THE POOLSIDE SELFIE / Chapter 4 / 15

Chapter 4 - missing child vacation package

Claire called the resort’s main desk.

“My son is missing.”

The receptionist’s tone changed immediately.

“What is his name?”

“Noah Bennett. Six years old. Blue shirt, khaki shorts, blue wristband.”

“Please stay on the line.”

“I’m coming to the lobby.”

Claire ran past the boutiques and restaurants lining the main corridor.

She called Vanessa again.

No answer.

Margaret answered on the first ring.

“What is it?”

“Noah is missing.”

A pause followed.

Not shock.

Not fear.

A pause.

“Where is Vanessa?”

“At the pool without him.”

“I’m sure this is a misunderstanding.”

“Find him.”

“Lower your voice.”

“My child is missing.”

“He is inside a secured resort.”

“You don’t know that.”

Margaret sighed.

“This is precisely why we asked you to sign the agreement.”

Claire nearly dropped the phone.

“What did you say?”

“Emergencies happen. Families need authority to act without chaos.”

“You knew.”

“I know that you become irrational under pressure.”

“Where is Noah?”

“I suggest you come to our suite. We can discuss the papers calmly.”

Claire stopped beside the lobby entrance.

“Tell me where my son is.”

“Sign the temporary authority, and we will make certain this incident is handled privately.”

The words were so deliberate that Claire understood her mother had prepared them in advance.

Claire activated the recording feature on her phone.

“Say that again.”

Margaret went silent.

“You’re recording me.”

“Yes.”

“You have always preferred drama to reason.”

The call ended.

Claire entered the lobby.

Resort employees moved quickly between the front desk and the security office. A manager spoke into a radio. Guests watched from the seating area.

At the far end of the room was the Lost and Found counter.

Beneath it, sitting on the floor, was Noah.

A young concierge knelt beside him.

Claire ran.

“Noah.”

He looked up.

“Mommy.”

She dropped to her knees and pulled him into her arms.

He began crying harder.

“I called you.”

“I know. I’m here.”

“Aunt Vanessa said to wait.”

“Where?”

“By the towels. Then she went away.”

The concierge stood.

“I’m Serena Alvarez. I found him near the service elevators.”

“Was he alone?”

“Yes. He knew your number was on his wristband. We called it several times.”

Claire checked her phone.

There were no calls from the resort.

Serena examined the wristband.

“This isn’t the number I dialed.”

Claire looked down.

The emergency contact number printed beneath her name had been covered with a narrow white label.

A different number had been placed over it.

“Whose number is that?” Claire asked.

Serena showed her the incident form.

The resort had called the replacement number six times.

All six calls had been declined.

Claire dialed it.

A phone rang across the lobby.

Margaret entered from the elevator bank with Henry beside her.

The ringing came from Margaret’s handbag.

Claire slowly stood.

Noah remained behind her, gripping her jacket.

Margaret silenced the phone.

“You found him,” she said. “Good. Now everyone can calm down.”

Claire held up the altered wristband.

“Why is your number covering mine?”

Margaret glanced at it.

“I have no idea.”

“You answered when I told you he was missing.”

“As any grandmother would.”

“You told me to sign custody papers.”

“I told you we should discuss them.”

“You said you would make sure this incident was handled privately.”

Henry looked at his wife.

“You said what?”

Margaret ignored him.

Vanessa arrived through the pool entrance.

Her coral dress moved around her legs as she hurried across the lobby.

“There he is.”

Claire stepped between Vanessa and Noah.

“You don’t go near him.”

Vanessa looked offended.

“I was looking everywhere.”

“You posted a selfie.”

“That was before I realized he was actually gone.”

“You posted it after he was found.”

Vanessa’s eyes shifted toward Margaret.

It lasted less than a second.

Claire saw it.

So did Serena.

The resort manager approached.

“Mrs. Bennett, hotel security would like to speak with everyone privately.”

“No,” Claire said.

She lifted her phone.

“I’m calling the sheriff’s office.”

Margaret’s voice became sharp.

“That is unnecessary.”

“Someone changed my child’s emergency number, left him alone, ignored the resort’s calls, and tried to use the situation to make me sign custody papers.”

“Think about what public accusations will do to this family.”

Claire looked around the lobby.

Guests were already recording.

“I’m thinking about what your family did to my son.”

Henry moved toward Noah.

“Buddy, are you hurt?”

Noah shook his head but did not leave Claire’s side.

“Grandma said Mommy would come when I got scared.”

Henry stared at Margaret.

Margaret’s eyes hardened.

“He misunderstood.”

Claire called the sheriff’s office.

While she gave the dispatcher the resort’s address, Vanessa moved toward her mother and whispered something.

Margaret whispered back.

Serena could not hear the words.

But she saw Margaret hand Vanessa a phone.

And she saw Vanessa slip it beneath the folded towels beside the Lost and Found counter.
