Chapter 9 - THE EMPTY COFFIN

Thomas Carter was buried in a private family mausoleum outside the city.
Evelyn had not visited in nearly a year.
She arrived after midnight with Daniel and Nora.
The key from the envelope opened the iron gate surrounding the Carter section.
Daniel examined the mausoleum door.
“This could be a trap.”
“So could everything else.”
Evelyn inserted the key.
The lock turned.
Inside, cold air carried the smell of stone and dust.
Thomas’s crypt occupied the central wall.
A bronze plaque displayed his name and dates.
BELOVED FATHER, VISIONARY, HEALER.
Evelyn touched the engraved letters.
For three years, she had spoken to this wall whenever grief became too heavy.
Now she wondered whether the wall had ever contained him.
Daniel found a small keyhole hidden beneath the plaque.
The key opened that too.
The entire plaque shifted forward.
Behind it was a narrow compartment containing a digital recorder and a sealed vial.
The vial was labeled E-1.
Nora held it up.
“It appears to contain preserved blood.”
Evelyn took the recorder.
The battery still worked.
She pressed play.
Static filled the mausoleum.
Then Thomas’s voice began.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“My dearest Evelyn,” the recording said. “If you are hearing this, then William has failed to keep the past buried.”
Her knees weakened.
Daniel moved closer, but she raised a hand to stop him.
Thomas continued.
“I owe you a truth I was too afraid to give while I lived. You were born from a program that should never have existed. I told myself I protected you. In reality, I protected my company, my reputation, and the people who helped create you.”
Evelyn gripped the recorder.
“Margaret believed Lakewood could eliminate suffering before birth. Julian believed the work could change medicine. Vale believed it could make him immortal in history. I believed I could control them.”
A long pause followed.
“We were all wrong.”
Nora stood silently beside the door.
“You were the only subject to survive the first cardiac adaptation process. Your body became the template for Helix. Every successful version of the treatment began with material taken from you.”
Evelyn looked at the vial.
E-1.
“I told you the blood tests were necessary because you were fragile. The truth is that I used your cells to repair the damage we caused.”
Thomas’s voice broke.
“I loved you as my daughter. But love does not erase what I did.”
Evelyn felt tears slide down her face.
“Ryan was born through a later program. Margaret authorized modifications without my knowledge. His behavior is not predetermined, but his neurological structure was altered. She wanted a son who would be fearless. Vale gave her a child who could not properly recognize danger.”
Nora covered her mouth.
“There were others. Subject M and Subject J survived. I do not know where they are now. Julian took the records when he disappeared.”
The recording crackled.
“If Vale learns Helix-R is ready, he will come for you. The treatment does more than repair the heart. It may reverse cellular aging in modified subjects. Vale does not want the company. He wants your living template.”
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
His expression had changed.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
“You knew,” she whispered.
Daniel shook his head.
“Not this.”
Thomas’s recording continued.
“Do not trust anyone who tells you Julian is dead. Do not trust Margaret when she claims she was only protecting her children. And Evelyn, if Daniel Reed is standing beside you, ask him why his father’s name appears in the Lakewood security logs.”
The recorder slipped from Evelyn’s hand.
It struck the stone floor.
Daniel did not move.
Nora stared at him.
Evelyn’s voice sounded distant even to herself.
“Your father?”
Daniel looked toward the open doorway.
“My father was a federal investigator.”
“At Lakewood?”
“He was assigned to investigate the fire.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because he disappeared during the case.”
Thomas’s recording continued from the floor.
“Daniel may not know the truth. But his family is tied to ours. Everyone who enters this story carries someone else’s secret.”
A sound echoed outside the mausoleum.
Footsteps.
Daniel drew his weapon.
The lights went out.
Nora screamed as the iron gate slammed shut.
A voice came through the darkness.
“Place the notebook and the vial on the floor.”
Evelyn recognized the distorted voice from Ryan’s kidnapping video.
“Where is my brother?”
“Alive.”
“Prove it.”
A phone screen illuminated outside the gate.
Ryan appeared in a live video, still tied to the chair.
Behind him stood Margaret.
She was not restrained.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Give them the vial, Evelyn.”
Evelyn stepped toward the gate.
“You’re working with them.”
Margaret’s voice came through the phone.
“I am keeping Ryan alive.”
“You knew about Lakewood.”
“I tried to prepare you.”
“You attacked me through my medical records.”
“I did what was necessary.”
“Where are you?”
Margaret glanced toward someone outside the video frame.
“Do not ask questions you are not ready to answer.”
The call ended.
A metal cylinder rolled through the gate.
Daniel shouted for everyone to move.
White gas filled the mausoleum.
Evelyn tried to hold her breath.
The last thing she saw was a shadow entering through the gate.
May you like
When she opened her eyes, the vial was gone.
So was Daniel.
