THE SECOND PROFILE / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5 - THE BIRTH CERTIFICATE

Olivia obtained the sealed hospital records before sunrise.

She did it through an emergency court petition, three phone calls, and a judge who had once worked with Celeste Mercer.

The documents confirmed that Celeste had delivered twin girls.

The first child was recorded as Elena Grace Mercer.

The second was recorded as Eleanor Celeste Mercer.

Both babies were healthy.

Three days later, a protective order removed Eleanor from the hospital under authority of a federal program that officially did not exist.

No adoption records followed.

No death certificate existed.

No school enrollment, vaccination record, tax identification, or employment history could be found under Eleanor’s name.

She had entered the world and disappeared.

Elena sat in Olivia’s office while the city brightened beyond the windows.

Camille occupied the chair near the door.

Detective Sloane had released her after confirming that her conversations with Noah matched her statement. She had been deceived, monitored, and deliberately placed inside Elena’s home.

Elena still did not trust her.

But she no longer blamed her for believing a sophisticated lie.

Olivia spread the hospital documents across the conference table.

“There is another problem.”

Elena looked at her.

“The blood type listed for Elena Grace Mercer is AB negative.”

“My blood type is O positive.”

“Eleanor’s blood type is O positive.”

Camille leaned forward.

“So she is Eleanor?”

Olivia shook her head.

“Hospital records from nearly four decades ago can contain errors. We need genetic testing before drawing conclusions.”

Elena studied the papers.

“What happened to the child named Elena?”

“No records.”

“And which name did my mother use when she brought me home?”

“Elena.”

Camille spoke carefully.

“Maybe she switched the names.”

Elena turned toward her.

“Why would she do that?”

“To hide the child who stayed.”

Olivia pointed to the protective order.

“The order does not identify the agent or agency that removed Eleanor. It only says the transfer was authorized because of a credible threat connected to Bellweather Analytics.”

“My mother worked there before I was born.”

“Yes.”

“What was her position?”

“Publicly, she was a financial compliance officer.”

“And privately?”

Olivia slid another file across the table.

“I found this among her old legal correspondence.”

It was a letter Celeste had written to an attorney six months before the twins were born.

Celeste claimed Bellweather was creating duplicate identities for intelligence operations and private clients.

The company called each fabricated identity a second profile.

At first, the technology had been used to protect witnesses and undercover agents.

Then wealthy customers began purchasing new identities to escape debts, investigations, or marriages.

Eventually, Bellweather developed something more valuable.

Instead of creating a fictional person, the company could copy an existing one.

The copy could open accounts, sign documents, pass biometric scans, and appear on surveillance footage.

Celeste intended to expose the program.

Before she could, someone threatened her unborn children.

The final paragraph of the letter had been underlined.

If anything happens to me, the archive must never reach the child who knows she is hidden.

Elena read it twice.

“The child who knows she is hidden.”

Olivia nodded.

“Your mother may have raised one daughter publicly while someone else raised the other in secrecy.”

“And the hidden twin knew about me.”

“Possibly.”

Camille looked at the false passport.

“The woman who entered the bank vault could be her.”

Elena thought of the security footage Sloane had described.

A woman with her face.

“Why would my sister pretend to be me?”

“To open the vault,” Olivia said.

“She could have contacted me.”

“Unless she believes you are the threat.”

Elena looked at Noah through the glass wall of the adjoining office. He had been released pending further investigation but remained under police supervision.

He had not stopped watching her.

Camille followed Elena’s gaze.

“He told me something else.”

Elena turned back.

“When?”

“Last week. We were discussing his wife’s death. He said you died after discovering you had a sister.”

Noah had been building his lie from pieces of Elena’s real life.

“What exactly did he say?”

“He said your sister became obsessed with taking your place. He claimed she caused an accident and disappeared.”

“Did he give her a name?”

“Eleanor.”

Elena looked toward Noah again.

He had known about the twin before the false passport appeared.

She walked into the adjoining office.

Noah stood.

“You knew.”

“Elena—”

“You knew I had a sister.”

“I knew there might have been another child.”

“You told Camille that Eleanor killed me.”

“I needed her to believe you were dead.”

“Why?”

“To convince the profile to contact her.”

“That explanation makes no sense.”

“It does if the profile was watching everyone I matched with.”

Elena approached him.

“You used Camille as bait.”

“Yes.”

“You brought her into our home.”

“The profile instructed her to bring the pearls and passport there. I needed to know what would happen next.”

“You could have told the police.”

“I did not know which officers were compromised.”

“You could have told me.”

His expression broke.

“I was afraid the person contacting me was you.”

Elena stared at him.

“Why would you think that?”

“Because three months ago, I saw you enter a hotel room with Victor Hale.”

“I have never met Victor privately.”

“I watched you.”

“No. You watched someone with my face.”

Noah looked down.

“I know that now.”

Elena’s phone vibrated.

A new message from the second profile appeared.

A video file.

She opened it.

The footage showed Celeste Mercer sitting behind a desk.

Her mother looked younger, perhaps in her early forties. She held a baby wrapped in a white blanket.

“If you are watching this,” Celeste said, “then Noah Whitmore has finally told you enough truth to become dangerous.”

Noah stepped closer.

Elena raised one hand, stopping him.

On the video, Celeste looked directly into the camera.

“One of my daughters was taken to protect the archive. The other was left with me to protect the key.”

Celeste lowered her eyes toward the baby.

“I named both of you Elena.”

The video ended.

A second file appeared.

It contained a location and a time.
