THE SAFE WAS ALREADY OPEN / Chapter 4 / 10

Chapter 4 - What Adrian Hid

The police entered Mara’s apartment at one-thirty-seven in the afternoon.

Detective Lena Ortiz arrived with them, even though the case had not officially been assigned to her. She wore dark trousers, a plain jacket, and the expression Mara remembered from the day Lena had awakened after surgery and immediately asked who had moved her service weapon.

“Take Brooke to the hallway,” Lena told one officer.

Brooke refused to release Mara’s hand.

“I’m staying with Mommy.”

Mara crouched.

“Officer Chen is going to take you to Mrs. Dalca’s apartment next door. I’ll come as soon as I finish talking to the police.”

“Are Grandma and Grandpa going to jail?”

The question silenced the room.

Mara looked toward her parents.

Howard stood beside the open safe with his hands raised. Celeste had begun crying. Evelyn sat on the edge of the overturned chair, staring at the forged document on the bed.

“I don’t know yet,” Mara said.

“Did they steal our house?”

“No one is taking our house.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

Brooke pressed Mr. Buttons against Mara’s chest, then followed Officer Chen into the hallway.

Once she was gone, Howard lowered his hands.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

Lena turned toward him.

“You removed a child from school using a fraudulent authorization, entered a private residence, disabled security cameras, searched the property, and possessed a forged deed. Which part did I misunderstand?”

“I am Dr. Ellison’s father.”

“That is not a legal defense.”

“This is a family financial matter.”

“The county recorder may call it attempted property fraud.”

Howard looked at Mara.

“Tell them we had permission.”

“No.”

“You gave Celeste a key.”

“I gave Celeste a key three years ago for emergencies. I asked her to return it.”

“I forgot,” Celeste said.

“You used it today after helping Mom impersonate me to Brooke’s school.”

“I didn’t know Mom was going to do that.”

Evelyn looked up.

“You wrote the email.”

“I wrote what Dad told me to write. You made the phone call.”

Howard struck the bed with his palm.

“Stop talking.”

Every officer in the room turned toward him.

Howard seemed to realize his mistake.

Lena stepped closer.

“Keep your hands where I can see them.”

Mara picked up the forged deed using a tissue and placed it inside a clear evidence sleeve supplied by an officer.

“There was another document,” she said.

Howard’s gaze moved toward the blue folder Celeste had dropped.

“What document?” Lena asked.

“I don’t know yet.”

Mara opened the folder.

Inside were copies of bank correspondence, development contracts, and a handwritten list of numbers. At the bottom was a photograph of Adrian standing beside Howard at the opening of St. Catherine’s rehabilitation center.

Someone had drawn a black circle around Adrian’s face.

On the back, four words had been written.

He kept the original.

Mara showed it to Lena.

“What original?” Lena asked.

No one answered.

Lena faced Celeste.

“You appear to be the only person here interested in reducing your responsibility. This is your chance.”

Celeste wiped her face.

“Dad said Adrian kept a ledger.”

Howard closed his eyes.

“A ledger of what?”

“Payments. Contracts. Companies.”

“Connected to Ellison Development?”

“And the hospital.”

Mara felt the room tilt slightly.

“What was in it?”

“I never saw it. Dad said Adrian copied everything before he died.”

Howard spoke through clenched teeth.

“Celeste is upset and confused.”

“No,” Celeste said. “I’m finally terrified enough to tell the truth.”

Evelyn stood.

“You think betraying your father will save you?”

“I think he already decided to sacrifice us.”

Howard moved toward Celeste.

Two officers blocked him.

Lena pointed to the chair.

“Sit down.”

Howard obeyed.

Mara looked inside the open safe.

It was not completely empty.

A pale rectangle on the bottom shelf showed where something had rested for years. Dust surrounded the outline of a large book or document case.

Near the rear wall lay a small piece of torn black fabric.

Lena photographed it.

“Do you recognize this?”

Mara shook her head.

Marcus, the security technician, arrived after the scene was secured. He examined the safe without touching the interior.

“The audit memory should tell us when it opened.”

“Can you access it now?” Lena asked.

“With the door open, yes.”

He connected a diagnostic cable to a hidden port beneath the keypad.

The laptop displayed a list of dates.

Most entries were failed attempts.

Three occurred during the previous month.

One occurred the night the false maintenance worker entered.

The most recent entry appeared at 11:58 that morning.

Successful opening.

“What code was used?” Mara asked.

Marcus opened the details.

“Not a code. Master authentication.”

“Whose?”

“The system doesn’t list a name. It gives an authorization key.”

He copied the string of letters and numbers.

Lena photographed it.

“Can we trace that?”

“To the company that built the safe.”

“Which company?”

Marcus opened the manufacturing record.

The name on the screen was Meridian Secure Systems.

Mara knew the name.

Meridian was also the parent company of the private investment group that had funded St. Catherine’s rehabilitation center.

Howard’s face changed when he saw it.

Lena noticed.

“You recognize the company?”

“No.”

“You looked like you did.”

“I’ve worked with hundreds of companies.”

Marcus scrolled further.

“The safe wasn’t purchased by Dr. Ellison’s husband.”

Mara turned toward him.

“What?”

“The original customer was St. Catherine Medical Center.”

The bedroom became silent again.

“That doesn’t make sense,” Mara said. “Why would the hospital install a commercial safe in our home?”

“According to this, the unit was assigned to an employee under the hospital’s confidential records program.”

“Adrian?”

Marcus examined the registration number.

“No.”

He looked at Mara.

“The assigned employee was Dr. Samuel Voss.”

Mara knew Samuel Voss well.

Everyone at St. Catherine did.

He was the chairman of the hospital’s executive board.

He had delivered the eulogy at Adrian’s funeral.
