Chapter 11 - The Person in the Hallway

They ran through the dark.

Margaret knew the building better than Laura expected.

She pulled her into a side corridor.

“Where are we going?”

“There's another exit.”

“Who is following us?”

“I don't know.”

“You're lying again.”

Margaret stopped.

“I don't know which person it is.”

Laura stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

Margaret whispered, “Your father left evidence that could destroy several people.”

“Elliot?”

“Yes.”

“Daniel?”

Margaret hesitated.

“Maybe.”

Laura's heart sank.

“What about you?”

Margaret looked away.

“I made mistakes.”

Before Laura could ask more, footsteps echoed behind them.

They moved faster.

A door appeared ahead.

Margaret opened it.

They entered a storage room.

Margaret shut the door.

The footsteps passed.

Laura whispered, “We need the police.”

“Not yet.”

“Why?”

“Because someone inside the police department may be involved.”

Laura stared.

“You can't expect me to believe that.”

“I don't expect you to believe anything.”

Margaret reached into her coat.

She removed a small memory card.

“This is what they wanted.”

Laura stared.

“What is it?”

“The missing piece.”

“Missing piece of what?”

“The ownership records.”

Laura frowned.

Margaret continued.

“Your father discovered that someone had been transferring property rights through forged documents.”

“Why my house?”

“Because your house sits on land that used to belong to a larger estate.”

“And?”

Margaret lowered her voice.

“Beneath that land is something your father found.”

Laura remembered the message.

Your father hid the truth under your kitchen floor.

“What did he find?”

“I don't know.”

“Then who does?”

Margaret looked at her.

“Daniel.”

Laura froze.

Again.

“Why does everyone keep saying Daniel knows everything?”

“Because he was there when your father made the discovery.”

“And you?”

“I arrived afterward.”

Laura's phone vibrated.

A new message.

Look behind you.

Laura slowly turned.

A security camera in the corner was pointed directly at them.

Its red light was blinking.

Margaret whispered, “We're being watched.”

The speaker above them suddenly crackled.

A man's voice filled the room.

“Hello, Laura.”

Laura froze.

The voice continued.

“You've spent two days looking for the truth.”

May you like

A pause.

“Tomorrow, you'll finally find it.”
