Chapter 2: The Sister Who Came Crying to the Altar

Lily Hart was twenty-two, beautiful, impulsive, and easier to wound than she wanted anyone to know.
As children, she had followed Emma everywhere.
When Emma climbed trees, Lily climbed after her. When Emma learned piano, Lily begged for lessons. When Emma received praise from their father, Lily smiled at first, then slowly learned to look away.
Vivian noticed.
Vivian always noticed weaknesses.
“Your sister is responsible,” Vivian used to tell Lily. “You are emotional.”
Then she would turn to Emma and say, “Your sister is delicate. Stop making her feel small.”
By the time their father died, the sisters loved each other, but their love was buried under years of quiet poison.
Thomas Hart’s death changed everything.
He had built the Hart Hotel Group from one small property into a national luxury brand. He was warm, stubborn, generous, and far less perfect than the public believed. But he loved his daughters fiercely.
After his sudden death, Emma stepped into the company because someone had to. Lily was still in college. Vivian was too busy giving interviews about grief.
Emma became the serious daughter.
Lily became the forgotten one.
That was when Adrian arrived.
He came as a consultant, recommended by Vivian. He was supposed to help restructure the company’s investments. Within months, he became Vivian’s favorite advisor. Within six months, he was invited to family dinners.
Within eight months, Lily fell in love with him.
Emma saw it before Lily admitted it.
Lily smiled too much when Adrian entered a room. She laughed at jokes that were not funny. She checked her phone constantly, waiting for his messages.
Emma confronted Adrian once in the library.
“My sister has feelings for you,” she said.
Adrian looked genuinely surprised. “Lily is sweet, but she’s a child.”
“She is not a child.”
“No,” he said gently. “But she is not the woman I love.”
Emma should have walked away.
Instead, he looked at her the way no one had looked at her since her father died — as if she was not just the responsible one, not just the daughter holding everything together, but a woman who deserved to be held too.
That was his gift.
Adrian gave people the version of love they were starving for.
To Lily, he was romance.
To Vivian, he was rescue.
To Emma, he was rest.
The engagement happened quickly. Vivian encouraged it with almost frightening enthusiasm.
Lily disappeared from family dinners.
When Emma called, Lily did not answer.
When Emma went to her apartment, Lily opened the door with red eyes and said, “I hope you’re happy.”
Emma did not understand.
Not until the night before the wedding.
That night, an anonymous envelope arrived at Emma’s door.
Inside were screenshots of messages between Adrian and Lily.
My mother won’t allow us to be together.
Emma needs me for the company.
After the wedding, I’ll find a way back to you.
Emma stared at the messages until the words blurred.
Then her phone buzzed.
A video file appeared from an unknown number.
When Emma pressed play, Adrian’s real voice filled the room, colder than she had ever heard it.
