Chapter 15 - the door beneath pier 14

Federal investigators advised Claire to remain at the estate.

She went to Pier 14.

Nolan drove. Maya sat beside him, reviewing maps of the underground freight tunnels. Evelyn remained at Hartwell under police protection, but she had placed Alexander’s brass key around Claire’s neck before she left.

“Bring Daniel home,” she had said.

The pier was abandoned when they arrived.

Rain moved across the river, hiding the city lights behind gray mist. Rusted warehouses stood along the water. The Hartwell property records identified Warehouse 6 as the entrance to the old tunnel system.

The building was locked.

Claire used the brass key.

It fit.

Inside, the warehouse was empty except for a freight elevator and a single chair beneath a hanging light.

On the chair lay a black envelope.

Nolan checked the room for explosives and listening devices.

Maya opened the envelope with gloved hands.

Inside was a photograph of Daniel.

He stood beside a concrete wall holding a newspaper dated two days earlier.

Alive.

On the back, someone had written:

One heir entered.

Two heirs leave.

Claire read the sentence again.

“Two heirs?”

Nolan moved toward the freight elevator.

“The controls are active.”

Claire examined the photograph.

Daniel’s right hand was visible near the newspaper. His index finger pointed toward one word in the headline.

Below.

“He wants us to go down,” she said.

“Or someone wants us to think he does,” Maya replied.

Nolan pressed the elevator button.

The doors opened.

A steel platform descended into darkness.

They entered.

The elevator traveled far below the river level. Water dripped behind the concrete walls. After nearly a minute, the platform stopped.

A red corridor stretched ahead.

Security cameras turned toward Claire as she stepped out.

A speaker clicked on.

“Welcome home, Miss Hartwell.”

The voice belonged to the man who had called from her bedroom.

“Where is Daniel?” Claire asked.

“Behind the final door.”

Lights appeared one by one along the corridor.

Each illuminated a framed photograph.

Alexander and Julian as young men.

Evelyn holding baby Daniel.

Daniel standing beside Graham.

Claire’s mother entering a black car.

Arthur meeting an unknown man.

Helena receiving a package.

The final photograph showed Claire at the gala, kneeling beside Evelyn.

Every important moment in the Hartwell family’s history had been observed.

Recorded.

Controlled.

Maya examined the nearest frame.

“These photographs cover more than forty years.”

Nolan spoke into his radio.

“Federal team, confirm position.”

Only static answered.

Their communication had been blocked.

The speaker came alive again.

“Officer Reed, place your weapon on the floor.”

Nolan did not move.

A screen illuminated at the end of the corridor.

Daniel appeared on it, tied to a chair but conscious.

A man stood behind him holding a small remote.

Only the man’s hand was visible.

The Hartwell crest ring gleamed on his finger.

“Father,” Claire whispered.

Daniel raised his head.

His eyes found the camera.

“Claire, do not open the door.”

The speaker answered him.

“You have spent sixteen years waiting to meet your daughter. Do not ruin the moment.”

Claire walked toward the screen.

“Julian.”

A quiet laugh filled the corridor.

“Evelyn told you about me.”

“Show yourself.”

“In time.”

“What do you want?”

“What Alexander stole.”

“The estate?”

“The estate was never the true inheritance.”

A door appeared beneath the screen. It had no handle, only a brass keyhole.

Claire touched the key around her neck.

Daniel struggled against the restraints.

“Claire, listen to me. The key does not release me.”

“Then what does it open?”

Daniel’s face filled with panic.

“It opens the room Alexander buried beneath Hartwell before you were born.”

Julian’s voice interrupted.

“And inside that room is the reason your grandfather chose you over his own son.”

Claire stopped before the door.

Nolan raised his weapon toward the camera.

“Federal agents are on the way.”

“No,” Julian replied. “They are following Graham’s instructions to the wrong tunnel.”

Maya looked back toward the elevator.

The doors had closed.

A heavy lock engaged behind them.

Claire held the brass key.

“What happens if I refuse?”

The screen changed.

A second room appeared beside Daniel’s.

Someone sat in the shadows.

A woman.

Her face was hidden, but she wore a silver necklace Claire recognized immediately.

It had belonged to her mother.

Claire’s voice broke.

“My mother died in the river.”

The woman lifted her head slightly.

Julian spoke with quiet satisfaction.

“Did she?”

The shadowed woman moved toward the light.

Before her face could be seen, every screen went black.

The final door unlocked.

Daniel shouted from the darkness.

“Claire, whatever you hear next, do not believe her.”

Then a woman’s voice came from the other side of the door.

The same voice Claire remembered singing beside her childhood bed.

“Little sparrow,” it whispered. “Your father has lied to you your entire life.”
