Chapter 4 - A Wedding Surrounded by Ghosts

Adrian and Lily married at a seaside hotel forty miles from Vale House.
Lily had suggested a small ceremony, but the Vale family name turned small events into public occasions. Business partners arrived from several countries. Society reporters gathered outside. The ballroom filled with white roses, crystal lights, and music from a twelve-piece orchestra.
Despite the attention, the ceremony itself felt intimate.
When Lily entered, Adrian forgot the guests.
Her ivory gown was elegant and modest, with long satin sleeves and delicate embroidery across the back. A row of pearl buttons concealed the scar completely.
David Hart walked beside her.
Rachel cried openly from the front row.
Evelyn Vale sat perfectly still.
Thomas watched Lily with an expression that seemed less like suspicion than sorrow.
During the vows, Adrian promised that no secret from the past would be stronger than the life they built together.
At the time, the words seemed romantic.
Hours later, they would sound like a challenge.
At the reception, Lily noticed an elderly woman standing near the ballroom entrance. The stranger wore a gray coat inappropriate for the celebration and held no invitation.
Their eyes met.
The woman stared at Lily’s face, then whispered something that disappeared beneath the music.
Lily moved toward her, but several guests crossed the room.
By the time Lily reached the entrance, the woman was gone.
A hotel employee found an envelope on the floor.
It contained no letter.
Inside was only a damaged newspaper clipping about the Vale House fire.
One sentence had been underlined.
A six-year-old girl remains missing.
Adrian wanted to contact security, but Thomas took the clipping from him.
“This is someone seeking attention,” he said.
Lily studied his face. “You don’t believe that.”
Thomas folded the paper. “Tonight is your wedding. Do not allow a stranger to poison it.”
Evelyn suddenly approached.
“Where did this come from?”
Adrian explained.
Evelyn looked toward the entrance with panic.
“Did you see the woman?”
“Only briefly,” Lily said.
“What did she look like?”
“About seventy. Silver hair. A scar near her chin.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“You know her,” Adrian said.
“No.”
“You’re lying.”
Before he could press further, Evelyn walked away.
Lily touched Adrian’s arm.
“Not tonight.”
He agreed, although anger remained beneath his smile.
After the final dance, the couple traveled upstairs to the honeymoon suite.
For the first time all day, they were alone.
Adrian removed his jacket and sat beside Lily on the bed. The unanswered questions seemed distant beneath the candlelight.
He kissed her gently.
She smiled and rested her forehead against his.
“We survived the wedding,” she whispered.
“Barely.”
Lily laughed.
Then she turned so he could help with the pearl buttons on her gown.
One button opened.
Then another.
The fabric lowered slightly across her upper back.
Adrian saw the scar.

The past entered the room.
Within minutes, the photograph lay on the bed between them, and the marriage they had just begun appeared impossible.
