Chapter 13 - The Trial of Cassandra Vale

The criminal proceedings lasted eight months.

Cassandra refused every early plea agreement.

She insisted Thomas had manipulated events to destroy her.

Her attorney portrayed her as an adopted daughter who had been emotionally exploited by a powerful family.

Julian took a different approach.

He cooperated.

In exchange for consideration at sentencing, he provided financial records, messages, and testimony.

Cassandra called him a coward in open court.

Julian did not look at her.

Amelia testified for two days.

The defense attorney tried to make her appear resentful.

"Major Hart, you disliked Ms. Vale before your father's death, correct?"

"I distrusted her."

"Because she had a relationship with your former fiancé."

"No."

"That didn't bother you?"

"It bothered me when I thought Julian was still committed to me. After he ended our relationship, who he dated was his decision."

"But Cassandra eventually married him emotionally, if not legally."

Amelia almost smiled.

"I'm not familiar with emotional marriage as a legal category."

Several people in the courtroom laughed.

The judge asked for silence.

The attorney continued.

"Isn't it true you were furious when you discovered Ms. Vale inherited control of Hart Maritime?"

"I knew she hadn't."

"Because you had secret documents."

"Because my father told me the amendment was fake before he died."

"So you already expected to inherit."

"No."

"What did you expect?"

Amelia looked toward the jury.

"My father."

The courtroom became silent.

"I expected my father to be alive."

The attorney changed direction.

Cassandra testified.

For the first hour she remained composed.

She described Thomas as controlling.

Amelia as distant.

Julian as manipulative.

Cole as incompetent.

Everyone had failed her.

Everyone except Cassandra.

Then the prosecutor played the video.

The courtroom watched Thomas clutch his chest.

They watched Cassandra search.

They watched Julian hesitate.

They watched Cole delay.

Cassandra looked down.

The prosecutor paused the video immediately after Thomas asked:

"You would let me die for a notebook?"

He approached Cassandra.

"What was more important to you at that moment, Ms. Vale? Thomas Hart's life or the notebook?"

Cassandra's voice shook.

"I panicked."

"For thirty-seven minutes?"

"I didn't understand how serious it was."

"Dr. Cole told you to call."

"He wasn't certain."

"Julian Mercer told you to call."

"He panicked too."

"Thomas Hart himself asked you to call."

Tears appeared in Cassandra's eyes.

"I loved him."

The prosecutor stared at her.

"Then why didn't you help him?"

Cassandra broke.

"He was going to take everything."

The courtroom froze.

Her attorney closed his eyes.

Cassandra realized what she had said.

The prosecutor spoke softly.

"Everything."

She looked around.

"No."

"What was everything?"

"I meant my career."

"The company?"

"No."

"The money?"

"No."

"The house?"

"I don't know."

The prosecutor returned to his table.

"I have no further questions."

The verdict came four days later.

Guilty on the major financial fraud counts.

Guilty on evidence destruction.

Guilty on conspiracy.

Cole was convicted on separate charges involving falsified medical records and reckless medical conduct.

Julian pleaded guilty before his own trial.

Cassandra was not convicted of intentionally killing Thomas.

Prosecutors never claimed she had planned his death.

But the court found that her actions during his medical emergency contributed to a preventable delay.

At sentencing, Amelia was allowed to speak.

She stood facing the judge.

Cassandra sat several yards away.

Amelia held no notes.

"Cassandra spent years believing my father gave me something he refused to give her."

She looked toward Cassandra.

"She was wrong."

Cassandra stared back.

"My father gave Cassandra education, work, trust, opportunity, and love."

Amelia's voice remained calm.

"He gave me the same thing."

She paused.

"The difference was that I never believed love gave me ownership of him."

Cassandra lowered her eyes.

Amelia continued.

"I don't want revenge."

Nathaniel watched from the gallery.

"I wanted my father alive."

Her voice broke slightly.

"No sentence can give me that."

She looked at the judge.

"So I ask only that the court recognize what happened. Not because Cassandra hated my father, but because she valued control more than his safety when it mattered most."

Amelia returned to her seat.

Cassandra received a substantial prison sentence.

Cole lost his medical license and received prison time.

Julian received a shorter sentence due to cooperation but lost his law license permanently.

As officers prepared to take Cassandra away, she turned toward Amelia.

"You won."

Amelia stood.

"No."

Cassandra frowned.

"You lost everything."

Amelia looked at her father's empty seat in the courtroom.

"So did I."

Cassandra's anger disappeared.

For perhaps the first time, she understood.

There had never been a prize.
