THE SHADOW IN THE NURSERY / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4 - The Papers in Valerie’s Bag

Valerie placed the envelope on the changing table.

She did not open it.

Instead, she approached the crib and looked down at Noah as if inspecting something she had ordered.

“He has Richard’s eyes,” she said.

Jason stood beside her.

“He has Emma’s eyes.”

“For now.”

Emma tightened her grip on the rocking chair.

“What does that mean?”

Valerie ignored the question.

She wore her silver hair in a flawless twist, and not a single drop of rain marked her coat despite the weather worsening outside.

“I heard you’ve been confused,” Valerie said.

“I’m not confused.”

“You misplaced several days of medicine.”

“They disappeared.”

“You accused Jason of hiding them.”

“I asked where they went.”

Valerie exchanged a glance with her son.

The look passed quickly, but Emma saw it.

A silent confirmation.

They had discussed what they would say before Valerie arrived.

“Exhaustion can make new mothers frightened,” Valerie continued. “Sometimes they imagine that the people closest to them are enemies.”

“Sometimes the people closest to them are enemies.”

Jason stepped forward.

“Emma, stop.”

Valerie’s smile remained in place.

“Caroline filled your head with suspicion before she died.”

“You knew she contacted me?”

“I knew everything Caroline did.”

“Then you know she warned me about this house.”

The room became quiet.

Jason looked toward the changing table.

Valerie’s eyes sharpened.

“What exactly did she tell you?”

“Why don’t you open the envelope?”

Valerie lifted it.

“These are temporary medical authorization forms.”

“For what?”

“So Jason can speak to your doctors and make decisions if you’re unable to.”

“I’m able.”

“You could barely stand when I arrived.”

“Because something is wrong with my medicine.”

Jason walked toward the door.

“I told you not to encourage this, Mom.”

Valerie remained focused on Emma.

“The authorization is standard. You signed similar hospital forms before Noah’s birth.”

“I didn’t sign this.”

“You haven’t seen it yet.”

“Then show me.”

Valerie slid the papers from the envelope.

Emma recognized her name, address, and trust information. Near the bottom of the final page was a signature resembling hers.

It was not hers.

Emma knew the difference immediately. The capital E leaned too far forward, and the final stroke crossed beneath the surname.

Jason had practiced her signature once while signing holiday cards. He made the same mistake every time.

“You forged this.”

Jason moved closer.

“No one forged anything.”

“I didn’t sign it.”

“You signed several documents after delivery.”

“I was awake.”

“You were exhausted.”

“I would remember giving you control of my medical care and my trust.”

Valerie placed the papers back inside the envelope.

“The trust remains yours.”

“Unless I’m declared incapable.”

Jason’s eyes widened slightly.

Emma understood she had found the center of their plan.

The trust agreement allowed a court-appointed guardian to approve withdrawals for Emma’s care. As her husband, Jason would be the first person considered for temporary authority.

They did not need Emma dead.

They needed her helpless, isolated, and officially unreliable.

Noah cried inside the crib.

Emma rose carefully.

Valerie blocked her path.

“You should stay seated.”

“Move away from my son.”

“We’re trying to help you.”

“Then give me Jason’s phone.”

Valerie’s expression hardened.

“That would only upset you.”

Emma reached around her.

Valerie caught Emma’s wrist.

The contact was brief but firm.

Jason closed the nursery door.

For the first time, Emma understood that the open mountain view outside did not mean freedom.

She was trapped.

Then a telephone began ringing downstairs.

Not Jason’s mobile phone.

The old landline beside the kitchen wall.

Jason and Valerie looked at each other.

Jason hurried out.

Emma had been told the landline had been disconnected years earlier.

A moment later, she heard Jason answer.

“Who is this?”

Silence followed.

May you like

Then Jason said a name Emma had not expected to hear.

“Caleb?”
