Chapter 6 - The Principal’s Offer

Principal Shaw did not take them to his office.

He led them through the administration wing and into the board conference chamber, a room students rarely saw.

Portraits of Ashbourne’s founders covered the walls.

Richard Vale waited beside the long table.

So did Mr. Corwin.

Autumn was absent.

Two folders had been placed at the empty seats.

Principal Shaw closed the door.

“You have created a serious situation,” Richard Vale said.

Willa almost laughed.

She had been assaulted through threats, plagiarism, and a home invasion, yet he spoke as if her refusal to disappear were the offense.

Counselor Bell remained standing.

“How did Principal Shaw know about the break-in?”

Richard Vale ignored the question.

He turned toward Elliot.

“Your audiovisual club depends on board funding.”

Elliot’s hands curled at his sides.

“Is that a threat?”

“It is context.”

Then Richard looked at Counselor Bell.

“Your pension review begins next year.”

“My employment record is flawless.”

“Records can be interpreted.”

Finally, he looked at Willa.

“You are intelligent. That makes your recent choices disappointing.”

Willa said nothing.

He opened the first folder.

Inside was a scholarship agreement.

Not her existing scholarship.

A new one.

Full tuition through graduation, university placement support, housing assistance, and a financial grant for Elena Hart.

Willa stared at the number.

It was more money than her mother earned in three years.

“All you need to do,” Richard Vale said, “is withdraw your accusation and acknowledge that the similarities between the works resulted from shared classroom instruction.”

“You want to buy my silence.”

“I want to protect every student involved from unnecessary damage.”

“Autumn stole my art.”

“Autumn is under extraordinary pressure.”

“So am I.”

“You are not carrying the future of a charitable foundation.”

Willa pushed the folder away.

“No.”

Richard’s voice remained controlled.

“Read the second document.”

The other folder contained disciplinary charges.

Academic dishonesty.

Harassment.

Unauthorized access to security footage.

Defamation of a student and faculty member.

If pursued, the charges could result in expulsion.

Willa looked at Principal Shaw.

“You approved this?”

He avoided her eyes.

Mr. Corwin spoke gently.

“Willa, no one wants to punish you.”

“You already did.”

“I tried to mentor you.”

“You used me.”

His expression tightened.

“You do not understand what happened.”

“Then explain it.”

Richard Vale interrupted.

“Elias, do not engage.”

That was the moment Willa understood the balance between them.

Mr. Corwin was involved.

But Richard Vale controlled him.

Willa turned to the art teacher.

“What does he have over you?”

Mr. Corwin went pale.

Richard closed the disciplinary folder.

“You have until tomorrow morning.”

“For what?”

“To choose which version of your future you prefer.”

Counselor Bell placed both hands on the table.

“This meeting is coercive.”

“It is confidential,” Richard replied.

“Not anymore.”

Elliot removed his phone from his pocket.

A red recording symbol glowed on the screen.

Principal Shaw stepped toward him.

Elliot backed away.

“The file already uploaded.”

Richard Vale’s calm finally cracked.

“You foolish boy.”

The insult echoed through the chamber.

Elliot smiled nervously.

“That sounded good on the recording too.”

Richard moved around the table.

Mr. Corwin seized his arm.

“Don’t.”

For several seconds, the two men stared at each other.

Something passed between them.

Fear.

Recognition.

An old agreement beginning to fracture.

Richard slowly pulled free.

“Leave,” he said.

They did.

In the corridor, Counselor Bell exhaled shakily.

“We have the offer and threat recorded.”

“Will it be enough?” Willa asked.

“It proves retaliation.”

“But not the theft.”

Elliot held up his phone.

“There’s more.”

During the meeting, the device had automatically scanned nearby wireless networks.

One hidden network had appeared inside the board chamber.

VALE_ARCHIVE_PRIVATE.

Willa frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“It means there may be a private server somewhere in this building.”

Counselor Bell looked back at the closed doors.

“A server containing what?”

May you like

Elliot’s expression darkened.

“Maybe every version of the truth they thought they deleted.”
