Chapter 5 - DANIEL'S LETTER)

Vanessa read Daniel's letter aloud only once.

Afterward she folded it carefully and held it against her chest as if it were the last physical thing connecting them.

Vanessa,

If Richard gives you documents about the store, do not sign them without Evelyn Grant reading them.

I know you trust him.

I did too.

But he's lying about what Covenant Holdings is.

The store is not a burden Mom needs to release.

It is something people are trying to take.

I should have told you sooner.

I thought I could fix it before you had to worry.

That was arrogant.

I'm sorry.

If something happens before I get this sorted out, trust Mom before you trust Richard.

She can be impossible.

She can also smell a lie from three rooms away.

I love you.

Daniel.

Richard waited until Vanessa finished.

Then he sighed.

"A frightened man wrote that."

Margaret almost admired the speed of the response.

No shock.

No grief.

No hesitation.

Just reinterpretation.

Vanessa looked up.

"My husband was frightened of you?"

"He misunderstood me."

"He named you."

"He was under enormous stress."

Margaret said, "Convenient."

Richard ignored her.

"Vanessa, you know how Daniel struggled near the end."

Vanessa frowned.

"He wasn't struggling."

"Emotionally."

"He was grieving his father."

"And managing debt."

Margaret's eyes sharpened.

"What debt?"

Richard looked almost pleased.

"The store's."

"There is no major store debt."

"Are you certain?"

Margaret felt the trap.

Richard opened his Bible.

From between the pages he removed copies of loan documents.

He placed them on the table.

The signatures appeared to be Daniel's.

The loans totaled more than four hundred thousand dollars.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Margaret took the pages.

The paper looked legitimate.

The bank logos were correct.

But Daniel's signature looked slightly wrong.

Too neat.

"What bank?"

Richard told her.

Margaret knew the institution.

"Why do you have these?"

"Daniel asked for pastoral counseling."

"Pastors don't usually keep loan records inside Bibles."

"I was helping him."

Vanessa stared at the documents.

Richard moved closer to her.

"This is what I tried to spare you."

Margaret saw Vanessa begin to fall back into his story.

She slapped the papers against the table.

"Then we call the bank."

Richard's voice became flat.

"Tonight?"

"Tomorrow."

"Margaret."

"If they're real, we learn something. If they're fake, we learn something better."

Richard closed his Bible.

His eyes no longer looked pastoral.

"You assume every disagreement is an attack."

"No. Just the ones involving forged paperwork and stolen money."

Vanessa looked between them.

"Stolen money?"

Richard turned toward Margaret.

"You told her?"

"I told her about my money."

"You have no proof I took anything."

"Then you won't mind an audit."

Richard's composure cracked.

Only slightly.

But Vanessa saw it.

He left less than five minutes later.

Before reaching the door, he stopped beside Margaret.

"Christmas gatherings are supposed to bring families together."

Margaret looked up.

"Then don't come."

Richard smiled without warmth.

"I'll pray you become more reasonable before then."

When he was gone, Vanessa locked the door.

Twice.

Margaret noticed.

The following morning Evelyn contacted the bank named on the supposed loan papers.

No loans existed.

The documents were false.

That afternoon Margaret met Claire Morgan.

Claire chose a coffee shop forty minutes away from Covenant Fellowship.

"No church property," she explained.

"Why?"

"Because Richard has access to most of it."

Margaret handed her copies of Daniel's notes and the fake loan paperwork.

Claire read everything slowly.

When she reached Daniel's mention of her, she removed her glasses.

"He spoke to me."

"When?"

"Four months before he died."

"What did he say?"

"He asked whether the church had formal rules regarding financial pressure on vulnerable adults."

Margaret hated the phrase vulnerable adult.

Claire saw her reaction.

"It doesn't mean incapable."

"I know."

"It means someone whose circumstances can make exploitation easier."

Margaret tapped the metal brace.

"My circumstances."

"Your injury. Grief. Age. Isolation after losing Daniel. All of those can be exploited."

Margaret nodded.

"Richard seems interested in all four."

Claire leaned back.

"I've had concerns about him for almost a year."

"Why didn't you report them?"

"I did."

Margaret looked surprised.

"To whom?"

"The church board."

"What happened?"

"Nothing."

"Why?"

"Richard chairs the board meetings."

Margaret stared at her.

Claire continued.

"Two elderly members changed their wills after private counseling with him. Another sold property to a company connected to one of his donors."

"Covenant Holdings?"

"No. But now I wonder."

Margaret felt the scope widening.

"What do you need?"

"Evidence that Richard personally benefits."

"I have corporate filings."

"That helps. Evidence linking pressure to profit would be stronger."

Margaret thought of the missing deposits.

Claire said, "Christmas gathering is in twelve days."

"I know."

"Richard told the board he expects a major announcement."

Margaret's stomach tightened.

"What announcement?"

Claire hesitated.

"That Hayes Family Market is becoming part of Covenant's ministry."

Margaret laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because rage sometimes needed somewhere to go.

"He announced my decision before I made it."

Claire nodded.

"Which means he believes you're going to sign."

Margaret looked at her.

"Why would he believe that?"

Claire's answer was quiet.

"Because whatever he plans to do next, he thinks it will work."

That evening Margaret returned home and found a package on her porch.

Inside was a photograph of Vanessa leaving her obstetrician's office.

A red circle had been drawn around her pregnant belly.

There was no message.

Margaret called Vanessa immediately.

No answer.

She called again.

Still nothing.

Then the doorbell rang.

Harold stood outside.

His face was soaked with rain.

"Let me in."

Margaret did not open the door.

"What do you want?"

Harold looked over his shoulder.

May you like

Then directly into the security camera.

"Richard knows Daniel left evidence."
