Chapter 10 - The Replacement Already Began

Priya checked the federal identity system.

Mara Hale had been declared dead forty-three minutes earlier.

According to official records, she had suffered fatal injuries during the attack at Pier 19.

A body had been identified through dental records.

A death certificate had already been issued.

At the same time, a woman named Marissa Vale had entered the United States using one of the passports found in Mara’s hidden case.

Her photograph was identical to Mara’s.

The replacement process had begun before they reached Saint Orison.

Victor had not needed to capture Mara.

He only needed to erase her legally.

“If I’m dead,” Mara said, “who controls Daniel’s trust?”

Priya searched the legal filings.

A petition had been submitted by Victor’s attorneys.

Daniel Hale was alive but mentally incapacitated.

Mara Hale was deceased.

The nearest eligible guardian was Victor Hale.

A judge had scheduled an emergency transfer hearing for the following morning.

Evelyn understood the plan.

Victor had allowed them to find Daniel.

He wanted Daniel’s survival confirmed.

Then he erased Mara and positioned himself as guardian.

Everything that appeared to weaken him had advanced his final claim.

“Where is the hearing?” Evelyn asked.

“Washington.”

“Victor will be there.”

Reed’s voice came through the radio.

“We need to leave now.”

The underground harbor shook again.

Freed prisoners had seized one of the control towers, but Celeste’s guards were sealing lower levels.

Water began pouring through emergency channels.

Celeste looked toward the ceiling.

“They’re flooding the port.”

“Your own people?” Mara asked.

“They would rather drown Saint Orison than lose Archive Zero.”

Evelyn faced the terminal.

She had to choose.

Transfer would grant her control over the facility, perhaps enough to open the gates.

Erase would destroy the evidence.

Reveal would expose everyone.

Then Daniel placed his hand over hers.

“There’s another option.”

He pointed to the small wheel beside the disk slot.

It was not a command selector.

It was a physical lock.

Evelyn inserted the black remote and turned it.

The terminal displayed a hidden line.

SUSPEND.

The command froze financial systems, security networks, identity records, and communication channels across Crown Nine for seventy-two hours.

It would not destroy the organization.

But it would make every hidden member vulnerable.

Evelyn selected it.

Across the underground city, lights changed from red to white.

The harbor gates began opening.

Archive Zero copied a limited index of names and locations onto the remote.

Not enough to expose victims.

Enough to identify the hunters.

Celeste stared at the terminal.

“No Hale heir has ever chosen suspension.”

“That is because you trained them to choose power.”

The first naval vessel entered the harbor.

Federal teams poured onto the docks.

Celeste attempted to flee, but Daniel blocked her.

For eleven years, she had controlled every step he took.

Now he simply stood between her and the door.

She looked almost offended.

“You owe your life to me.”

Daniel’s voice was quiet.

“No. I survived you.”

Celeste was taken into custody.

Thousands of documents and servers were secured.

More than two hundred prisoners were rescued.

The world would later call Saint Orison the greatest human-rights crime discovered in modern American history.

But Evelyn had no time to celebrate.

Victor’s hearing began in nine hours.

Reed arranged emergency transport by military aircraft.

During the flight, Daniel slept with his head against the window.

Mara sat beside Evelyn.

“What happens when the seventy-two hours end?”

“Crown Nine’s systems return.”

“Can we stop them before then?”

“We can arrest the names on the index.”

“All of them?”

Evelyn looked at the remote.

Eight hundred and twelve names had appeared.

Judges.

Doctors.

Executives.

Generals.

Agents.

Journalists.

Members of royal families.

No government could arrest them all in three days.

Some would disappear.

Some would destroy evidence.

Some would turn on each other.

And some were probably already aboard the aircraft.

Evelyn looked around the cabin.

Reed sat near the cockpit.

Priya worked on a laptop.

Four military officers guarded Celeste.

Daniel slept.

Mara watched the clouds.

One of the guards quietly touched a broken crown tattoo beneath his collar.

Evelyn saw it.

He saw her see it.

The guard drew his weapon.

Evelyn pressed the fourth button.

Nothing happened.

The remote’s electronic pulse had been disabled.

The guard smiled.

Then Daniel opened his eyes.

He had never been asleep.

He struck the man’s arm as the gun fired.

The bullet tore through the aircraft window.

The cabin depressurized.

May you like

Alarms screamed.

The plane began descending rapidly toward the ocean.
