Chapter 4 - The Room Above the Dead Factory

Victor’s confidence began to collapse when the sirens grew louder.

He seized Elena’s arm and pulled her toward him.

“Call them off!” he shouted.

“You told me she belonged to you,” I said. “You admitted stealing her foundation’s money. You admitted keeping her here.”

“I admitted nothing.”

“You’ve been broadcasting live for the last six minutes.”

Victor stared at my lapel.

Then he struck the camera from my coat.

It hit the floor but continued transmitting.

His guards looked toward one another.

They had expected payment from a powerful businessman, not arrest beside a ruined empire.

“Put your weapons down,” I told them. “Victor’s accounts are frozen. He cannot pay you, protect you, or keep your names out of the evidence already sent to federal agents.”

One guard slowly lowered his weapon.

The second followed.

Victor turned toward his personal security chief.

“Do something!”

The man stepped backward.

“You said there would be no federal investigation.”

Victor’s face twisted with rage.

He pulled a small pistol from inside his coat.

Before he could raise it, the lights went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

My team entered through three separate access points. Commands echoed through the building. Victor’s guards were disarmed within seconds.

Emergency lights flickered red along the walls.

I ran to Elena.

Gabriel cut the rope while I caught her. Her body felt frighteningly light in my arms, but she was conscious.

I removed the tape from her mouth carefully.

Her first word was not my name.

“Evidence.”

“What?”

“The desk.”

She pointed weakly toward Victor’s desk.

“There’s a drive beneath the top drawer. I copied everything.”

Even while imprisoned, Elena had been fighting.

Marcus found the drive taped beneath the desk. It contained audio recordings, photographs, payment lists, and messages proving Victor had bribed witnesses and threatened employees.

Victor attempted to run.

He reached the hallway before federal agents surrounded him.

For years, he had walked into rooms expecting people to lower their eyes.

Now he stood beneath a broken light with his hands raised.

“You think this changes anything?” he shouted at me. “She’ll never recover. She’s nothing without me!”

Elena lifted her head from my shoulder.

Her voice was quiet, but everyone heard it.

“I was everything before you.”

Victor stopped struggling.

Elena looked directly at him.

“And I will be everything after you.”

The agents took him away.

Outside, dawn had begun to soften the darkness above the factory. Rain fell across the waiting ambulances and police vehicles.

As the medical team examined Elena, I stood nearby, uncertain whether she wanted me close.

Then she reached out.

I took her hand.

“I’m sorry,” I said.

“For coming?”

“For not coming sooner.”

She closed her eyes.

“He made me believe everyone had forgotten me.”

“I never forgot.”

“You stopped asking when I said I was fine.”

The truth hurt because she was right.

“I should have heard what you weren’t saying.”

Elena opened her eyes again.

“Then hear me now.”

“I’m listening.”

“I don’t want revenge to become the rest of my life.”

I squeezed her hand gently.

“It won’t.”

“What happens next?”

“You choose.”

May you like

For the first time that night, the tension in her face eased.

“That’s all I wanted,” she whispered. “A choice.”
