Chapter 8 - The Door Beneath the Kitchen

Gideon fell against the table, blood spreading across his shirt.
Arthur pulled him behind the stone island while Victoria seized the emergency pistol from one of Gideon’s guards. The shooter fired again from the hidden staircase, then retreated through the steel door below.
Maya pressed towels against Gideon’s wound.
“Stay with me,” she ordered.
Gideon managed a faint smile. “You should have been a commander.”
The house security system announced that all exterior entrances had locked. The Blackthorne Protocol had sealed the estate with everyone inside.
Arthur descended the stairs first. Victoria followed despite his attempt to stop her.
The steel door opened onto a chamber larger than the kitchen above it. Old monitors lined one wall. Filing cabinets filled another. At the center stood a circular table engraved with the Blackthorne crest.
A trail of blood led to a service tunnel.
The shooter had been wounded.
Arthur found a dropped mask near the tunnel entrance. Inside was a strand of silver hair.
“Conrad?” Victoria asked.
Arthur shook his head. “His hair is dark.”
On the circular table lay five envelopes marked with names.
ARTHUR.
VICTORIA.
LUCAS.
ELEANOR.
THE HEIR.
Arthur opened his. It contained a letter from Samuel.
My son, whether you were born first or brought home second, you are mine by love. But love cannot excuse cowardice. If you protect the person who harmed your brother, the house will strip you of every power I gave you.
Victoria’s envelope contained a key and a single sentence.
You were chosen because you can leave.
Eleanor appeared at the top of the stairs wearing a silk robe and holding a gun.
“Step away from the table.”
Arthur stared at her. “You shot Gideon.”
“No. I came when the alarm sounded.”
The silver hair made Victoria uncertain. Eleanor’s hair was silver, but so was Gideon’s. Another elderly person could have fired from the darkness.
Eleanor descended slowly.
“You have no idea what you activated,” she said. “This protocol was designed by a dying man obsessed with punishment.”
“Samuel designed it to expose you,” Arthur said.
“Samuel designed it because he no longer knew which son was loyal.”
Victoria held up the key from her envelope. “What does this open?”
For the first time, Eleanor looked afraid.
“Nothing you should touch.”
A monitor flickered to life behind them.
Conrad appeared on the screen from an unknown location.
“Congratulations,” he said. “The domestic incident has been transmitted to every board member. Victoria is now under emergency medical review, Arthur has been recorded assaulting his wife, and the staff have witnessed both.”
Maya shouted from upstairs, “We recorded the real angles.”
Conrad smiled. “Did you?”
The hidden camera beneath the fruit bowl sparked and melted.
Every backup drive in the room flashed red.
Victoria realized the protocol had not protected evidence. It had gathered it into one system Conrad could attack.
Then another figure entered Conrad’s frame.
Sofia.
Maya screamed.
Conrad placed a hand on the girl’s shoulder.
“You rescued the wrong sister,” he said.
The Sofia in the hospital was not Maya’s sister.
The false Sofia left behind a notebook filled with copied memories. Most pages contained facts taken from school files and social media, but several described moments never recorded anywhere. Maya remembered telling those stories only inside Blackthorne House. Someone had listened through walls for years.

One entry described Sofia hiding beneath Maya’s bed during a thunderstorm and asking whether rich families were ever afraid. Maya had answered that rich people purchased quieter places to be afraid in. The replacement had repeated that sentence at the hospital with the exact pause Sofia used.
Maya’s grief changed into fury. The girl had not stolen Sofia’s identity willingly; she had been trained until another person’s childhood crowded out her own. Maya asked investigators to search for her not as an accomplice but as a victim. Victoria supported the demand. Arthur allocated security resources. Lucas, still unseen, sent a location where three more replacement subjects were later found. Each rescue proved that the invisible brother was not merely hunting revenge. Somewhere inside his anger, he was still trying to save strangers.
