CHAPTER 5: TWO MOTHERS, ONE BROKEN HEART

Finding the truth did not make everything simple.
Ethan had two names now.
Ethan, the name he had grown up with.
Elias, the name Mara had whispered over him as a newborn.
He had two mothers too.
One who had searched for him.
One who had raised him through a lie.
The world wanted him to choose.
Reporters shouted questions at the gates. Strangers online argued about his life as if he were a character in a movie. Some said Mara should take him away immediately. Others said Victoria was still his real mother because she had raised him.
Ethan hated all of it.
He was not a headline.
He was a boy whose birthday had turned into a nightmare.
Nathan hired a child therapist. The therapist told the adults the same thing again and again.
“Do not make Ethan carry adult guilt. Do not force him to choose love like a courtroom verdict.”
So Mara moved slowly.
She visited Ethan often, but she never demanded to be called Mom. She brought photos, stories, and small pieces of the life that had waited for him.
She told him about her father, who used to sing badly while driving a bus.
She told him about the yellow crib she had painted.
She told him about the chocolate cakes she baked every birthday.
Ethan listened.
Sometimes he asked questions.
Sometimes he said nothing.
Sometimes he cried without knowing why.
Nathan struggled too.
One night, Ethan found him alone in the dark study.
“Dad?”
Nathan quickly wiped his face.
“Hey. I thought you were asleep.”
“Are you crying?”
Nathan tried to smile.
“A little.”
“Because of me?”
Nathan turned sharply.
“No. Never because of you.”
Ethan sat beside him.
“Because you didn’t know?”
Nathan closed his eyes.
“I keep thinking about the hospital. I keep wondering what I missed.”
“You didn’t steal me,” Ethan said.
“No,” Nathan whispered. “But I didn’t protect you from the lie.”
“You didn’t know.”
Nathan pulled him close.
“I wish that made it easier.”
Ethan leaned against him.
“If Mara is my mom, are you still my dad?”
Nathan’s voice broke.
“Always.”
“Can I love both of you?”
Nathan hugged him tighter.
“Yes. You can love as many people as your heart needs.”
Ethan hesitated.
“Can I still feel sad about Victoria?”
Nathan struggled with the answer.
Then he said, “Yes. What she did was wrong. But your memories are still yours. No one gets to tell you what you are allowed to feel.”
That became the beginning of healing.
Mara did not try to erase Victoria.
Nathan did not try to erase Mara.

They both tried to protect Ethan from being split in half.
For the first time, the adults around him chose truth over pride.
