Chapter 5 - Ashley’s Plan

The investigator returned with photographs within forty-eight hours.

Emily leaving the elementary school.

Emily shopping at a local market.

Emily walking along the dirt road with two boys.

The clearest picture showed Noah and James standing beside her at a school picnic.

Ashley enlarged the image.

The resemblance to Michael was undeniable.

She felt no surprise.

Only urgency.

The merger was scheduled to be finalized in three weeks. Once complete, Ashley would gain control of a new executive investment fund worth millions.

If Michael recognized the twins as his children, the Carter trust attorneys would be required to review the merger for conflicts affecting the new beneficiaries.

The process could delay or stop the deal.

Worse, Michael would investigate Ashley’s actions.

The blocked calls.

The destroyed letter.

The altered photographs.

The money she had quietly redirected through consulting companies controlled by people loyal to her.

Ashley constructed her plan quickly.

First, she hired a family-law attorney named Preston Vale, a man known for accepting unusual cases as long as the payment arrived in advance.

She told Preston that Emily was threatening to reveal the children publicly unless Michael surrendered part of his company.

Preston prepared an emergency guardianship petition.

To support the petition, Ashley needed evidence that Emily was incapable of caring for the twins.

Her investigator photographed the damaged roof and broken porch railing. He ignored the repaired bedrooms, full refrigerator and clean school records.

A private physician signed a statement claiming the children appeared underweight, though he had never examined them.

A laboratory employee produced a DNA report using genetic material taken from a water bottle Michael had discarded after a meeting.

The test confirmed what everyone already suspected.

Michael was the twins’ father.

Ashley forged Michael’s signature on the petition.

She then created a temporary trust structure naming herself as manager of the twins’ financial interests.

Once she married Michael, she intended to argue that she could provide the children with a more stable home than Emily.

Whether the twins actually lived with her was irrelevant.

She only needed legal standing long enough to complete the merger and secure control of the Carter assets.

Ashley scheduled a business trip that would take Michael near the Georgia county where Emily lived.

She planned to have Preston and the investigator serve Emily with the petition while Michael remained inside the SUV.

If he saw Emily, Ashley would claim the encounter had been planned by Emily to manipulate him.

If he saw the children, she would present the guardianship case as a necessary response to Emily’s supposed negligence.

Everything depended on Michael trusting Ashley more than his own eyes.

The black SUV left Atlanta shortly after sunrise.

Michael sat in the front passenger seat, reviewing merger documents.

Ashley occupied the seat behind him. Preston and the investigator followed in another vehicle.

Two hours into the journey, construction forced the driver onto a rural detour.

Michael looked out the window.

The familiar fields and narrow roads pulled memories from places he had tried to seal away.

“Where are we?” he asked.

The driver checked the navigation screen.

“About twelve miles outside Millbrook.”

Michael lowered the documents.

“Emily’s town.”

Ashley leaned forward.

“We should remain on schedule.”

Michael watched an old gas station pass.

Then the county elementary school.

Then the road leading toward the Harper property.

“Turn here,” he told the driver.

Ashley’s voice sharpened.

“Michael, we have a meeting.”

“It can wait ten minutes.”

“There is nothing here for you.”

He looked back at her.

The certainty in her words made his suspicion grow.

“Turn,” he repeated.

The driver obeyed.

Ashley secretly sent a message to Preston.

Come immediately. Bring the petition.

The SUV reached the old Harper house at the exact moment Emily stepped onto the dirt road carrying James while holding Noah’s hand.

The driver braked.

Michael saw the children.

And every lie Ashley had built began to collapse.
