Chapter 13 - The Boy Who Returned From the Lake

No one spoke.

Daniel stared at the woman in the bed.

“I was twelve when my father died.”

Elena’s eyes remained fixed on him.

“A boy was pulled from the water that night.”

“Yes. Me.”

“He had no pulse for eleven minutes.”

“I survived.”

“He was not Richard’s son.”

Daniel looked at Thomas.

The old man appeared genuinely confused.

Elena lifted one trembling hand.

“Bring me the mirror.”

Clara found a small mirror on the bedside table and held it up.

Elena did not look at herself.

She angled it toward Daniel’s neck.

“Behind his left ear.”

Daniel touched the skin.

There was a faint scar he had possessed for as long as he could remember.

Vivian had told him it came from striking the boat during the accident.

Elena said, “He was implanted.”

Ross stepped forward.

“With one of the capsules?”

“An earlier device.”

Daniel felt suddenly cold.

“Why?”

“To create a replacement.”

“A replacement for whom?”

“Richard’s son.”

Clara moved beside him.

“Daniel is Daniel.”

Elena studied her.

“You always defended him.”

“Did I know him as a child?”

“You knew the boy who became him.”

Daniel’s memories of childhood before the lake were incomplete. He remembered the estate, private tutors, Adrian’s cruelty, Vivian’s rules.

But many memories felt like photographs rather than lived experiences.

“What was my original name?” he asked.

Elena closed her eyes.

“Subject Eleven.”

Thomas staggered backward.

“No.”

Elena turned toward him.

“You carried Seven out during the fire. Richard carried Eleven.”

Thomas pressed one hand to the wall.

Daniel looked between them.

“My father took me from Orison.”

Elena nodded.

“His biological son was ill. The experiments had damaged him. Richard believed he could replace the child without Vivian knowing.”

“But Vivian raised me.”

“She discovered the substitution.”

“When?”

“At the lake.”

The room’s old monitor activated.

A recording began.

The dock appeared again, but this footage started earlier.

Richard stood beside a twelve-year-old boy.

Daniel.

Another child lay in the boat, motionless.

The second boy looked almost identical.

Richard argued with Vivian.

“This has gone far enough,” he said.

Vivian pointed toward the unconscious child.

“You replaced my son with that thing.”

“He is a child.”

“He is property.”

Young Daniel stood frozen on the dock.

Richard handed him the silver key.

“Run to the house.”

Adrian emerged from the darkness and struck Richard.

The footage jumped.

Daniel saw himself fall into the water with his father.

Vivian pulled one boy into the boat.

The video could not clearly show which one.

Elena whispered, “The boy who woke at the hospital was not the one Vivian intended to save.”

Daniel’s mind reeled.

“Then who died?”

“Richard’s biological son.”

“Why did Vivian continue raising me?”

“Because admitting the truth would expose Orison.”

Clara held Daniel’s hand tightly.

“You are still Daniel.”

He looked at her.

“Am I?”

“You are the man who raised our children.”

A crashing sound came from the elevator.

Ross ordered one officer to secure the entrance.

The doors opened.

Michael stood inside.

His restraints were gone.

Blood ran from his wrists.

He held a pistol taken from a guard.

“Step away from Elena.”

Ross aimed at him.

“Drop the weapon.”

Michael smiled.

“You still think she is a victim?”

Clara moved protectively in front of Daniel.

Michael’s expression softened.

“Clara, I came back for you.”

“You abducted me.”

“I freed your memories.”

“You implanted Sophie.”

“Thomas implanted her.”

“Under your orders.”

“Under Elena’s.”

Everyone looked toward the bed.

Elena appeared suddenly stronger.

The frailty vanished from her eyes.

Michael approached.

“The Garden did not awaken because Vivian brought Sophie here,” he said. “It awakened because Elena called her.”

Daniel looked at the tubes connecting Elena to the system.

“She has been controlling it.”

“For years.”

Thomas shook his head.

“Elena was in a coma.”

Michael laughed.

“She was the Garden.”

Elena looked at Sophie’s empty place on the map above her bed.

“Subject Twelve was always meant to find me.”

Clara stepped backward.

“You used my daughter.”

“I created the path that produced her.”

“You don’t own her.”

“No,” Elena said. “She owns everything.”

An alarm sounded upstairs.

Ross’s radio activated.

A panicked officer shouted.

“Detective, Sophie’s transport never reached surgery.”

Daniel grabbed the radio.

“Where is she?”

“We found the stretcher. The child and Dr. Ortiz are gone.”

Michael smiled.

“Elena’s people have them.”

Daniel lunged.

Ross blocked him as Michael raised the gun.

Elena spoke calmly.

“Bring Subject Twelve to the original house.”

“What original house?” Clara demanded.

Elena looked at Thomas.

“The farm was never yours.”

Thomas closed his eyes.

Daniel understood.

The Hale farm had been part of Orison.

The papers Vivian burned were not merely guardianship forms.

They were property records.

May you like

Elena smiled at Clara.

“You grew up above the first laboratory.”
