Chapter 8 - What He Was Hiding

Owen crossed only three yards before the side gate burst inward.

Two federal agents entered with their weapons drawn, shouting commands.

The driver of the SUV accelerated away, but police vehicles blocked the street. Tires screeched beyond the fence.

Owen stopped.

For one second, it seemed he might surrender.

Then he turned toward Claire and Ava.

Claire saw the panic in his eyes. He was no longer planning. He was searching for leverage.

Claire stepped in front of her daughter.

“Don’t,” she said.

Owen raised the weapon slightly.

Samuel moved closer from the side.

“Owen, look at me.”

Owen’s gaze shifted.

Claire saw Samuel’s intention. He wanted Owen focused away from the child.

The agents repeated their commands.

Owen’s arm trembled.

Diane stood behind the patio furniture, tears streaming down her face.

“Please,” she said. “You’re my son.”

Owen looked at her.

That single moment of hesitation ended the confrontation.

Samuel knocked Owen’s wrist aside while the agents closed the distance. The weapon fell onto the grass. Owen was forced to the ground and handcuffed without a shot being fired.

The backyard became silent except for Diane’s sobbing and the fading sirens outside.

Ava wrapped both arms around Claire’s waist.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Is he?”

Claire looked toward Owen.

He lay beside the green mat while an agent searched him.

“He’s alive.”

The agent removed a small key, two phones and a folded piece of paper from Owen’s pockets. Another agent searched the ankle holster and found a sealed plastic drive hidden beneath it.

Samuel watched closely.

“That may be what he came for.”

“What is it?” Claire asked.

Owen laughed bitterly from the ground.

“You’ll never open it.”

Samuel placed the drive in an evidence bag.

“We’ll see.”

A second team entered through the gate with a man in custody. He had been driving the SUV. Claire recognized him as one of the catering workers who had arrived that morning.

The man’s name was Leo Vance, a former Mercer Construction employee who had disappeared after Nathan’s death.

When Diane saw him, she covered her mouth.

“Leo worked for us.”

Samuel nodded.

“He also purchased the warehouse used after Rivergate.”

Diane looked at Owen.

Her grief turned to horror.

“What did you do?”

Owen did not answer.

Claire expected anger. Instead, she felt a deep exhaustion.

For years, she had wondered why Nathan became so distant before his death. Why he spent nights searching records and then closed his computer whenever she entered the room.

He had not been hiding betrayal.

He had been trying to protect her.

Samuel approached Claire.

“Agents found original Mercer Construction security records inside the SUV. Owen was planning to use the company’s remaining access contracts.”

“To rob another bank?”

“Possibly several.”

Claire looked toward the table where the unsigned transfer agreement rested beneath a plate.

“He needed control of the company.”

“And your signature would have given it to him.”

Diane heard them.

Her face collapsed.

“I brought him here. I pressured you.”

“You didn’t know.”

“I refused to listen.”

Ava tightened her grip on Claire.

Samuel lowered his voice.

“There is something else.”

Claire knew from his expression that the worst part had not yet been revealed.

“The encrypted drive recovered from Nevada contained a message from Nathan,” he said. “It was recorded the night before he died.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Samuel continued carefully.

“He knew Owen had returned to the country. He arranged to meet an investigator the following morning.”

“He died before the meeting.”

“Yes.”

“Was his death natural?”

“We need to examine the evidence before answering that.”

Claire looked at Owen.

For the first time since his arrest, he appeared afraid.
