THE VISITOR AT SUNRISE / Chapter 1 / 5

Chapter 1 - The Wedding Gift

Six hours earlier, Marcus Vale had raised a crystal glass before nearly four hundred wedding guests.

The ballroom of the Halcyon Hotel glittered beneath golden chandeliers. Politicians, executives, judges, and celebrities filled the tables. Every detail had been selected to display the power of the Vale name.

Clara sat beside me in her wedding gown, her hands folded tightly in her lap.

Marcus smiled toward the crowd.

“Tonight, I am giving away something precious,” he announced.

The guests quieted.

He looked at Clara, but there was no warmth in his eyes.

“She has always been difficult, emotional, and expensive. Daniel will soon discover that marriage to her comes with responsibilities.”

Scattered laughter moved through the ballroom.

Clara lowered her eyes.

Marcus placed a hand on my shoulder.

“She is nothing more than a gift I’m handing over to you. Take care of her, son. I doubt she would survive without someone managing her.”

The laughter grew louder.

I looked around the room.

Not one person challenged him.

Some guests appeared uncomfortable, but they still smiled. Others watched Marcus carefully, waiting to see how they were expected to react.

Power had trained them well.

I lifted my glass.

“Thank you for showing everyone exactly how you see her.”

Marcus’s smile tightened.

He expected anger. Instead, I calmly returned to my seat and took Clara’s hand beneath the table.

Her fingers were cold.

“Are you all right?” I asked.

“I’m fine.”

She always said that.

During the eight months we had known each other, I had noticed the way she avoided sudden movements. She never wore dresses with open backs. She apologized whenever she dropped something. If a man raised his voice nearby, her entire body became still.

I had asked about Marcus before.

Clara always changed the subject.

I understood silence better than most people. Before meeting Clara, I had spent eleven years investigating financial crimes committed by people whose money made them appear untouchable.

My last case had involved a network of judges, contractors, and elected officials. When the investigation was compromised, three witnesses vanished. My identity was sealed, my records were restricted, and the public was told I had resigned.

Marcus had searched for information about me before approving the marriage.

He found almost nothing.

He assumed that meant I was unimportant.

At 11:30 p.m., Clara and I left the ballroom and went upstairs to the bridal suite.

The moment the door closed, she removed her shoes and leaned against the wall.

“You don’t have to pretend anymore,” I said.

She gave me a tired smile.

“I’m supposed to be happy.”

“You are allowed to feel anything.”

Her eyes filled with tears, but she quickly turned away.

I helped remove the pins from her veil. When I began loosening the lace at the back of her dress, she suddenly reached behind herself.

“I can do it.”

Her voice was sharp with panic.

I stopped.

“Clara, I won’t touch you unless you’re comfortable.”

She closed her eyes.

After several seconds, she lowered her hand.

“It’s all right.”

I carefully loosened the dress.

The white fabric slipped below her shoulders.

My hands froze.

There were scars across her back. Some had faded with time. Others were newer, surrounded by bruising she had hidden beneath makeup and lace.

For several moments, I could not speak.

Clara stared at herself in the mirror.

“Who did this?” I finally asked.

Her lips trembled.

“Please don’t make me say it.”

I looked at her reflection.

“Marcus?”

She began crying without making a sound.

That silence frightened me more than screaming would have.

I gently lifted the dress back over her shoulders.

“He can’t know I told you,” she whispered. “Please don’t fight him. People have tried. No one ever wins.”

I wrapped a blanket around her and guided her toward the sofa.

“I’m not going to fight him.”

Relief flickered across her face.

May you like

Then I picked up my phone.

“I’m going to end him legally.”
