Chapter 15 - The Name Inside the Envelope

Daniel survived the gunshot.
The bullet entered below his shoulder and missed his heart. He was taken into surgery under police guard, then transferred to a secure medical unit.
Authorities called the shooting an attempted assassination.
Victor Mercer was missing.
For the next eleven days, the Halcyon scandal dominated the news.
Mercer Biotech’s stock collapsed. Hospitals suspended its clinical programs. Federal agents raided offices in four states and seized records connected to hundreds of patients.
Several doctors were arrested.
Dr. Reeves disappeared before investigators reached his home.
Dr. Patel was found alive in an isolated rehabilitation center under a false name. She had been drugged and held against her will after refusing to alter Ethan’s tests.
Anna Vale was not found.
But her notebook contained evidence that she had survived the clinic’s closure for at least two years. Margaret refused to believe her daughter was dead.
Ethan received treatment from an independent medical team.
Noah volunteered for a limited stem cell donation after doctors explained every risk. He insisted on making the decision himself.
Adrian refused testing.
No one pressured him.
The treatment stabilized Ethan’s heart, but his recovery remained uncertain.
Sarah spent every day beside him.
At night, she slept in a chair near his bed, just as she had done for nearly a year.
Noah visited often.
Adrian did not.
He remained in protective custody at an undisclosed location. Through an attorney, he informed Sarah that he was not ready to speak with her.
She respected his decision, even though it broke her heart.
Daniel asked to see Sarah three times.
She refused twice.
On the third request, he sent a message.
I know who authorized the shooting. Victor Mercer is not the person at the top.
Sarah agreed to meet him.
Daniel sat behind reinforced glass in the hospital detention wing. His arm was in a sling. His face had lost the polished confidence that once persuaded boardrooms, reporters, and neighbors to believe him.
Sarah picked up the telephone.
Daniel did the same.
“You have five minutes,” she said.
“I deserve more than that.”
“No. You don’t.”
He looked down.
“How is Ethan?”
“Alive.”
“And Noah?”
“Recovering.”
“Adrian?”
“You have no right to ask.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I thought I was protecting everyone.”
“You protected yourself.”
“At first, yes.”
“At every point.”
“You don’t know what Mercer threatened to do.”
“You could have gone to the police.”
“He owned police officers.”
“You could have told me.”
“He had footage from the clinic. Documents with my signature. Evidence of Rebecca.”
“So you let him control our lives for fourteen years.”
Daniel looked at her through the glass.
“I tried to get Adrian out.”
Sarah froze.
“When?”
“Seven years ago. I arranged a transfer during one of the facility closures.”
“Did it succeed?”
“No.”
“What happened?”
“Mercer found out. Three staff members disappeared.”
“Was Anna Vale one of them?”
Daniel’s expression shifted.
“You need to ask Margaret what Anna was really doing at Halcyon.”
“Margaret’s daughter tried to expose you.”
“Anna was not only a nurse.”
“What was she?”
Daniel leaned closer to the glass.
“She helped design the program.”
Sarah gripped the telephone.
“That is a lie.”
“Look in the red notebook. The final pages were removed before Margaret found it.”
“By whom?”
“Anna.”
Daniel glanced toward the guard.
“My five minutes are almost over.”
“Who ordered the shooting?”
“I don’t know his name.”
“Then why did you bring me here?”
“I know the symbol he uses.”
“The Halcyon symbol?”
“No. Halcyon’s symbol was copied from his organization.”
Daniel reached inside his sling.
The guard moved toward him.
Daniel slowly removed a small sealed envelope.
Cream-colored paper.
The emblem of Halcyon Private Trust was stamped on the front.
He placed it against the glass.
“This was delivered to my room after the shooting.”
“How?”
“No one knows.”
“What is inside?”
“A photograph and a list of names.”
“Whose names?”
“Children from the original program.”
Sarah’s throat tightened.
“Adrian?”
“Yes.”
“Noah and Ethan?”
“Yes.”
Daniel’s face turned pale.
“And one more Carter child.”
Sarah stopped breathing.
“That’s impossible.”
“I thought so too.”
The guard opened the door behind Daniel.
“Time.”
Daniel pressed the envelope harder against the glass.
“The photograph was taken six days ago.”
Sarah stared at him.
“Give it to me.”
“They won’t allow it.”
“Then tell me what it shows.”
Daniel’s voice dropped to a whisper.
“It shows Victor Mercer standing beside Anna Vale.”
Margaret’s missing daughter.
Alive.
“And between them,” Daniel continued, “there is a teenage girl wearing the other half of your silver heart.”
The guard pulled Daniel away from the glass.
Sarah stood so quickly that the chair fell behind her.
“What girl?”
Daniel struggled against the guard.
“Her name is Grace.”
“Who is she?”
Daniel looked back as the door began closing.
“I don’t know.”
The door narrowed the space between them.
“But the message inside the envelope says she is your daughter.”
The door slammed shut.
Sarah remained alone in the visitation room.
Her heart pounded against her ribs.
A telephone rang on the wall behind her.
It was not the visitation phone.
It was a private emergency line that had not rung during the entire meeting.
Sarah approached it slowly.
She lifted the receiver.
At first, she heard only static.
Then a girl began humming.
The same lullaby Sarah had sung while pregnant.
Sarah gripped the phone.
“Grace?”
The humming stopped.
A young voice whispered, “Mom?”
Sarah’s eyes filled with tears.
“Where are you?”
A man spoke in the background.
The girl gasped.
The line crackled.
Then she said quickly, “Don’t trust Adrian.”
The call ended.
Sarah stood motionless.
Across the hospital courtyard, Adrian watched her through the rain.
In one hand, he held a phone.
May you like
In the other, he held the missing pages from Anna Vale’s notebook.
When he realized Sarah had seen him, he turned and disappeared into the crowd.
