Chapter 3 - The Secret Between Them

I did not confront Amelia immediately.

Emotion demanded answers. Training demanded proof.

For the next several days, I watched the marriage I thought I understood begin to reveal its hidden shape.

Amelia had known Dominic in high school. They had dated briefly before she left Montana for college.

She told me their relationship had ended badly.

She had never mentioned that they remained in contact.

Phone records obtained under the federal warrant showed dozens of encrypted messages between them during the previous six months. Some were personal. Others concerned my movements.

“Logan left at nine.”

“He asked about the sheriff’s vehicles.”

“He keeps his second phone locked.”

The discoveries arrived one after another.

Amelia had not brought me to Red Creek to repair our marriage.

Dominic had asked her to bring me.

He had learned through military contacts that a federal investigation was approaching, though he did not know who led it. When he discovered my connection to Amelia, he convinced her that I was hiding money and preparing to leave her.

He promised to help her “protect herself.”

In exchange, she reported my calls, meetings and routines.

Whether she knew the full extent of his crimes remained unclear.

That uncertainty hurt almost as much as the betrayal.

One night, I returned home and found Amelia sitting in the dark.

“You’ve been following me,” she said.

“No.”

“Dominic says someone has been watching his cabin.”

“Why would that concern you?”

Her face went still.

I turned on the lamp.

“Where were you last Thursday?”

“With Claire.”

“I spoke to Claire this morning.”

Amelia stood.

“You called my friend?”

“She said she hasn’t seen you since we arrived.”

The silence between us lasted several seconds.

Then Amelia laughed nervously.

“You’re twisting things.”

“Where were you?”

She walked toward the kitchen.

I stepped in front of her, leaving enough distance that she could pass if she chose.

“Move,” she said.

“I won’t stop you from leaving. But I want an answer.”

“You don’t own me.”

“I never said I did.”

“Dominic understands this town. He understands me.”

The words escaped before she could pull them back.

I felt something inside me settle.

Not break.

Breaking was loud and chaotic.

This was quieter.

A door closing.

“How long?” I asked.

Amelia looked away.

“It isn’t what you think.”

“That usually means it is exactly what I think.”

“He was helping me.”

“With what?”

“With you.”

I almost smiled at the absurdity.

“With me?”

“You disappeared into your work for years. You never told me anything. Every time the phone rang, you left the room. You expected me to follow you from one posting to another and act grateful.”

“Did that give you permission to report my movements to a man under federal investigation?”

Her face turned pale.

“Federal investigation?”

I studied her reaction.

It looked genuine.

“You didn’t know?”

“Know what?”

I could not reveal more.

“Ask Dominic.”

Amelia grabbed her coat.

“Maybe I will.”

She drove away.

Twenty minutes later, surveillance confirmed that she entered Dominic’s cabin.

I stood in our empty living room and removed my wedding ring.

Then I placed it inside the drawer beside the federal warrant authorizing the final phase of the investigation.
