Chapter 14 - The Child With Claire’s Eyes
The girl clung to Evelyn’s coat.
She had dark hair and gray-blue eyes.
Claire’s eyes.
Daniel forgot to breathe.
Evelyn looked exhausted.
Her clothing was wet from the rain.
A small cut marked her forehead.
“How did you get inside?” Samuel asked.
“Arthur built a second access tunnel from the old garden shelter.”
Olivia held her newborns close.
“Is that Claire’s daughter?”
Evelyn looked at the girl.
“Her name is Lily.”
Daniel took a slow step forward.
The child moved behind Evelyn.
He stopped immediately.
“I won’t hurt you.”
Lily looked up at him.
“Are you Daniel?”
His throat tightened.
“Yes.”
“My mother said you would have her eyes.”
Daniel nearly broke.
“Your mother spoke about me?”
Lily nodded.
“Sometimes.”
“Where is she?”
Lily looked toward Evelyn.
Evelyn answered.
“Claire is alive.”
Daniel closed his eyes for a moment.
The video connection had been real.
“She told me not to trust the guardian.”
“She meant me.”
“Why?”
“Because she doesn’t know whether Victor compromised me.”
“Did he?”
Evelyn looked toward the silver case.
“I have spent six years lying to everyone.”
“That includes you.”
Daniel looked at Lily.
“Is she my daughter?”
Evelyn did not answer.
“That is why Victor sent the DNA kit,” Vanessa said.
Evelyn’s gaze shifted toward her.
“You should not be here.”
Vanessa gave a broken laugh.
“I live to disappoint this family.”
Olivia looked at Evelyn.
“Why did Claire let everyone think she was dead?”
“Because Victor controlled the company, the investigators and the medical facility.”
“Claire escaped with help from Arthur Bennett.”
Daniel stared at her.
“My father knew?”
“Yes.”
“He told me Claire died.”
“He believed keeping you uninformed was the only way to protect you.”
Daniel’s voice hardened.
“He stole six years from me.”
“He believed Victor would kill Lily if you searched for her.”
Samuel lowered his gun.
“Arthur amended the trust for Olivia.”
Evelyn nodded.
“Because Claire asked him to.”
Olivia looked surprised.
“She knew about me?”
“Not when Arthur named you.”
“But she reviewed your background after Daniel proposed.”
Daniel looked at Olivia.
“Claire approved the amendment?”
“She insisted the second trustee should be someone outside the Bennett power structure.”
“Someone Victor could not predict.”
Olivia looked at the newborns.
“And yet he used Vanessa to attack me.”
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
Evelyn looked at her with contempt.
“Victor did not force you to strike Olivia.”
“No.”
“I did that.”
For the first time, Vanessa accepted responsibility without explanation.
“I wanted the money.”
“I wanted Daniel.”
“I wanted to believe Claire’s death had taken everything from me.”
“But I made my own choices.”
Olivia did not forgive her.
Daniel did not soften.
Accountability did not erase what happened.
It only removed the final excuse.
Lily looked toward the newborns.
“Are those my brother and sister?”
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
“Maybe.”
The child studied him.
“My mother said you might not be my father.”
Daniel glanced toward Evelyn.
“Why would Claire say that?”
“Because she does not remember everything that happened before the crash.”
Evelyn looked toward the medical terminal.
“She suffered neurological damage.”
“Victor used that uncertainty to convince her that Lily could be his.”
Vanessa moved closer.
“Is that why he wants the DNA test?”
“Yes.”
“If Lily is Daniel’s biological child, she is the original beneficiary.”
“If she is Victor’s, he can challenge the trust and claim Claire’s authority through paternity.”
Samuel frowned.
“That argument would never survive court.”
“It does not need to,” Evelyn said.
“Victor only needs enough uncertainty to freeze the trust.”
“Then he can destroy the evidence while everyone fights.”
Daniel looked at Lily.
“I don’t care about the money.”
Evelyn held his gaze.
“You should.”
“The trust contains the only complete record of Victor’s crimes.”
“If it freezes, his accomplices can erase themselves.”
Olivia looked at the ledger inside the case.
“What is that?”
“The original transaction book.”
Evelyn picked it up.
“Claire stole it from Victor before the crash.”
“It contains coded payments to judges, doctors, executives and investigators.”
“Can you decode it?”
“No.”
“Claire can.”
Daniel looked toward the terminal.
“Where is she now?”
Evelyn hesitated.
“I lost contact three hours ago.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“Victor found her.”
“I don’t know.”
The phone in the silver case rang again.
Victor appeared on the screen.
His composure had changed.
He looked angry.
“You were supposed to bring the child alone.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“You were supposed to believe I had.”
Victor smiled without warmth.
“Claire always chose unreliable people.”
Daniel stepped into view.
“This ends tonight.”
“No.”
Victor looked toward Lily.
“It begins tonight.”
He touched something outside the camera frame.
A live feed appeared on the medical suite’s wall.
It showed a dark room.
Claire sat tied to a chair.
Blood marked the side of her face.
Daniel moved toward the screen.
“Claire!”
She lifted her head.
She was conscious.
Victor’s voice came through the phone.
“Bring Lily and the ledger to the east river warehouse.”
“You have forty minutes.”
Daniel clenched his jaw.
“If you touch her…”
“I already have.”
Lily began crying.
Evelyn covered her ears.
Victor continued.
“Bring no police.”
“Bring no trust security.”
“And bring Olivia’s code.”
Daniel looked toward his wife.
Victor smiled.
“Yes.”
“The woman Vanessa failed to break.”
Olivia held his gaze through the screen.
“You will never get it.”
Victor leaned closer to the camera.
“I don’t need you to give it willingly.”
“I only need Daniel to decide which family he wants to save.”
The connection ended.
Silence filled the medical room.
Daniel looked at Claire on the frozen screen.
Then at Olivia and the newborn twins.
Then at Lily.
Three parts of his life.
One impossible choice.
Olivia spoke first.
“You’re not going alone.”
“You just gave birth.”
“And Victor expects me to be helpless.”
“You need a hospital.”
“I need my children safe.”
Evelyn looked toward the tunnel.
“I can take Olivia and the babies to an emergency clinic.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Victor knows your routes.”
Samuel stepped forward.
“I’ll take them.”
No one trusted him enough to answer immediately.
Vanessa moved toward the elevator.
“I’ll go to the warehouse.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You are the reason Olivia almost died.”
“I know.”
“You think one heroic act will erase that?”
“No.”
Vanessa looked at Olivia.
“But Victor believes I still work for him.”
Olivia’s expression sharpened.
“Do you?”
Vanessa removed her phone.
On the screen was a message from Victor sent only minutes earlier.
FINISH WHAT YOU STARTED.
BRING OLIVIA’S CODE.
Vanessa handed the phone to Daniel.
“He still thinks he controls me.”
Evelyn looked toward Lily.
“We can use that.”
Daniel stared at Vanessa.
“If you betray us…”
“You won’t have to punish me.”
She looked at Olivia.
“I already know what I became.”
Daniel made the decision.
“Samuel takes Olivia and the babies through the tunnel.”
“Evelyn stays with Lily.”
“I go with Vanessa.”
Lily grabbed his hand unexpectedly.
Daniel looked down.
The child held on tightly.
“My mother said you always leave when someone needs you.”
The words pierced him.
Daniel knelt.
“She said that?”
Lily nodded.
“Please don’t leave me too.”
Daniel looked at the girl who might be his daughter.
Then at the image of Claire tied to the chair.
He could not save everyone by separating them.
He stood.
