Chapter 14 - The House Anna Never Sold

Anna’s old house stood at the end of a quiet street.

Daniel believed it had been sold shortly after their wedding.

The property records told a different story.

The house belonged to a trust named Seventeen Blue.

Anna had created it six months before her death.

At dawn, Daniel drove there with his security director. Lily remained with Amelia and Sophie at a protected apartment.

Claire insisted on joining him.

“I lived here with Anna for three weeks,” she said as they approached the porch.

“You never told me.”

“I did not know she kept the house.”

The front door opened with the silver key.

Inside, the rooms were nearly empty.

Dust covered the floors, but fresh footprints led toward the kitchen.

Someone had been there recently.

Daniel searched the cabinets.

Claire examined the walls.

“Anna liked hiding things behind ordinary objects.”

Lily’s words returned to Daniel.

The key opens more than the box.

He tried the silver key on a narrow pantry door.

It opened.

Behind the pantry was a staircase descending beneath the house.

The basement contained a desk, two filing cabinets and a wall covered with photographs.

Daniel stared at them.

Anna had documented the Mercer family for months.

Pictures showed Eleanor meeting Thomas Vale.

Rebecca entering the children’s center.

William’s former driver carrying boxes into a warehouse after the plane crash.

One photograph showed Claire speaking to a man whose face had been cut away.

Daniel moved to the desk.

A laptop sat beneath a plastic cover.

His security director powered it on.

The password field appeared.

Daniel tried Lily’s birthday.

Incorrect.

He tried Anna’s birthday.

Incorrect.

Claire touched the sapphire pendant she had recovered from the evidence room after police photographed it.

“Try the number on the token.”

Daniel entered seventeen.

The laptop opened.

Folders filled the screen.

Financial records.

Videos.

Names.

Anna had copied everything.

A document titled Fathers appeared near the top.

Daniel opened it.

It contained DNA reports linked to children from the Monroe Center.

Lily’s file was missing.

Someone had deleted it less than twenty-four hours earlier.

The security director checked the system log.

“The laptop connected remotely last night.”

“From where?” Daniel asked.

“It was routed through Mercer Holdings.”

Daniel stared at the screen.

Only a handful of executives had access to the company’s secure network.

One of them was Daniel.

Another was Eleanor.

Rebecca’s access had been suspended months ago.

Thomas Vale had administrative permission.

And William Mercer’s credentials had never been deleted after his death.

Claire opened another folder.

Inside was a video Anna had recorded in the basement.

Daniel pressed play.

Anna appeared on the screen.

She looked exhausted.

“If you are watching this,” she said, “the original list is no longer safe.”

Daniel moved closer.

Anna continued.

“William Mercer created the financial system behind the illegal adoptions, but he did not work alone. Someone inside the family selected which children could be used to control wealthy clients.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Anna looked directly into the camera.

“Lily was different. Her identity was hidden because her father could expose everything.”

The recording glitched.

Several seconds disappeared.

When the picture returned, Anna was crying.

“I wanted to tell Daniel, but the truth would place him in danger. William believes blood is ownership. If he learns Lily is connected to him, he will never let her go.”

Daniel stopped the video.

“What does that mean?”

Claire stepped backward.

“I told Anna I did not know Lily’s father.”

“You lied.”

“I was afraid.”

“Who is he?”

Claire shook her head.

“I can’t.”

Daniel slammed his hand against the desk.

“My daughter was kidnapped today. My wife was killed. My father may be alive. You will tell me.”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Lily’s father was not someone I loved.”

Daniel’s anger faded slightly.

Claire forced herself to continue.

“I was drugged at a foundation event. Months later, Thomas Vale arranged for me to enter the children’s center. I did not understand why until Anna found the DNA report.”

“Whose name was on it?”

Claire looked toward the photographs of the Mercer family.

Before she could answer, the security director’s phone rang.

He listened for several seconds.

Then he looked at Daniel.

“Sir, there has been an incident at the hospital.”

“Mother?”

“She disappeared from her room.”

Daniel took out his phone.

A new message waited from the unknown number.

Eleanor has come home.

Bring Lily to the Mercer estate before midnight.

Or Anna’s final recording will be erased forever.
