where to place it.”
Lily backed toward the bedroom.
Evelyn followed.
“You caused many problems when you made that call.”
“The police know about you.”
“The police know only what I allowed them to find.”
Lily reached the window.
Patrol cars turned onto the street.
Evelyn heard the sirens.
For the first time, her calm expression broke.
She seized Lily’s arm, but the child pulled away and ran into the hallway.
Evelyn chased her down the stairs.
The front door opened.
Sarah entered with officers behind her.
“Step away from Lily!”
Evelyn stopped near the kitchen.
Lily ran to Sarah.
Grace appeared in the doorway seconds later.
Lily stared at her.
The entire room seemed to fall silent.
“Mom?”
Grace dropped to her knees.
Lily crossed the distance between them and threw herself into her mother’s arms.
Grace held her tightly, repeating her name through tears.
Evelyn moved toward the rear door.
Reed blocked the exit.
“It is over.”
Evelyn glanced around the room as if searching for another person to manipulate.
“You think arresting me fixes this family?”
“No,” Sarah said. “But it gives them the chance to heal without you.”
Evelyn was handcuffed.
As officers led her outside, Grant’s earlier words echoed through Lily’s memory.
She belongs with me.
Lily looked at her mother and finally understood something important.
She did not belong to Grant.
May you like
She did not belong to Evelyn.
She belonged to herself.
