Chapter 12 - The Son They Bought

Arthur Vance had purchased his son.

That was how Teresa described it.

Thirty-eight years earlier, after three miscarriages and years of infertility treatment, a private physician introduced the Vances to a woman who claimed she could arrange confidential adoptions.

No agency.

No court waiting period.

No interviews.

The infant arrived six weeks later.

Healthy.

Male.

No official birth mother listed on the papers Arthur received.

They paid seventy-five thousand dollars in cash.

Teresa had told herself it was an adoption.

Arthur had told himself money solved paperwork.

They named the baby Julian.

Years later, Arthur quietly arranged legitimate documents through political contacts.

Nobody asked questions.

Nobody wanted to.

“We loved him,” Teresa whispered.

Clara stood across the motel room.

“You bought a newborn and never investigated where he came from.”

“I was desperate.”

“That doesn’t make it acceptable.”

“I know.”

“Does Julian know?”

“No.”

Clara closed her eyes.

Another betrayal.

Another secret inherited by a man fighting for his life.

Cole asked, “Who arranged it?”

“A doctor named Peter Hale.”

Clara’s eyes opened.

“Hale?”

Teresa nodded.

Serena Hale.

Possibly coincidence.

Possibly not.

“What happened to Peter Hale?”

“Died twenty years ago.”

Cole checked his phone.

“No. A Peter Hale matching that description officially died six years ago.”

Teresa frowned.

“That can’t be right.”

“Why?”

“Arthur attended his funeral.”

Clara looked at Cole.

“Six years ago would be one year before Serena joined the company.”

Cole nodded.

They both understood.

Clara asked Teresa, “Did Peter Hale have children?”

“I don’t know.”

“What did he look like?”

Teresa pointed to the silver case.

“There was an old photograph.”

The case was gone.

But Teresa remembered another copy at the mansion.

Police obtained a warrant before midnight.

In Arthur’s private archive, they found a faded photograph inside a family album.

Peter Hale stood beside Arthur at a charity event.

Clara stared at his face.

Sharp cheekbones.

Light eyes.

Narrow mouth.

She had seen those features every day for five years.

On Serena.

Julian received the news the next morning.

Clara sat beside his bed.

“There’s something you need to know.”

Julian listened without interrupting.

When she finished, he stared at the ceiling for nearly a minute.

Then he asked:

“Did they steal me?”

Clara could not answer.

His eyes filled.

“My entire life…”

“Julian.”

“My name.”

“It’s still your name.”

“My family.”

“Whatever they did doesn’t erase your life.”

He laughed bitterly.

“You sound like a doctor.”

“I’m trying to sound like your wife.”

He looked at her.

Despite everything, there was love there.

Painful, damaged, frightened love.

“Were you leaving me?”

Clara froze.

“The night I collapsed.”

“I thought you were having an affair.”

“With Serena?”

“Yes.”

“I wasn’t.”

“I know that now.”

“I should’ve told you.”

“Yes.”

He swallowed.

“Would you have stayed?”

Clara looked at him for a long moment.

“I don’t know.”

That honesty hurt both of them.

But it was cleaner than another lie.

Before Julian could answer, Detective Cole entered.

His expression was grim.

“The DNA comparison came back.”

Julian looked at him.

“And?”

May you like

Cole placed the report on the table.

“The woman from Parcel 17 was almost certainly your biological mother.”
