Chapter 12 - The Exit Reserve
The discovery of the exit reserve changed Ryan's posture overnight.
His attorney requested an emergency settlement conference.
Evelyn agreed.
This time, Claire attended.
So did Margaret and Daniel.
Ryan entered with his attorney.
Diane arrived separately.
Mother and son did not sit together.
Claire noticed.
The fracture had begun.
Evelyn placed a binder on the conference table.
"We know about the two hundred thousand."
Ryan's attorney whispered to him.
Ryan remained calm.
"It is operating capital."
"For what?"
"Business contingencies."
"Which business?"
Ryan did not answer.
Samuel had already traced half the money.
A hundred thousand went into an account Ryan had opened personally.
The remaining hundred thousand had been wired to a law firm specializing in international asset structuring.
Claire stared at the man she had married.
"Were you planning to leave?"
Ryan looked at her.
"No."
"Then why create an exit reserve?"
"It wasn't my description."
"It came from your account."
Ryan's attorney interrupted.
"We are here to discuss resolution."
Margaret spoke.
"Good."
Everyone turned.
She had brought a single sheet of paper.
She placed it in front of Ryan.
"My terms."
Ryan read.
Full restitution of traceable funds.
Transfer of Ryan's Carter Riverfront interest into a recovery trust.
Cancellation of Blue Meridian's option.
Written acknowledgment that Margaret possessed full decision-making capacity.
Retraction of the guardianship accusations.
Full accounting of Diane Carter Interiors payments.
Cooperation in correcting the Harbridge property lien.
Payment of Margaret's forensic and legal expenses from Ryan's assets.
And a sworn declaration identifying every person involved.
Ryan looked up.
"You want me to confess."
"I want you to tell the truth."
"You'll destroy me."
Margaret looked at him.
"You used my grief as a business opportunity."
Ryan pushed the page away.
"No."
Diane picked it up.
She read slowly.
Then asked, "What happens if we refuse?"
Evelyn answered.
"The civil claims proceed."
Diane looked at Ryan.
"How much did you lose in Riverfront?"
He ignored her.
"Ryan."
"This isn't the time."
"You told me the project would recover."
"It still can."
Samuel slid a valuation report across the table.
"No. It can't."
Carter Riverfront had lost its anchor tenant.
Construction financing was suspended.
The land retained value, but the project itself was effectively insolvent.
Diane stared at Ryan.
"You knew."
He said nothing.
"You used her money after you knew."
Ryan slammed his palm against the table.
"I was trying to save everything."
Claire flinched.
Finally.
The first honest sentence.
Ryan looked around the room.
"You think I wanted any of this?"
Daniel laughed.
"You forged my signature."
"I was fixing a temporary problem."
"You framed me before the problem happened."
"I needed a backup."
Claire stared at him.
"A backup?"
He realized what he had admitted.
Too late.
Margaret remained still.
Ryan looked toward her.
"Robert left chaos."
"My husband left records."
"He left a company that treated me like an outsider."
"You were an outsider."
Claire looked at her mother.
Margaret continued.
"You married my daughter. That made you family. It did not make you owner."
Ryan's face twisted.
"I spent eleven years watching Daniel inherit influence because he was born a Morgan."
Daniel said, "I worked there since I was twenty-two."
"And I was never good enough."
Claire whispered, "So you stole from my mother?"
"I borrowed."
"You hid it."
"I was going to put it back."
"You tried to declare her incompetent."
Ryan's eyes moved toward Diane.
"That wasn't my idea."
Diane stood.
"You coward."
Ryan looked at her.
"Mom."
"You told me Margaret was deteriorating."
"She was grieving."
"You told me Charles had never been repaid."
Ryan said nothing.
The room froze.
Diane's face changed.
Margaret watched.
"Tell her."
Ryan looked down.
Diane stepped closer.
"Tell me."
"Most of it was repaid."
Diane struck him.
The sound echoed across the conference room.
Ryan stood.
His attorney grabbed his arm.
Diane was shaking.
"You knew?"
"Mom."
"You knew for years?"
"I knew there were repayments."
"You let me believe Robert stole everything from Charles."
"I needed you committed to the plan."
Diane stumbled backward as if struck again.
Claire felt no sympathy for her.
But she understood the moment.
Diane had built her cruelty on resentment.
Ryan had fed it because resentment was useful.
Margaret picked up her settlement terms.
"Now you both know what it feels like to discover someone used your weakness against you."
No one answered.
The conference ended without agreement.
But two days later, Diane contacted Evelyn alone.
She wanted a separate settlement.
Ryan's attorney objected.
Diane ignored him.
She provided emails.
Bank instructions.
Messages.
One message from Ryan was devastating.
Keep pushing the memory issue. Claire will defend Margaret emotionally. That helps us show the whole Morgan side is irrational.
Claire read it once.
Then again.
Ryan had planned her reactions too.
Her anger.
Her loyalty.
Her love for her mother.
Everything had been converted into strategy.
At the bottom of the evidence packet was one final message from Ryan to Diane.
Once the trust is secured, Claire won't matter.
Claire removed her wedding ring.
