CHAPTER 6: THE LAST LIE

Vanessa did not cry after that.

She became calm.

Too calm.

She smoothed her dress, lifted her chin, and looked around the room as if the guests were an audience.

“You all want a villain,” she said. “Fine. Make me one. But ask Daniel why he was never here. Ask him why a child was easier to hand to servants than to raise. Ask Elias why his pride destroyed this family long before I arrived.”

Her words struck the room like stones.

Daniel flinched.

Elias lowered his gaze.

Vanessa saw the effect and pushed harder.

“Noah is not the only victim here. I entered a broken house. I tried to build order. I tried to make Daniel strong again.”

Noah’s voice was small but clear.

“You made me scared.”

Vanessa looked at him.

For the first time that night, everyone saw the truth in her eyes. Not regret. Not love. Only irritation that the boy had ruined her plan.

“You were always in the way,” she said.

The room fell silent.

Daniel moved protectively in front of Noah.

Vanessa seemed to realize she had said too much.

She turned toward the stairs.

“I’m leaving.”

Elias’s driver stepped into her path.

“Your room will be packed under supervision,” Elias said. “You will leave after the attorney arrives.”

Vanessa laughed coldly.

“You think I have nothing left?”

She reached into her purse and pulled out her phone.

“I have messages. Private documents. Things Daniel would not want seen.”

Daniel looked at her with tired eyes.

“Do what you want.”

She hesitated.

It was not the answer she expected.

“You would let me ruin you?”

Daniel looked at Noah.

“I already ruined what mattered by not listening to my son. Nothing you reveal can be worse than that.”

For the first time, Vanessa had no response.

The guests began to leave quietly, ashamed to have watched so much and done nothing. One woman stopped near Noah and whispered, “I’m sorry.” Another avoided his eyes.

Mrs. Alvarez remained by the fireplace.

The attorney arrived within the hour, a serious woman named Claire Bennett. She spoke with Daniel, Elias, and Mrs. Alvarez in the study. Noah did not hear everything, but he heard enough.

Vanessa would leave the house that night.

Daniel would file for separation.

The accounts would be investigated.

The staff would be interviewed.

And Noah would never be left alone with Vanessa again.

When Vanessa finally came downstairs with two suitcases, she looked smaller, but not softer.

She stopped near Noah.

For one second, Daniel stepped forward, but Noah lifted his hand.

He wanted to speak for himself.

Vanessa looked down at him.

“Well?” she said. “Are you happy now?”

Noah swallowed.

His voice was quiet.

“No.”

That seemed to surprise her.

“I’m not happy you’re leaving,” he said. “I’m happy I don’t have to be afraid when I hear your footsteps anymore.”

Vanessa’s face changed.

Not with guilt.

With defeat.

She turned and walked out into the rain.

The same rain Noah had stood in.

May you like

But this time, the door closed behind her.

And nobody opened it again.
