Chapter 14 - The Choice Nicholas Finally Made

Elise’s pendant had disappeared from her hospital room that morning.

The theft suggested someone close enough to approach her unnoticed. Hospital footage showed a nurse entering at 6:12 a.m., but the badge belonged to a woman on maternity leave. The disguised visitor had remained inside for four minutes.

Elise remembered only a familiar perfume and a whisper near her ear:

One child was returned. The other will be born beyond your reach.

Vivian recognized the perfume description. Lydia Harrow had worn it for decades.

But Lydia remained under armed guard in a prison hospital.

Mara checked the live feed.

The woman in Lydia’s bed was not Lydia.

She was a sedated patient altered with cosmetic prosthetics. Lydia had escaped during the emergency evacuation after the Vale Tower explosion.

Every victory had been planned as cover for her next move.

Mercer regained consciousness long enough to reveal Sofia’s destination: Blackwater Island, a private medical compound off the Atlantic coast owned through a Rane subsidiary. A storm system was moving toward the island. The final ferry had been suspended.

Federal authorities refused an immediate assault without confirmation. Elena knew delay was what Lydia needed.

Edmund offered a Vale Meridian helicopter still registered to his personal trust. Mara assembled a small team. Gabriel insisted on joining because he knew Lydia’s protocols. Nicholas prepared to go.

Elena stopped him beside the hangar.

“Our daughter needs one parent who is not flying into a storm.”

He looked at the baby in Mara’s arms, then at Elena. “You’re right.”

Elena had expected an argument.

Nicholas removed his tactical vest and handed it to Gabriel. “Bring her back.”

It was the choice he should have made on the mansion steps: place his child’s safety above his pride, and Elena’s judgment above his need for control.

As the helicopter lifted, Elena watched him remain on the runway holding their daughter. He looked frightened and powerless, but he did not turn fear into authority.

Blackwater Island emerged through rain like a broken tooth. The compound’s main building was built into the cliff, protected by steel shutters and an underground dock.

Elena, Gabriel, Mara, and four agents entered through a seawater intake tunnel. Inside, they found empty labs, destroyed drives, and medical rooms prepared for neonatal care.

Sofia Mercer lay in a surgical suite, conscious and heavily pregnant.

She panicked when Elena approached. “Lydia said you wanted the baby destroyed.”

“She lied. The embryo was taken from me without consent, and you were used too.”

Sofia began to cry. “I thought I was carrying a child for a family who could not conceive.”

“You are not the criminal here.”

A contraction seized her.

The fetal monitor alarmed.

Dr. Reeve, connected by satellite, said the baby was in distress. The storm made evacuation impossible. They would have to deliver on the island.

Elena stayed beside Sofia while Gabriel searched for Lydia. Mara secured the halls. Wind battered the shutters.

The birth became an act of resistance against everyone who had treated bodies as property. Sofia chose Elena to hold her hand. Elena chose to reassure her instead of seeing only the stolen embryo. When the baby boy was delivered, he cried immediately.

Elena wept.

He was biologically hers and Nicholas’s, but Sofia had carried him, risked her life for him, and awakened each night to his movements. No ledger could simplify that truth.

“What happens to him?” Sofia asked.

Elena looked down at the child. “No one decides tonight except the people who kept him alive.”

A gunshot sounded in the corridor.

Gabriel entered, wounded in the leg. “Lydia is heading for the dock.”

Mara pursued her through the storm. Elena remained with Sofia and the newborn. Minutes later, an explosion shook the island.

The underground dock collapsed.

Mara returned soaked and bleeding. Lydia’s boat had been destroyed against the rocks. No body was recovered.

At dawn, the storm weakened enough for evacuation.

Nicholas met the helicopter at the mainland hospital. He saw Elena carrying the newborn boy and stopped several feet away.

“Is he ours?” he asked.

Elena answered carefully. “Biologically. But Sofia carried him. We will not repeat what was done to us by treating her as invisible.”

Nicholas nodded. “Then we listen to her.”

Sofia chose to remain part of the child’s life. After legal counseling, she and Elena agreed on a guardianship arrangement that recognized both the genetic crime and Sofia’s role. The courts would take months, perhaps years, but for once the child’s future would not be decided in a hidden room.

Weeks passed.

Thomas Rane was indicted. Charles Wren and Owen Mercer entered plea agreements. Vivian pleaded guilty to fraud and obstruction. Edmund established a public commission for the switched families. Gabriel accepted no Vale title and no inheritance, but he began using the name Gabriel Marlowe in honor of Elise.

Vale Manor was transferred to the restitution foundation.

Elena moved with the children into a modest house near the sea. Nicholas rented a place nearby. He visited, changed diapers, attended hearings, and never entered without invitation.

One evening, Elena found him repairing the old suitcase at the kitchen table.

“The handle was loose,” he said.

She watched him work. “You once threw it into the driveway.”

“I know.”

“And now?”

“Now I understand it carried more truth than our mansion.”

Elena did not forgive him in a grand declaration. She placed a cup of coffee beside him and sat across the table.

It was not a reunion.

It was the first honest beginning.

Then Gabriel arrived with a package recovered from Blackwater Island.

Inside was a third newborn wristband.

The name printed on it was ELENA VALE.
