Chapter 9 - The Baby Shower Trap

The Grand Aurelia ballroom opened at one in the afternoon.

White roses covered the tables. Gold ribbons hung from the chandeliers. A string quartet played near the marble staircase while guests admired towers of gifts arranged around the stage.

Clara entered in her teal gown at one twenty.

Every camera turned toward her.

She moved slowly, smiling when expected, speaking calmly to donors, board members, relatives, and family friends. Beneath the fabric at her waist, a small transmitter sent her location and vital signs to Reyes’s command team.

The sapphire necklace remained inside its box.

Beatrice noticed immediately.

“Why aren’t you wearing it?”

“The clasp was damaged.”

Beatrice’s eyes moved toward Julian.

He concealed his frustration with a smile.

At one thirty-five, Chloe entered through the west doors.

She wore the gold dress Julian had selected and carried the expression of a woman approaching a courtroom.

Several guests recognized her. Whispers spread.

Julian greeted her too warmly.

Clara watched Arthur enter alone five minutes later.

His face was gray with exhaustion.

He approached Clara near the gift table.

“I told you to leave,” he said.

“And I told you I wanted the truth.”

“Marianne will not come inside.”

“Her people will.”

Arthur looked toward the doors.

“The trustees have already signed preliminary documents.”

“Documents giving Julian temporary control?”

“Yes.”

“Do they know the trust legally belongs to me?”

“No.”

“They will soon.”

Arthur lowered his voice.

“The silver case was not meant for Marianne.”

“Who was it meant for?”

“You.”

Clara studied him.

“Then why did she know where it was?”

“Because someone inside the FBI told her.”

Clara’s gaze moved across the ballroom.

Reyes was not yet visible. Agents remained disguised as hotel staff and guests.

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

At one forty-eight, Julian tapped a spoon against his glass.

The quartet stopped playing.

“Thank you all for joining us,” he began. “Today should have been a celebration of family.”

Clara almost admired the ease with which he performed sadness.

“Unfortunately,” Julian continued, “I have learned information that makes celebration impossible.”

A screen descended behind him.

Photographs appeared showing Clara beside Agent Briggs years earlier. The dates had been removed. The images were arranged to suggest intimacy.

Guests murmured.

Julian turned toward Clara.

“My wife has deceived me.”

Chloe closed her eyes briefly.

Julian displayed the falsified genetic report.

“The child Clara carries is not mine.”

Beatrice covered her mouth with practiced horror.

Arthur remained still.

Julian held out a hand toward Chloe.

“But there is another child. A true Vance heir.”

Chloe did not move.

Julian’s smile tightened.

“Chloe?”

She stepped toward the center of the ballroom.

Then she looked directly at the trustees.

“Julian asked me to lie.”

Silence spread through the room.

Julian’s face hardened.

“Be careful.”

“He altered Clara’s records,” Chloe continued. “He gave me documents designed to take my baby if I refused to cooperate.”

Julian reached for her arm.

Clara stepped between them.

“Do not touch her.”

A flash of anger crossed his face.

“You think this changes anything?”

Clara turned toward the screen.

The falsified report disappeared.

In its place appeared authenticated hospital records, transaction logs from Halcyon, and a recording transcript showing Julian’s instructions to remove Clara from the venue.

The trustees began speaking over one another.

Arthur stared at the screen.

“You accessed the server,” Julian said.

“Yes.”

“You don’t understand what you opened.”

“I understand enough.”

At one fifty-seven, two men wearing medical uniforms entered through the east corridor.

Federal agents intercepted them before they reached the ballroom. One man surrendered immediately. The other ran, leaving the east entrance briefly unsecured.

Reyes’s voice entered Clara’s earpiece.

“Medical team contained. Unidentified woman approaching service elevator.”

Marianne.

Clara looked toward the corridor but Julian blocked her path.

He lowered his voice.

“You think the FBI can protect you?”

“They’re not here only for me.”

“They have nothing.”

“The recordings. The transfers. The altered records. Chloe’s testimony.”

“My father will take responsibility.”

Arthur heard him.

Something inside the older man finally broke.

“No,” Arthur said.

Julian looked at him.

Arthur stepped onto the stage.

“For twenty-four years, I protected this family by sacrificing everyone outside it. Today, I will not sacrifice another person for my son.”

Beatrice stared at her husband.

“Arthur, stop.”

He looked at the trustees.

“The original Vance trust belongs to Helena Mercer’s descendant. Clara is that descendant. Julian married her to gain access to it.”

Guests erupted in shock.

Julian’s expression turned dangerous.

“You’re confused, Father.”

“I am guilty,” Arthur said. “But I am not confused.”

The ballroom clock moved toward two.

Reyes spoke through Clara’s earpiece.

“Agents in position. We need Julian to confirm the transfer.”

Clara faced him.

“Tell them what happens at two.”

Julian smiled faintly.

“You already know.”

“Say it.”

“At two, the succession window opens. The trustees transfer control to me. Your legal status is suspended. And you leave the building under medical supervision.”

“Where was I being taken?”

“You were going somewhere quiet until the baby arrived.”

Chloe began crying.

Clara kept her voice steady.

“And after the birth?”

Julian leaned closer.

May you like

“You would no longer be necessary.”

The ballroom clock struck two.
