Chapter 13 - The Airfield Bargain

The abandoned military airfield lay beyond the northern industrial district, hidden behind warehouses and a collapsed perimeter fence. Pierce had chosen it because Raven Authority once used the underground hangars for covert evacuations.
Marcus agreed to come only after Valerie threatened to release evidence of his survival to every major news organization. Cole was brought in restraints. Ward carried the Raven List inside a weatherproof case. Hale came without insignia.
Daniel insisted on joining them.
"Pierce wants me," he said. "He will not trade Vanessa if I stay behind."
Claire, released after loyal officers regained control of the hospital, stood beside him. Their reunion remained unresolved. There was no time to repair two years of grief in a hallway, and neither pretended otherwise.
At the airfield, runway lights flickered on beneath heavy rain.
Pierce waited beside a transport plane with Vanessa bound in a wheelchair. Armed men surrounded the hangar. Several frightened teenagers stood behind them, each wearing a numbered gray jacket.
Active Raven subjects.
"Those are children from the missing pages," Ward said.
Pierce smiled. "They are assets whose governments will pay to recover them."
Marcus looked at the children with cold fury. "You misunderstand Raven."
"No," Pierce replied. "I understand it better than you. Ideology is expensive. Hostages are profitable."
He demanded the Raven List, Marcus, and Daniel. In return, he would release Vanessa and the teenagers.
Cole laughed. "He will kill everyone once the plane leaves."
Pierce shot him in the leg.
Chaos nearly erupted, but Valerie raised one hand. "We make the trade."
Daniel stared at her. She met his eyes and tapped two fingers against her wrist, an old Raven Twelve signal meaning wait for the third movement.
Ward carried the case forward. Marcus walked beside him. Daniel followed.
First movement: Pierce's men released three teenagers.
Second movement: Vanessa's wheelchair rolled across the painted line.
Third movement never came.
The runway lights went dark.
Claire had reached the control room through a maintenance tunnel and cut power. Hale's loyal officers breached the perimeter. Ward dropped the case and tackled Pierce. Valerie pulled Daniel behind an engine block as gunfire tore through the rain.
Marcus moved not toward safety, but toward the teenagers. He shielded them with his own body and guided them into the hangar trench.
Valerie saw Pierce draw a backup pistol at Ward. She fired first, striking Pierce's shoulder.
Daniel reached Vanessa and cut her restraints.
The transport plane began moving without lights. One of Pierce's pilots had started the engines and intended to escape with several children still aboard.
Claire drove an airport tug directly into the plane's path. The pilot swerved, clipped a fuel vehicle, and spun across the runway. Valerie boarded through the rear ramp before it closed. Inside, she fought two guards while the plane rolled toward the fence.
Daniel followed despite her order to stay back.
Together they freed the children and forced the cockpit door open. The pilot abandoned the controls. Daniel pulled the emergency brake as the plane tore through the fence and stopped inches from a drainage ravine.
Outside, Pierce was captured alive.
Vanessa embraced Daniel for the first time without claiming him, apologizing, or asking forgiveness. She simply held him while he allowed it.
Ward opened the weatherproof case.
The Raven List was gone.
In its place lay a handwritten letter from Arthur Whitmore.
I could not let Marcus, Cole, or the government decide what truth the children deserve. I have taken the list to the only person Elena trusted more than herself.
Valerie read the final line twice.
Find Sister Miriam at Saint Orla's Home.
Hale looked stricken.
"Saint Orla's burned down twenty-eight years ago," he said.
Marcus shook his head.
"The building burned," he replied. "Sister Miriam did not."
During the airfield battle, the teenagers revealed that Pierce had told each of them their families had sold them. He used forged messages and edited recordings to make rescue appear impossible. Claire gathered their phones and showed them the contradictions in the timestamps. The method echoed Cole's oldest tactic: isolate the target by making every relationship uncertain.

Vanessa, still weak from surgery, helped calm a girl who refused to leave the transport plane. She admitted that adults had lied to both of them and promised not to demand trust. She simply sat nearby until the girl chose to move. Daniel saw in that small act the mother Vanessa might still become when control was no longer confused with love.
Pierce, once captured, told Valerie that Aster had approved the airfield operation. He described Aster not as a commander but as a protocol that could speak through any authorized director. Yet when Valerie asked whose voice he heard, Pierce smiled and said, "A woman who knew your childhood name."
