Chapter 9 - Margaret’s Confession

The police traced the email through six countries and found nothing.

Victor Lang’s estate was searched under an emergency warrant.

It was empty.

No Margaret.

No twin.

No Noah-related equipment.

The place had been professionally cleared within hours.

Victor’s attorney claimed his client was traveling abroad and knew nothing about the allegations.

Hale Biotechnologies released a statement calling the investigation an attempt to steal proprietary research.

By morning, Ethan had been suspended.

News reporters gathered outside the hospital.

Someone leaked the custody documents portraying Emily as unstable.

Headlines appeared online.

MOTHER ACCUSED OF ABDUCTION PLOT.

HALE EXECUTIVE’S WIFE LINKED TO FAMILY DISPUTE.

Questions were shouted whenever Emily crossed a public hallway.

Had she attacked Margaret?

Was she attempting to flee with Noah?

Did she fabricate the surveillance claims?

Victor was fighting through public opinion before the police could fight through evidence.

Detective Bennett moved the family to a protected apartment.

Noah was discharged under an assumed name.

For two days, nothing happened.

Then Margaret called Ethan.

Her voice was weak.

“I have five minutes.”

“Where are you?”

“I don’t know.”

“Are you hurt?”

“Yes.”

“Who has you?”

A long pause.

“Your brother.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

“What is his name?”

“Adrian.”

Emily and Bennett listened through the speaker.

“Why didn’t you tell me about him?”

“I thought he was dead.”

“Did you see him die?”

“No.”

“Then you abandoned him.”

Margaret began to cry.

“I could only take one baby.”

“Why?”

“Robert arrived early. Victor said I had thirty seconds to choose.”

Ethan’s face twisted.

“So you looked at two newborns and selected one?”

“They had identification bands.”

“Which was I?”

“Baby A.”

“Was Adrian Baby B?”

“Yes.”

“Why did you choose me?”

Margaret said nothing.

“Why?” Ethan shouted.

“Because your heart was stronger.”

Emily felt sick.

Margaret had chosen the baby she considered healthier.

The other infant had been left with Victor.

“What happened to Adrian?” Ethan asked.

“Victor said the weaker child would not survive.”

“But he did.”

“Yes.”

“And you never searched for him.”

“I was afraid Victor would take you too.”

“That wasn’t fear. That was selfishness.”

Margaret’s breathing became ragged.

“You’re right.”

The admission silenced everyone.

Margaret had never admitted fault without attaching blame.

“I loved you,” she whispered.

“You drugged me.”

“To make you forget the laboratory.”

“You drugged Noah.”

“To make him forget Adrian.”

“You built a custody case against Emily.”

“To get Noah away before Victor took him.”

Emily stepped toward the phone.

“You could have warned us.”

Margaret’s voice hardened.

“You would never have believed me.”

“You never gave us the truth to believe.”

“I knew you were investigating. I knew Victor was watching. Every time you found something, he moved closer.”

“So you framed me as mentally unstable?”

“I needed legal control of Noah. With custody, I could remove him from the country.”

“You slapped me.”

“I panicked.”

Emily laughed bitterly.

“You always call cruelty panic after you’re caught.”

Margaret was silent.

Then she said, “There is something you need to know about Adrian.”

Ethan gripped the phone.

“What?”

“He believes Noah is his son.”

“That’s impossible.”

“He believes you stole his identity and his family.”

“Why?”

“Because Victor raised him with your life.”

Nobody understood.

Margaret explained.

Victor had shown Adrian photographs of Ethan’s childhood.

Ethan’s home.

Ethan’s school.

Ethan’s birthdays.

He told Adrian that those things had originally belonged to him.

Whenever Ethan achieved something, Victor framed it as theft.

When Ethan married Emily, Victor showed Adrian the wedding video.

When Noah was born, Victor told Adrian that Ethan had produced the child Adrian was meant to have.

“He trained Adrian to hate you,” Margaret said.

“Why?”

“To keep him obedient.”

“Why contact us now?”

“Victor promised Adrian he could replace you.”

Emily looked at Ethan.

A man with the same face.

The same DNA.

A lifetime of engineered resentment.

Margaret’s voice dropped.

“Adrian has already been inside your house.”

“When?”

“For months.”

Emily’s skin prickled.

“The cameras?”

“Some were mine. Some were his.”

“What did he want?”

“To study you.”

A door opened in the background.

Margaret inhaled sharply.

“My time is over.”

“Wait,” Ethan said. “Tell us where you are.”

“I can’t.”

“Mom.”

The word escaped before he could stop it.

Margaret began sobbing.

“Ethan, there is a red house near the old railway bridge. Beneath the kitchen floor, you’ll find Anna’s tape.”

“Why is it there?”

“Because Robert hid it.”

“Why didn’t you destroy it?”

“I tried.”

A male voice spoke in the background.

“Say goodbye.”

Ethan stood.

“Adrian?”

The voice sounded almost exactly like his.

“Hello, brother.”

“Don’t hurt her.”

Adrian laughed softly.

“She told me you were the compassionate one.”

“What do you want?”

“What she took.”

“My life?”

“No.”

Adrian’s voice became colder.

May you like

“The child.”

The call ended.
