Chapter 4 - The Son Who Wanted Everything

Tristan Cole had grown up inside the world James created.

He attended private schools, traveled in chauffeured cars, and spent summers at a coastal estate purchased with Northstar profits. By the time he was old enough to understand the company, he believed it was his inheritance.

Richard encouraged that belief.

He told Tristan that Northstar had survived because the Cole family possessed the courage to lead it. James Evans was described only as a talented but unstable engineer who abandoned the company during a personal crisis.

“Some men create things,” Richard once said. “Other men know what to do with them.”

Tristan wanted to become the second kind of man.

He entered Northstar after business school and moved quickly through departments that older, more experienced employees had spent years trying to reach.

Officially, his promotions reflected performance.

In reality, Richard removed anyone who challenged him.

Tristan learned to speak about sacrifice without making any. He stood beside military families at public events, praised wounded veterans, and approved advertisements showing soldiers using Northstar equipment.

He considered admiration proof of character.

Maisie complicated his life because his feelings for her were not entirely false.

He admired her warmth. He liked the way she treated waiters, nurses, drivers, and strangers with the same respect she showed wealthy donors. Around her, he sometimes imagined becoming the person she believed him to be.

But admiration was not enough to change him.

When Richard revealed James’s identity, Tristan’s first emotion was not wonder.

It was fear.

If James returned to Northstar, Tristan would lose his position. If the trust remained valid, the Cole family could lose control of the company. If Maisie learned the truth, she might choose her father over him.

Tristan told himself that he was protecting their future.

He began by encouraging Maisie to distance herself from James.

He suggested a longer honeymoon, a new house across the country, and a position for Maisie at a private clinic near Northstar’s western division.

When those ideas failed, Vivian presented the retirement offer.

Maisie’s angry reaction convinced Tristan that subtle pressure would not be enough.

Then Richard found a clause in the trust.

James’s family protections applied only to documented coercion, threats, or exploitation connected to Northstar. A broken engagement would not automatically trigger intervention.

Richard proposed a public separation that would discredit James before he could speak.

If James appeared unstable or dishonest, the board could challenge any attempt to reclaim control.

Tristan resisted at first.

“Why at the wedding?”

“Because witnesses remember humiliation,” Richard said. “They repeat it. By the time Evans makes any claim, he will be the gardener who invented a fantasy after his daughter was abandoned.”

“That will destroy Maisie.”

“She will recover.”

Tristan walked to the window of his father’s office.

Below, James was planting white flowers around the memorial oak.

For a moment, Tristan felt ashamed.

Then Richard placed a confidential report on the desk.

The report showed an upcoming transfer of Northstar guidance technology through an international subsidiary. The deal would make the Cole family enormously wealthy.

The transfer violated the conditions of the trust.

If James discovered it, everything would collapse.

“The agreement closes two days after the wedding,” Richard said. “We only need him silent until then.”

Tristan stared at the report.

“Does Maisie know anything?”

“We don’t know.”

“She would have told me.”

“Would she?”

That question poisoned him.

Tristan began reinterpreting every conversation. Maisie’s questions about his work seemed suspicious. James’s silences appeared deliberate. Their modest home began to feel like a stage constructed to deceive him.

He searched Maisie’s belongings and found nothing.

He hired someone to enter James’s house while they were away. The locked box in the attic had already been moved.

James had noticed signs of the break-in and transferred the documents to a secure location.

The failure increased Richard’s panic.

They created the wedding plan.

Tristan would stop the ceremony and publicly accuse James of concealing his identity, manipulating Maisie, and attempting to enter the Cole family through marriage.

But when the moment arrived, Tristan could not reveal James as Northstar’s founder without confirming the truth.

So he chose the simplest weapon.

Class.

He would make James seem small.

He would call him a gardener and make Maisie feel that loving her father had cost her a husband.

Tristan practiced the sentence alone.

“I’ll never marry a gardener’s daughter.”

Each time, it sounded powerful.

He imagined the guests whispering about Maisie. He imagined James lowering his head. He imagined Richard stepping forward to guide the room’s interpretation.

What Tristan did not imagine was Maisie standing beside her father.

He did not imagine her saying, “You were always enough.”

And he certainly did not imagine military vehicles arriving before the echo of his insult had faded.

The convoy appeared because James had finally acted.

Three days before the wedding, he discovered a Northstar technician named Daniel Reed sitting behind the equipment shed near the eastern courtyard.

Daniel’s hands were shaking.

He had been dismissed that morning after refusing to approve a security certificate for the international transfer.

James sat beside him without introducing himself.

For twenty minutes, Daniel explained everything.

Restricted designs were being moved through Site Seven. Safety tests had been falsified. The final authorization would occur after the weekend.

James listened.

Then he asked one question.

“Do you have proof?”

Daniel nodded.

James took out an old phone and called a number he had not used in seventeen years.

Commander Lucas Hale answered on the second ring.

James said, “Eight minutes.”

May you like

There was a long silence.

Then Lucas replied, “Where are you, Colonel?”
