Chapter 12 - The Gala of Masks

Before the first shot, the ballroom had been a theater of rehearsed gestures. Guests touched elbows instead of embracing. Rivals praised one another's charities. Young heirs studied older faces to learn which scandals could be mentioned and which names required immediate silence. Celeste moved among them with the sensation of walking through a living ledger. She recognized people from Meridian documents who had never personally ordered violence but had accepted miraculous promotions, favorable rulings, or conveniently ruined competitors. Complicity, she realized, often wore the expression of someone grateful not to know the price of a gift.
The revelation changed everything.
Ruth Calder had never married, yet the place card named her Ashbourne. Eleanor explained that Ruth was Adrian’s adoptive sister. After Adrian’s death, she protected Lydia’s birth records and later entered the Ashbourne archives under a false identity.
Beatrice had not abducted her.
Gideon had.
The bloody portfolio was meant to convince Celeste otherwise.
At seven in the evening, the Ashbourne Grand opened its doors.
Luxury cars lined the street. Cameras flashed beneath the marble entrance. Inside, the ballroom glowed with chandeliers, white orchids, and rows of champagne glasses. The same guests who influenced markets and ministries arrived smiling, unaware that evidence of their private agreements slept beneath their feet.
Celeste entered in the white tuxedo.
The black gloves completed the image Marianne had left behind.
Whispers followed her. Gideon’s people recognized her, but none moved. He wanted the confrontation public. A private arrest would suggest fear.
Lydia arrived twenty minutes later on Gideon’s arm.
She wore silver and looked every inch the chosen heir. Gideon smiled at cameras while his fingers held her wrist too tightly.
At the center table stood Eleanor’s antique coupe.
Lydia did not look at it.
Jonas entered disguised as foundation security. Mira worked from the projection booth. Ward’s officers waited beyond the hotel perimeter, their warrants sealed until the archive authenticated.
Beatrice was nowhere visible.
Celeste moved through the guests, noting exits, guards, and the senator from the recovered film. He was now eighty-six and stared at her gloves as though seeing a ghost.
Gideon began his speech.
He praised legacy, duty, and family. He spoke of Lydia as the future of the Ashbourne name. The audience applauded.
Then he invited her to sign.
A leather folder opened before her.
Lydia lifted the pen.
Celeste reached the champagne table.
Gideon watched her across the ballroom.
For one dangerous second, the entire plan balanced between their eyes.
Lydia placed the pen on the page but did not write.
“My grandfather taught me that an Ashbourne signature is permanent,” she said into the microphone. “So before I give mine, I would like to see his.”
The guests laughed uncertainly.
Gideon’s smile vanished.
Celeste removed one black glove and placed the tiny gold key on the table.
“You searched every vault except mine.”
The confrontation unfolded exactly as planned until the screen began loading.
Then the lights went out.
A hand seized Celeste’s wrist.
“You were never supposed to survive the fire.”
She recognized the voice.
Ruth Calder.
Emergency lights flashed red.
Ruth stood beside her, alive, blood on her sleeve. She took the gold key and pushed Celeste toward the floor as gunfire erupted from the balcony.
“Down!” Ruth shouted.
She had not attacked Celeste. She had saved her.
Masked shooters fired toward Gideon, Lydia, and the screen. Guests screamed and crawled beneath tables. Jonas returned fire from the stairs. Mira kept the projection system alive on emergency power.
Ruth pressed the key into Celeste’s palm.
“Gideon has a second team beneath the ballroom,” she said. “They are going to destroy Adrian’s recording.”
Celeste saw Gideon disappear through a service door.
Lydia was no longer beside the podium.
The screen displayed six words.
THE HEIR HAS OPENED THE FIRST DOOR.

A trapdoor beneath the champagne table opened.
Celeste, Ruth, and Jonas descended into darkness while above them the ballroom filled with sirens, smoke, and the screams of people who had believed wealth could protect them from history.
