Chapter 4 - The Sister Who Never Existed

The records said Marianne Cole gave birth to two daughters.

Claire Cole.

Vanessa Cole.

Claire was born sixteen years before Vanessa.

That single detail destroyed Grant's first theory.

Claire could not be Vanessa's secret twin.

She could not be Elizabeth's child.

And yet the woman photographed beside Thomas Hale looked almost exactly the age Claire should have been.

Grant and Charles spent the night reconstructing a family history someone had deliberately erased.

Marianne Cole had worked for the Whitmore Foundation as Elizabeth's personal assistant.

She witnessed Elizabeth's marriage.

She managed charitable accounts.

Then, three weeks after Elizabeth disappeared, Marianne resigned.

Her older daughter Claire vanished from school records the same year.

No transfer documentation.

No graduation record.

No death certificate.

Nothing.

Vanessa, then sixteen, continued attending a private school in Connecticut.

Claire simply ceased to exist.

"What if Claire witnessed something?" Grant asked.

Charles rubbed his forehead.

"Possible."

"And Marianne hid her?"

"Possible."

"Then how does Thomas know her?"

Charles did not answer.

Grant called Thomas repeatedly.

No response.

At six in the morning, a message arrived.

Do not contact me again from your phone. Meet me at 11. Pier 17. Come alone.

Grant arrived ten minutes early.

Thomas Hale was waiting near the end of the pier.

He was sixty two, thin, gray haired, and looked older than his photographs.

Grant recognized him from company records.

"You called me."

Thomas looked around.

"Where's your father?"

"Not here."

"Good."

"Tell me about Vanessa."

Thomas studied him.

"You love her?"

Grant thought of Lily's red cheek.

"I thought I did."

"That's not what I asked."

Grant did not answer.

Thomas nodded sadly.

"Elizabeth once told me that love is dangerous when it makes you ignore evidence."

"Where is Elizabeth?"

Thomas looked toward the water.

"I don't know."

"You told my father Claire was Elizabeth."

"I said Claire carried Elizabeth's identity."

Grant stared.

"What does that mean?"

Thomas removed an envelope from his coat.

Inside was a copy of a passport.

Name: Elizabeth Whitmore Hale.

Photograph: Claire Cole.

Grant looked up.

"Why is Claire using my aunt's identity?"

"Because someone forced her to."

"Who?"

"Marianne."

"Why?"

Thomas shook his head.

"It's more complicated."

"Everything is apparently more complicated."

Thomas looked exhausted.

"Eighteen years ago, Elizabeth discovered your grandfather was stealing foundation money. Marianne helped her. So did I."

"Then Elizabeth disappeared."

"Yes."

"Did my grandfather kill her?"

"I don't know."

"You keep saying that."

"Because it's true."

Thomas gripped the railing.

"The night Elizabeth vanished, she called me at 11:43. She was terrified. She said someone had discovered where she kept the account ledgers."

"Who?"

"She didn't say. She told me to take the baby file and run."

"The baby file?"

"Medical records. Trust documents. Letters."

"Was she pregnant?"

"Yes."

Grant remembered the trust.

"With a girl?"

Thomas nodded.

"What happened to the child?"

"I don't know."

Grant stared.

"You were her husband."

"And I failed her."

Thomas's voice broke.

"By the time I reached our apartment, Elizabeth was gone. The place had been searched. The trust file was missing. Marianne appeared two hours later with blood on her coat."

Grant felt his stomach turn.

"Whose blood?"

"She claimed Elizabeth's."

"What did she say?"

"That Elizabeth had been attacked. That we had to disappear because the people responsible would come for everyone connected to her."

"So you ran."

"Yes."

"And Marianne?"

"She disappeared too."

"With Claire?"

Thomas looked at him.

"Claire was there that night."

Grant felt the answer forming.

"She saw something."

Thomas nodded.

"What?"

"She never told me."

"Why?"

"Because Marianne drugged her."

Grant stepped closer.

"What?"

"Claire was sixteen. Marianne kept giving her sedatives and telling everyone she was unstable."

Grant thought of the passport.

"Why make Claire use Elizabeth's identity?"

Thomas removed another page.

A Swiss bank authorization.

Elizabeth Whitmore Hale.

Signature.

Grant compared the dates.

"This was created after Elizabeth disappeared."

"Nine months after."

"Someone used Claire to access Elizabeth's assets."

"Exactly."

"Marianne?"

"At first."

"At first?"

Thomas looked at Grant.

"Then Vanessa took over."

Grant felt a chill.

"Vanessa was sixteen."

"Vanessa learned from her mother."

Thomas handed him another document.

A recent transfer.

Two million dollars moved from an account under Elizabeth's identity into a corporation.

VC Heritage LLC.

Grant stared at the initials.

Vanessa Cole.

"She has been using Claire."

"For years."

"Where is Claire now?"

"I lost contact four months ago."

"Why?"

"Vanessa found out we were speaking."

Grant's phone vibrated.

A message from Rachel.

Vanessa came home early. She's asking where you are.

Grant replied.

Take Lily to my sister's apartment. Now.

Thomas saw his expression.

"You have a child."

"Yes."

"Keep her away from Vanessa."

"I intend to."

Thomas shook his head.

"You don't understand."

"Then make me understand."

Thomas leaned closer.

"Vanessa isn't afraid of losing you."

Grant waited.

"She's afraid of losing access to the Whitmore family."

"Why?"

"Because Elizabeth's original trust says that if her daughter is ever found, control of a hidden Whitmore account transfers to that child."

"How much?"

Thomas answered quietly.

"At today's value, more than eighty million dollars."

Grant stared at him.

"And Vanessa thinks the pendant leads to the daughter."

Thomas nodded.

"That is why she wants it."

Grant immediately called Rachel.

No answer.

He called again.

No answer.

Then Vanessa texted him.

Looking for something?

A photograph appeared beneath the message.

May you like

Lily's flower basket sat empty on the nursery floor.

The pendant was gone.
