Chapter 13 - The Promise Arthur Kept

Arthur moved first.
He flipped the metal table.
The music box struck Mercer in the chest.
Daniel tackled the nearest guard.
Emily pulled Anna's chair backward.
Richard threw himself toward Mercer.
A gun fired.
Richard jerked.
Blood spread across his shoulder.
Arthur hit Mercer hard enough to send him into the glass wall.
Daniel wrestled the guard's weapon away.
"Drop it!"
The second guard hesitated.
Emily smashed a medical tray into his wrist.
The gun fell.
Anna kicked it beneath a cabinet.
Arthur grabbed Mercer.
Seventeen years of rage moved through his hands.
Mercer smiled even while choking.
"Do it."
Arthur tightened his grip.
"You want to."
Daniel shouted, "Arthur!"
Mercer whispered, "He couldn't."
Arthur stared.
"Who?"
"Daniel."
Mercer smiled.
"That's why he's weak."
Arthur's face changed.
He released Mercer.
Then struck him once.
Mercer collapsed unconscious.
Arthur turned.
Daniel stared.
"You okay?"
Arthur looked at his scarred hands.
"No."
"Good answer."
Alarms began sounding.
Emily freed Anna.
Richard slumped against the wall.
Blood ran through his fingers.
Anna looked at him.
For a second, hatred and concern fought across her face.
Then the nurse in Emily took control.
"Pressure on the wound."
Anna pressed cloth against Richard's shoulder.
He looked up at her.
"I'm sorry."
Anna's expression hardened.
"Don't die before you explain everything."
Richard almost smiled.
"Fair."
Federal agents entered the wing eight minutes later.
Claire had successfully contacted Special Agent Marcus Hale, an investigator who had quietly followed Sterling-linked medical irregularities for years.
Mercer was arrested.
So were six research staff members.
Servers were seized.
Financial accounts were frozen.
But the complete archive was not at Union Station.
It was exactly where Anna had told Daniel months earlier.
Inside a rural public library.
Rebecca had donated a collection of children's books under an assumed name.
One book contained a micro-storage device hidden inside the spine.
The data transformed the investigation.
Sterling Seventeen was only one of eleven projects.
Human conditioning.
Unauthorized reproductive research.
Veteran medical manipulation.
Illegal genetic testing.
Private detention facilities.
More than forty wealthy donors and corporate sponsors appeared in the records.
Richard Sterling's name appeared hundreds of times.
Sometimes as an administrator.
Sometimes as a participant.
Sometimes as the person who had tried to stop individual experiments.
The truth was neither simple enough to make him innocent nor clean enough to make him purely monstrous.
Daniel read the files in silence.
Arthur watched him.
"How bad?"
Daniel closed the laptop.
"Bad enough that families will spend years learning what happened to them."
Arthur asked, "And Mercer?"
"He'll never walk free."
"Richard?"
Daniel looked toward the hospital room where his father was recovering under federal guard.
"That depends on what he gives them."
Arthur nodded.
"And Anna?"
Daniel looked through another window.
Anna sat beside her infant daughter's incubator.
The child was sleeping.
Emily stood nearby.
For the first time since Arthur had entered Sterling Memorial, the baby's chart carried a mother's name.
ANNA MONROE.
Arthur said, "Monroe?"
"Claire raised her after Rebecca died."
Arthur looked surprised.
"Claire was her adoptive mother?"
Daniel nodded.
"Rebecca trusted her."
"And Anna didn't know?"
"Claire was told never to reveal the truth unless the Sterling program found them."
Arthur watched Claire enter the NICU.
Anna hugged her.
The embrace was complicated.
Grateful.
Angry.
Devastated.
Real.
Arthur understood those emotions.
He was carrying several of them himself.
Daniel said quietly, "You kept your promise."
Arthur frowned.
"What promise?"
"Kandahar."
Arthur remembered the burning convoy.
Daniel half-conscious.
Arthur dragging him away from flames before medical personnel separated them.
Daniel had grabbed Arthur's vest.
"If there is ever a kid..."
Arthur had barely understood him.
"Don't let them take her."
Arthur's eyes filled.
"You remembered that?"
Daniel looked at him.
"Eventually."
Arthur turned toward the baby.
"So that's what you meant."
Daniel shook his head.
"No."
Arthur looked back.
Daniel said, "I wasn't talking about this baby."
Arthur froze.
"What?"
May you like
Daniel's expression darkened.
"That's the part of my memory Mercer spent years trying to erase."
