Chapter 9 - The Aunt Behind the Portrait

Celeste Vance had spent most of her life being underestimated. She cultivated softness: pale dresses, charitable committees, quiet laughter at powerful men's jokes. While Victor built companies and Preston collected titles, Celeste became the keeper of family rituals. She arranged birthdays, funerals, and reconciliations that never lasted.

No one asked what she heard while people forgot she was in the room.

By morning, she had vanished from the estate.

Clarissa took control of the foundation under temporary court protection. Her first act was not to enter the executive office. It was to reopen the veterans clinic Victor had closed for being unprofitable. Her second was to freeze every transfer connected to Nightingale.

The public praised her. News programs replayed Mercer's salute and Preston's refusal to sign. Commentators who had called her unstable now called her courageous.

Clarissa trusted applause even less than mockery.

Preston recovered in a private military ward. The bullet had damaged muscle but spared the artery. He admitted the shooter was a contractor hired through one of Celeste's charities. He also admitted he had once helped Celeste open accounts in Cyprus without asking why.

"I thought she was hiding money from Dad," he said.

"She was hiding money for someone else."

Margaret obtained a search order for Celeste's townhouse. Behind a portrait of Elias, investigators found a hidden room containing burner phones, passports, and surveillance photographs of Clarissa's deployments. One wall displayed a timeline of Evelyn's known movements.

At the center was a recent photograph of a mountain monastery in northern Italy.

Written beneath it: Sparrow located.

Lena identified Sparrow as Evelyn's emergency code name.

Clarissa wanted to leave immediately, but Mercer warned that international travel would expose her location to Orpheus. Instead, they traced Celeste's last call to a private airfield outside Richmond.

Clarissa, Mercer, and a military arrest team arrived as a jet prepared for departure. Celeste stood at the foot of the stairs wearing cream-colored gloves. She did not run.

"You found the portrait," she said.

Clarissa aimed no weapon. "Did you kill Grandfather?"

Celeste's eyes filled with tears. "I loved him more than Victor ever did."

"That was not my question."

"I entered his room to warn him. Pike had already poisoned the tea. Elias knew. He refused treatment because he believed his death would trigger the archive."

Clarissa's anger sharpened. "You let him die."

"He ordered me to."

Mercer stepped forward. "Who is Orpheus?"

Celeste looked toward the jet. "A name used by different people. A mask passed down whenever the person wearing it becomes inconvenient."

She admitted moving money, tracking Evelyn, and bribing officials. She claimed she did so under Elias's orders to keep Nightingale from finding Evelyn first. The evidence could support either explanation.

"Why hire the shooter at the memorial?" Clarissa asked.

"I hired him to fire into the ceiling and force evacuation. I did not tell him to shoot Preston. Someone changed the order."

Celeste removed one glove. A tiny transmitter was taped to her palm.

"They are listening now," she said.

A red dot appeared on her chest.

Clarissa tackled her as a sniper round shattered the jet window. Mercer ordered the team to cover. A second round struck the runway. The sniper escaped before helicopters sealed the area.

Celeste survived with a broken wrist. In custody, she gave Clarissa the location of an emergency courier who could contact Evelyn.

"Why should I believe you?" Clarissa asked.

Celeste leaned close. "Because your mother sent the warning at St. Catherine's. She has been watching you since the funeral."

Clarissa remembered the photograph of the tunnel, taken seconds after she entered.

"Why would she not come to me?"

"Because she does not know whether you are still her daughter," Celeste said, "or whether Aster changed you before you were old enough to remember."

That evening, Clarissa opened the missing section of Elias's medical file.

Her own childhood blood tests had been removed.

In their place was a single note written by Evelyn.

Clarissa was exposed at age six.\n\nInvestigators also found dozens of unopened letters in Celeste's hidden room, each addressed to Clarissa in Evelyn's handwriting. Some were birthday messages. Some described places Evelyn had watched from a distance: Clarissa's graduation, her commissioning, her return from Afghanistan. None had been mailed. Celeste claimed Elias forbade delivery because each letter carried location traces. Clarissa read only one. Evelyn had written, I saw you salute the families before you treated the wounded. You remembered that grief has rank over all of us. Clarissa folded the page without deciding whether it comforted her or deepened the wound.
