Chapter 9 - The Service Wing

Daniel struck the door with his shoulder.

It did not move.

“Open it!”

Inside, Lily began crying.

Margaret’s voice remained calm.

“Daniel, return to the party.”

Security officer Marcus Cole arrived with a pry bar.

The lock broke after two attempts.

Daniel entered.

The room had once been used by household staff. Three uniforms were laid across a bench.

Noah stood in front of his sisters.

Margaret gripped his shoulder.

A man Daniel did not recognize held a camera.

“What is this?” Daniel demanded.

Margaret released Noah.

“A rehearsal.”

“For what?”

Richard entered through the opposite doorway with Dr. Grae behind him.

“For accountability,” Richard said.

Daniel looked at the camera.

“You were filming them.”

Dr. Grae stepped forward.

“The children were being asked to perform simple age-appropriate tasks.”

“After being taken from their security officer?”

Margaret frowned.

“What happened to the woman outside is not our responsibility.”

“She was struck.”

Richard glanced toward the cameraman.

“Stop recording.”

Daniel stepped between them and the children.

“No. Keep recording.”

The cameraman hesitated.

Daniel looked at Noah.

“Did anyone hurt you?”

“No.”

“Did anyone threaten you?”

Noah’s eyes moved toward Richard.

“Grandpa said if we did not help, he would tell the court you were sick.”

The room went silent.

Dr. Grae cleared his throat.

“Children often misunderstand adult conversations.”

Sophie pointed at him.

“He said we might have to live here.”

Daniel faced the therapist.

“You disclosed private medical information to my parents.”

“I did no such thing.”

Rachel entered with two security officers.

“We have a copy of the guardianship petition,” she said. “Your signed statement is attached.”

Dr. Grae’s face changed.

Richard raised one hand.

“This is neither the time nor place.”

“It is exactly the place,” Daniel said. “Because you built this entire event to create evidence against me.”

Margaret laughed softly.

“You are proving our point by behaving irrationally.”

Daniel turned to the children.

“Go with Rachel.”

Margaret blocked Sophie.

“They need to remain.”

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“Move.”

Something in his expression made her step aside.

Rachel led the children away.

Daniel looked at Marcus.

“Secure this room. Preserve the camera and all recordings.”

The cameraman protested.

“That is private property.”

Rachel turned back.

“It may be evidence in an attempted fraudulent custody proceeding and the assault of a security officer. You may wait for police to determine ownership.”

The man released the camera.

Richard’s face reddened.

“You will regret this.”

Daniel walked toward him.

“No. I regret everything I allowed before today.”

Outside, guests had begun gathering near the terrace.

Rumors moved quickly through the crowd.

Elena had regained consciousness and was being examined by a paramedic. She remembered someone pulling her backward but had not seen the attacker.

Daniel wanted to remove the children immediately.

Then Caroline arrived.

She entered through the garden gate carrying a brown leather case.

Her hair was wet from the rain.

Richard saw her from across the lawn.

For the first time that day, he looked afraid.

“Caroline,” he said.

She stopped.

Margaret whispered something to Dr. Grae.

He slipped away toward the parking area.

Daniel signaled to security.

“Do not let Grae leave.”

Two officers moved after him.

Caroline approached Daniel.

“I brought everything.”

Richard stepped down from the terrace.

“She is a thief.”

Caroline flinched.

“You ordered every transfer.”

“You forged my authorization.”

“You threatened my family.”

The guests became quiet.

Richard looked around and seemed to remember the audience.

He adjusted his jacket.

“This is an internal financial dispute.”

Caroline opened the case.

“It stopped being internal when Emily died.”

Margaret moved toward her.

“You should not say another word.”

Caroline held up an envelope.

“This contains the final trust review.”

Daniel recognized his late wife’s handwriting across the front.

Caroline turned to him.

“The review requires one final observation.”

“What observation?”

“How your parents treat the children when they believe no one with authority is watching.”

Richard laughed.

“This is absurd.”

Caroline looked toward the service wing.

“The cameras were active.”

Daniel stared at her.

“What cameras?”

“Emily installed them four years ago.”

Richard’s face drained of color.

Caroline removed a small electronic device from her case.

“The trust owns the property. The trust owns the security system. Your father never had access to the hidden archive.”

She pressed a button.

A large screen near the musicians’ platform flickered to life.

The first recording showed Margaret meeting the children near the activity tent.

She told them Daniel had agreed they would work.

The second showed Richard directing a staff member to lure Daniel into the kitchen.

The third showed a masked person striking Elena from behind.

The person removed the mask.

Several guests gasped.

It was Thomas, the family driver.

Richard turned toward the gate.

Thomas was already running.

Security officers chased him.

The screen changed again.

This footage had been recorded earlier that morning.

Richard stood in the empty service wing speaking to Dr. Grae.

“Once Daniel becomes angry, you declare him unstable. We keep the children overnight. By Monday, the emergency petition will be filed.”

Dr. Grae’s voice came through clearly.

“And if he refuses to leave?”

Richard answered without hesitation.

“Then we have him removed from his own property.”

The recording ended.

No one spoke.

Daniel looked at his father.

“You knew the estate belonged to them.”

Richard’s mouth tightened.

“It belongs to the Bennett family.”

“It belongs to Noah, Sophie, and Lily.”

“They are children.”

“Yes.”

“They cannot manage property.”

“No. But apparently they can expose criminals.”

Sirens sounded beyond the gate.

Richard looked toward the driveway.

Caroline leaned closer to Daniel.

“The cameras captured more than today.”

“What else?”

“Your father used the service wing for private meetings.”

“About the trust?”

“About Blackthorne.”

“And Emily?”

May you like

Caroline’s eyes filled with fear.

“One recording was made the night before she died.”
