THE SIGNATURE IN HER NAME / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - The Page That Fell

Emily did not sleep that night.

She lay beside Daniel until his breathing slowed, then went to Lily’s room and sat between her children while the first light appeared beyond the curtains.

By morning, she had made three decisions.

She would not confront Daniel again.

She would not tell him what Rachel had discovered.

And she would not allow him to isolate the children from her.

At eight, she called Claire and asked her to meet them at a playground. Once the children were occupied, Emily explained everything.

Claire listened without interrupting.

When Emily finished, her sister stood so abruptly that the bench shook.

“We’re going back for your things.”

“Not yet.”

“He threatened to take Ben and Lily.”

“That’s why I can’t give him a reason to claim I abandoned the house.”

“He is having an affair and stealing your inheritance.”

“We need proof.”

Claire paced across the grass.

“You have the email photograph.”

“It proves he discussed a proxy. It doesn’t prove the transfer was completed.”

“What about the recording?”

“I didn’t record it.”

Claire stopped.

“You left without recording them?”

“I was trying not to get caught.”

Emily’s voice broke for the first time.

“I’m sorry.”

Claire sat beside her and took her hand.

“You have nothing to apologize for.”

Rachel joined them twenty minutes later. She had received partial records from Eleanor’s former accountant.

The documents confirmed that the Vale Trust owned forty-one percent of Northstar Holdings and the Hawthorne house.

They also revealed something more alarming.

Three months before Eleanor’s death, someone had attempted to replace Emily as successor trustee.

The request had been rejected because Eleanor’s signature did not match previous samples.

“Who filed it?” Emily asked.

“Martin Calder.”

“On Daniel’s behalf?”

“The form names Vanessa Cole as the proposed successor.”

Claire stared at Rachel.

“Vanessa was trying to inherit everything?”

“Not inherit,” Rachel said. “Control.”

Emily looked across the playground. Ben was helping Lily climb onto a swing.

“Why Vanessa?”

“Because Daniel could not replace you with himself without attracting attention. Vanessa may have agreed to hold the assets temporarily.”

“Or Daniel promised her they would be hers.”

Rachel nodded.

“There is another issue. Bellweather Bank recorded a security interest against the Hawthorne property at one this morning.”

“They used the false recording.”

“Possibly. I’m preparing an emergency challenge, but we need the document submitted with the application.”

“Can you get it from the bank?”

“Not before Monday.”

Emily thought of Martin’s briefcase.

Daniel had said he was filing for divorce on Monday. The timing was not accidental. If he obtained control of the assets before filing, he could present Emily as financially dependent and unstable.

“What happens if the bank releases the money?” she asked.

“Northstar receives forty-eight million dollars.”

Claire nearly shouted.

“Against Emily’s house?”

“Against the trust portfolio. The house is only one asset.”

Emily felt the scale of the betrayal open beneath her.

Daniel had not planned to replace her with Vanessa simply because he wanted a new relationship.

He needed to remove Emily before she discovered she controlled his company.

Rachel placed several papers into a folder.

“I can seek an injunction Monday morning. Until then, stay calm. Do not sign anything.”

At noon, Daniel called.

“Come home,” he said.

“I’m with Claire.”

“Bring the children.”

“Why?”

“Because we need to discuss the separation.”

“You said Monday.”

“I changed my mind.”

Emily looked at Rachel.

Rachel shook her head.

“I’ll come alone,” Emily said.

“No. Bring them.”

“I won’t involve the children.”

Daniel’s voice hardened.

“They already know their mother is destroying the family.”

Emily ended the call.

Ten minutes later, a message arrived from Ben’s school account.

DAD SAYS WE HAVE TO CHOOSE WHO WE LIVE WITH. DO WE?

Emily’s chest tightened.

Daniel had already spoken to him.

She drove home with Claire following behind. Rachel remained nearby and told Emily to call the police if Daniel blocked her from leaving.

When they arrived, two open suitcases stood on the driveway.

Emily’s clothes were scattered around them.

Daniel waited near the garage holding a stack of papers.

Vanessa stood on the steps wearing the pearls again.

Ben saw his belongings beside Emily’s suitcase.

“Dad?”

Daniel ignored him.

He threw the divorce papers onto the clothes.

“Take your bags. Vanessa moves in tonight.”

Lily began crying.

Emily lifted her.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“This house has no room for a leech.”

Claire started toward her, but Emily raised one hand.

She would not give them the scene they wanted.

She touched the real deed hidden in her purse.

“Are you certain this house belongs to you?”

Daniel’s face tightened.

“Stop pretending you have anything left.”

Then the document slipped from his briefcase.

It landed beside Emily’s shoe.

She saw her forged signature.

Daniel noticed too late.

Emily picked it up, placed the children in her car and drove away before he could retrieve it.

Claire followed her to Rachel’s office.

Inside the conference room, Emily unfolded the page.

Rachel read it once.

Then again.

“This is worse than we thought.”

“How?”

“This is not only a property transfer. It claims you surrendered all voting rights in Northstar.”

“Can they use one forged page to take everything?”

“Not legally.”

“Daniel doesn’t seem worried about legality.”

Rachel studied the notary section.

The transfer had been witnessed by Martin Calder and notarized by a woman named Patricia Wynn.

Rachel searched the state database.

Patricia Wynn’s notary license had expired eighteen months earlier.

Claire exhaled.

“So the document is useless?”

“No,” Rachel said. “It is fraudulent. That makes it evidence.”

Emily looked at the signature.

“Can we prove I didn’t sign it?”

“I’ll send it to a forensic examiner tonight.”

Rachel turned the page over.

A faint indentation marked the paper, as though another sheet had been written on top of it.

She shaded the surface lightly with a pencil.

Letters emerged.

MEET AT VALE HOUSE. MIDNIGHT. BRING ORIGINAL BIRTH FILE.

Emily stared at the words.

“What is Vale House?”

Rachel’s expression became guarded.

“Your grandmother’s country property.”

“She sold it when I was a child.”

“No,” Rachel said. “She told everyone she sold it.”

The office phone rang.

Rachel answered.

Her face changed as she listened.

“What do you mean the archive room is empty?”

Emily stood.

Rachel ended the call.

“Someone broke into Eleanor’s former accounting office last night. They took every file connected to your trust.”

“Who knew the records were there?”

“Daniel. Martin. Me.”

“And Vanessa?”

“Possibly.”

Emily looked at the faint message again.

“Midnight is in four hours.”

Claire shook her head.

“You’re not going.”

Rachel was already gathering her coat.

“We all are.”

When they reached Vale House at eleven-forty, the old iron gate was open.

A black car waited beneath the trees.

May you like

Its engine was running.

Inside the abandoned house, a single light burned in an upstairs window.
