Chapter 8 - The Morning After

By noon, news of Alistair’s removal had reached the company.
Thomas refused to issue a dramatic public statement. The official notice said only that the board had appointed interim leadership following an internal compliance review.
Privately, the effect was immediate.
Alistair’s office access was disabled.
His executive card stopped working.
His assistant transferred all company appointments to the interim president.
The driver who had waited outside the family home for five years returned the company sedan to headquarters.
Alistair stood in the marble entrance hall with two suitcases and watched the car disappear down the driveway.
Nicole did not celebrate.
She had imagined this moment many times, yet victory was not the feeling that came.
She felt exhausted.
Thomas approached with a set of documents.
“These establish a temporary financial arrangement for you and Nolan,” he said. “They do not require you to remain in this house.”
“I don’t want Nolan to think we are running away.”
“Leaving a harmful situation is not running away.”
Nicole looked toward the staircase.
“He loves this house.”
“Children can love a place and still need something different.”
Thomas offered her another folder.
Inside were details for a smaller home in a quiet Phoenix neighborhood, close to Nolan’s school. The property belonged to Thomas personally, not the family trust.
“You may use it for as long as you need,” he said. “No conditions.”
Nicole closed the folder.
“I don’t want charity.”
“It isn’t charity. It is a door. You decide whether to walk through it.”
Later that afternoon, Nicole took Nolan to see the house.
It had three bedrooms, a small garden, and a porch shaded by a mesquite tree. There was no chandelier or polished marble, but sunlight filled the kitchen.
Nolan walked slowly from room to room.
“Is Dad coming here?”
“No.”
“Are we in trouble?”
Nicole crouched beside him.
“No, sweetheart.”
“Then why are we leaving Grandpa’s house?”
“Because sometimes a new home helps people feel peaceful again.”
Nolan looked through the window at the garden.
“Can I put my telescope outside?”
“Yes.”
“Can Mason visit?”
“Of course.”
He nodded.
“Can we have birthday cake here?”
Nicole smiled through sudden tears.
“We can have as much birthday cake as you want.”
That evening, they returned to the Hawthorne estate to collect their belongings.
Alistair was gone.
On Nolan’s bedroom desk, Nicole found the small hand-drawn calendar with every day crossed out.
The final square remained empty.
Nolan entered behind her.
“I forgot to cross it out.”
Nicole handed him the blue pencil.

He looked at the date for a long moment.
Then, instead of drawing an X, he drew a small candle.
