Chapter 11 - The Death Before the Fire)

Elizabeth Hale had died eleven months before the guesthouse burned.

Official cause was metastatic ovarian cancer.

Richard had never questioned it.

Why would he?

Her physicians were among the best in the country.

Martin Keller supervised her care.

That fact now made Richard feel sick.

Amelia sat beside him in the family library that evening.

It was her first time inside the Hale house in eight years.

Nothing had changed.

That made it worse.

Her mother’s piano remained near the windows.

Her childhood photographs remained on the shelves.

Her bedroom upstairs still contained books she had abandoned at twenty-six.

Richard had preserved a dead daughter’s room while the living woman struggled in a one-bedroom apartment.

“I need Elizabeth’s medical files,” he told David.

“They’re old.”

“Find them.”

Amelia walked to the piano.

“Mom thought Keller was brilliant.”

“So did I.”

“You trusted him.”

“I trusted Eleanor too.”

Richard looked tired suddenly.

“I’m beginning to wonder whether I trusted anyone worth trusting.”

Amelia turned.

“Evan.”

Richard looked at her.

“You could have trusted Evan.”

“Yes.”

The admission was painful.

“I should have.”

Amelia sat opposite him.

“You were awful to him.”

“I know.”

“You had investigators follow him.”

“I know.”

“You offered him money to disappear.”

Richard looked ashamed.

“I know.”

Amelia studied him.

“Why?”

“Because I thought every person who came near you wanted something from us.”

“He wanted me.”

“I understand that now.”

She nodded.

It was not forgiveness.

But it was movement.

David arrived after midnight.

He had located Elizabeth’s original oncology records from a private archive.

The first diagnosis showed stage two disease.

Treatable.

A second report six weeks later suddenly classified it as stage four metastatic cancer.

Richard frowned.

“That progression is possible.”

“Yes.”

David placed another page beside it.

“But the pathology numbers don’t match.”

Amelia leaned closer.

“What does that mean?”

“The tissue sample ID on the second report belonged to another patient.”

Richard went silent.

“Keller switched the results?”

“Possibly.”

“Why?”

David had another file.

“Elizabeth planned to remove Eleanor from the foundation on March 14.”

Richard remembered.

Elizabeth deteriorated rapidly on March 11.

She was hospitalized March 12.

She died March 18.

The removal papers were never filed.

Amelia whispered, “He made Mom believe she was dying.”

David shook his head.

“That alone wouldn’t kill her.”

Richard looked at him.

“What would?”

“Medication.”

Silence.

Elizabeth had received strong sedatives and pain treatment during her final week.

All prescribed by Keller.

Richard stood so quickly his chair fell backward.

Amelia grabbed his arm.

“Dad.”

He stopped.

She had called him Dad.

Neither acknowledged it.

David continued carefully.

“We don’t have proof Keller intentionally harmed her.”

“Yet.”

“No.”

Richard paced.

“If Eleanor killed Elizabeth…”

Amelia finished.

“Then she didn’t start with the fire.”

The pattern extended further back.

Elizabeth discovered financial crimes.

Elizabeth threatened Eleanor’s power.

Elizabeth died.

Amelia inherited future voting rights.

Amelia was targeted.

Lucy’s birth activated the descendant clause.

The guesthouse burned.

Amelia and Lucy vanished.

Evan investigated.

Evan died.

Now Amelia had resurfaced.

Her car was hit.

Richard stopped pacing.

“It all protects the same thing.”

“Control,” Amelia said.

“Control,” Richard agreed.

The next morning, David located Dr. Martin Keller.

He had booked a flight to Switzerland.

Departure was three hours away.

Richard called him.

Keller answered after five rings.

“Richard.”

“You know why I’m calling.”

Silence.

“Eleanor told me you found Amelia.”

“She’s alive.”

“I know.”

“So is Lucy.”

Another silence.

Richard continued.

“Elizabeth’s pathology report was switched.”

Keller breathed heavily.

“I can explain.”

“Explain now.”

“Not on the phone.”

“Where are you?”

Keller gave an address.

A private aviation lounge near the airport.

Richard and David arrived forty minutes later.

Keller looked twenty years older than Richard remembered.

He was trembling.

“You have to protect me.”

Richard sat opposite him.

“From Eleanor?”

Keller nodded.

“You helped her.”

“I was trapped.”

“That seems to be everyone’s favorite explanation.”

Keller lowered his eyes.

“I loved her.”

Richard stared with disgust.

“You falsified my wife’s medical records because you loved Eleanor?”

“No.”

Keller looked up.

“I falsified them because Eleanor had already poisoned Elizabeth.”

Richard stopped breathing.

“What?”

“She gave Elizabeth a compound that mimicked rapid cancer decline. I changed the pathology report so nobody would order tests that exposed it.”

Amelia’s mother had been murdered.

Richard’s voice became almost inaudible.

“Why are you telling me now?”

“Because Eleanor tried to kill me last night.”

Keller pulled back his sleeve.

A bruised injection mark showed on his arm.

“I escaped.”

Richard leaned forward.

“What proof do you have?”

Keller reached into his bag.

A flash drive.

“Everything.”

Richard took it.

Keller grabbed his wrist.

“But there is something you need to know before you open that.”

“What?”

“Eleanor never acted alone.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“I know about Paul.”

Keller shook his head.

“Not Paul.”

Richard waited.

Keller whispered a name.

May you like

And Richard Hale realized the conspiracy reached directly into his own boardroom.

“Samuel Grant.”
