The Sound Behind the Garage Door

Daniel woke shortly before midnight.

Grace stood beside his hospital bed while Officer Cole waited near the window.

Daniel’s voice was weak, but his memory was clear.

For three weeks, he had been helping Grace repair water damage in the garage. Behind a loose wall panel, he found a metal storage box that must have been left there before the divorce.

The box contained financial records from Andrew’s property development company.

At first, Daniel assumed they were ordinary business papers. Then he noticed Grace’s name on several loan documents.

The signatures looked almost perfect.

But Grace had never signed them.

According to the records, Andrew had used property belonging to Grace’s late father as security for several business loans. He had also transferred money through accounts created under Grace’s name.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Grace asked.

“I wanted to confirm it before frightening you,” Daniel replied. “I spoke with an attorney this morning. She said the records could prove fraud.”

Andrew must have learned about the discovery.

Daniel had returned to the house to collect the documents before the contractor arrived. He made coffee and began sorting the files at the table.

Then Andrew entered through the garage.

“He demanded the envelope,” Daniel said. “When I refused, he said Grace would never understand what he had sacrificed for the family.”

Officer Cole leaned forward.

“Did he admit the documents were real?”

“Yes. He said they were the only thing standing between him and prison.”

Daniel had secretly activated the voice-recording feature on his phone.

But after the confrontation, the phone was missing.

Without the recording, Andrew could deny everything.
